With the cost of one year of college at Calvin and Hope now about $30k/year, and DIII schools unable to give athletic scholarships, I am wondering if DIII schools like Calvin and Hope have ways to "get around" the lack of athletic scholarships. For example, are they able to provide athletes with "need-based" scholarships or other financial aid which cover tuition and room and board?

Pat Coleman

A Division III student-athlete is eligible for any other form of scholarship or financial aid that the rest of the student body is, which includes academic scholarships, need-based aid, etc. They just cannot receive financial aid which is based solely on their athletic ability.

Must be getting close to June - seems like we have a discussion about "scholarships" every year around this time

I don't know about Hope, but I know that Calvin, although an increase in tuition has happen the past few years, they have also increased financial aid help as a whole also.

Attendance figures are out for the 08-09 season.  Hope and Calvin top the list, and the MIAA also lead the nation in average attendance.

Compared to D1, Hope would have been 175th and Calvin 178th out of 330.  Compared to DII, Hope would have been 7th in the nation and Calvin 9th.

Calvin numbers don't match miaa.com........they must have had to count their season opening tournament at Grand Rapids Christian High School in those numbers.  They only played 10 games at the 'Noord........I have no idea where the mystery 13th game comes from.

http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/0809/calvinm.htm

Without Hope and Calvin, MIAA attendance was 357 per game.  Makes me think someone's numbers were incomplete.

edit.....mystery solved, through math and deduction......Calvin is being credited with an 11-28 game vs Aquinas as a home game, that game was played at Hope.   The next game on the schedule is also credited as an away game at Cornerstone.....also played at Hope.

Without the additional game, Calvin's average attendance should be 2,586.....still not enough.  Sorry Charlie. ;)

Here is the schedule:  http://www.hope.edu/athletics/mbb/

It doesn't include the opposition in the various tournaments.

Pre-season game is at Oakland U

pointlem

Interesting disagreement between the Hope and Calvin schedules.

Hope says
Friday-Saturday, Dec. 4-5, MIAA/CCIW Tournament at Calvin

Calvin says
MIAA/CCIW Challenge with Carthage, Hope and Wheaton (at Hope)
Calvin vs Carthage at 6:00 p.m.
Hope vs Wheaton at 8:00 p.m.

I'm inclined to believe Calvin, which has precise times.

HopeConvert

Calvin had it two seasons ago and it would be Hope's turn in the rotation. Wheaton's website indicates they are planning on playing at Hope. I think it's a mistake on Hope's website and the Challenge will be played in Holland.

Tuesday Nov 17th at Oakland University
The way I understand it,  this game counts for Oakland, doesn't count for Hope.

The tournament opponents have no one special and are at last word....tentative.

FWIW:  Hope is showing the HOF games at AQ, while Calvin has the games listed as "at Calvin",

Unless they switched the order of who hosts, it should be at AQ this fall.
