I know Kelvin Grady's name was thrown around on here in a non-D3 sort of way......just to update, in a weird twist it now appears Kelvin will be trying out for the Michigan football team as a walk-on.   It would seem his basketball career is over.

I'm wondering if this is an experimental trial rather than sitting out a year for a transfer.  Is anyone versed well enough in the NCAA transfer rules to know whether he could play basketball in two years at another DI institution since he won't be on scholarship for next year?

Why, Jimmy, why?!

Verlander (MLB pitcher of the month for May) had a 4-hit shutout after 8 innings (matched by shutout pitching by Ervin Santana for the Angels).  Leyland sent in Rodney for the 9th, who promptly gave up two runs.  Tigers got one back in the bottom of the ninth (which would have been the win if Justin continued his mastery), but Rodney takes the loss ('assist' to Leyland).

In fairness, Justin had thrown 119 pitches, and Rodney had been excellent so far this season, but I can't see taking out a pitcher three outs short of a complete game shutout.

No single event or decision decides the outcome of the game.  Leyland is always criticized and second guessed after a loss whether he makes the decision to keep the P in the game or turn to the bullpen.  Sometimes the right decision yields the wrong result, that is what I believe happened in this case.

There is plenty of blame to go around.  Why criticize a pitching decision in a tight game and not mention Jeff Larish's inability to score the runner on third with one out in the fifth?  It is unfortunate the offense put them in the position to have a late inning decision questioned after 8 shutout innings from their ace.

Mr. Ypsi

True, ziggy.

And fear not - the magical summer of 2006 still gives Leyland 'brownie points' in my book that are far from used up yet.  I'm certainly not calling for his scalp; I was just frustrated at a decision I disagreed with.  If Verlander is the ACE (and he certainly seems to be), let him get a complete game shutout! ;)

Add the skipper to the list of d3board readers.  Jackson pitches the ninth in a save situation.  Edwin had thrown just 96 pitches through eight.

Some rule changes from the NCAA for men's basketball:
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=ap-ruleschanges&prov=ap&type=lgns

The article does not say anything about its application across the divisions (surprise, surprise) but I assume there will be consistency.

Does anyone know how this affects a game between NCAA and NAIA institutions?  Home court rules or would the NAIA addopt rule changes from the NCAA committee?

Pat Coleman

The NAIA generally adopts rules changes from the NCAA.

Playing rules are consistent across all divisions, though some equipment requirements are different, such as tenths of a second on shot clocks and the lit backboard thing.

A pitchers' duel in Chi-town tonite - Verlander has a one-hit shutout after 4; Danks is matching him with a two-hit shutout after 5.

And, Jimmy, no pulling Justin if he still has a shutout after 8 - OK? ::)

Mr. Ypsi,

Jim Leyland must be reading the message board ... Verlander went the distance!!
