Alan  Babbit in this morning's Holland Sentinel writes:

"The Flying Dutchmen are tied with Calvin atop the standings.  Hope, however, owns the tiebreaker for the top seed in the MIAA tournament because it is currently ranked higher in the region."

Does anyone know if that is correct?

northb

My understanding is that they are equal on all tie-breakers, so it would be a coin flip at this point, or if both teams win out.

If I remember correctly from past years (the search function doesn't seem to be much help), the tiebreakers are (in order):

1 -- Head to head record
2 -- record vs. 3rd place team
3 -- record vs. 4th place team
.
.
.
7 -- record vs. 8th place team
8 -- coin flip

Currently Calvin and Hope are 1-1 against each other in league play and they are each 1-1 against Olivet. They remain undefeated against all other teams, so as northb pointed out it comes down to a coin flip.

Can anyone confirm that my memory is correct?

I seem to remember that after the last time it was decide by a coin flip, the league (coaches or ADs) implemented a next tie breaker - either regional record or regional rankings.  I also heard this being discussed on Saturday at DeVos, by people who I would assume would know.  Perhaps OC_SID could help us out here and confim this.

I will mention that I have heard directly from players on Hope's team since Hope has the better regional ranking that we own the tiebreaker.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

That's great, but have you checked with the ball boys and the man with the orange pants?

Thanks for sharing this valuable information.  As we all like to rely on stats here, it is now clear that MVP should be awarded to Scott Rogers from Trine.  However, if Mantel ties Rogers by the end of the season, then the nod would go to John because of his higher regional ranking.

No, it only means that Scott Rogers is the best dunker in the MIAA because he has the most dunks. It was previously determined that the best player in any category can simply be determined from the leaderboards independent of any other possible reasoning.

Hope 98 Albion 90

Hope's starting 5 accounted for all but 9 of their points.  Big game for Andy Venema and Peter Bunn had only 5 FG attempts.

Hope:  Venema 25, Nelis 19, Bowser 15, Bunn 15, Krombeen 13
Albion:  Cruse 21, Kazen 16, Stasiak 13, Bridges 10

Those stats seem to indicate that Hope is gelling at the right time.  Mr. V. seems to have gotten his game together, and imho that spot was about the only weak link in Hope's chain when conference play began.   :)

Albion leads Hope 50-45 at the break. Wow, it's not often you see Hope's defense give up 50 in a half. The Flying Dutchmen are shooting 17-28 but Albion appears to be controlling the boards and shooting well from the arc (5-11). Venema with 16.

Too bad the game's not at a technologically advanced school.  ;)  It'd be nice to watch a video feed.

I missed Bryan Powell's "Dunk" today due to some serious lagging. I heard the crowd roar and that announcer say 'flush.' However the next trip down at a stoppage I heard a fan yell out, "Its okay Bryan, we'll count it as a dunk." LOL  :P
Clearly it was the best flush in the history of D3 Hoops.    :-*
My 12 yr old took some of the credit, as he yelled out "Dunk it, Bryan!" during the breakaway.  On a related note, I realized I may have already poisoned his mind a bit when the first thing he said upon entering the arena was "Oh no, dad, we got Geerlings and two bald guys today. . ."

The real question is whether Rogers leads the MIAA in dunks/minute, which you have to lead the conference in to be considered the best.

I'd say we're in for an interesting 2 1/2 weeks.  This is probably the most excitement the league has seen top-to-bottom in quite some time with nearly anyone capable of winning/losing a first round game.  I don't know if any upsets will happen, but I will have more hesitations picking the higher seed in all of the first round games than years past.

I'm not sure I can go that far. I'd feel quite confident picking the #1 and 2 seeds to win in the first round rather easily.  I think the 3 v. 6 and 4 v. 5 game should be close contests though.

Here's a shocker - Michael McClary is the POW (player of the week) again.  That makes 6 times this season.  From what I can find, he is the first MIAA player to ever be POW 6 times in one season.  Both Brandon Crawford (2005-2006) and Jesse Reimink (2008-2009) achieved the honor 5 times in a single season.  6 weeks out of 14, with two weeks left.  Could he reach 50%?  YIKES!

Based on the POW, he is a sure bet for MVP as well (I know - duh!).  Every player who achieved 4 or more POW awards in a single season has also been the MVP.  For reference, they are:

Jeremy Veenstra 2001-2002 - 4 POW
Don Overbeek 2002-2003 - 4 POW
Brandon Crawford 2005-2006 - 5 POW
Jesse Reimink 2008-2009 - 5 POW

Maybe McClary will bring the MVP honor to his subpar team, but I suspect many of the people listed beleow do not think it is a slam dunk.
