Mr. Ypsi

A key difference between IWU and Hope is that both Jack Horenberger and Dennie Bridges remained as AD after retiring as bball coach.  Thus Jack NAMED Dennie as coach; Dennie named Scott Trost as coach.  The latter MAY have been a mistake (though he won the CCIW 3 of 4 years) - he left the cupboard pretty bare after 4 years for new coach (also named by Dennie Bridges) Ron Rose.

Hiring a young coach is a double-edged sword.  Ideally, they are a 'college lifer' (IWU has been blessed with quite a number of such talented coaches in several sports), but they may also be ambitious in a more 'career-path' way (as Trost was) and use Hope as a stepping stone towards d1 riches.  (We're holding our breath on both Ron Rose and Mia Smith (women's bball coach) who are bound to get lots of offers and hopefully will stay Titans.)  I wish you luck in finding a coach who will be great for decades AT Hope. :)

I can count without using any fingers the number of coaches I can recall in any sport who have left Hope to go somewhere else.

I would suggest that speculation may be fun, but is pointless and potentially harmful.

Hiring Scott Trost was not a mistake.  He was an outstanding coach for 5 years.  I don't blame any coach who has aspirations of moving up and on.

But certainly after losing Trost after just 5 seasons, IWU definitely looked for someone who would be around a long time...and I think it is safe to say that hiring someone from the "IWU family" became more important in the 2006 hiring process than it was in 2001.

I'm sure Hope would ideally like to find someone who they feel will be around for a long, long time.  And I think we all know Hope would ideally like to find someone from the family.

When one of the top coaching jobs in Division III opens, there is going to be a lot of speculation.  Especially in a forum dedicated to Division III.

Maybe we could wait for the ink to dry a little more then.

Ink is kind of a thing of the past unfortunately. :)

There is nothing wrong with speculation. Glenn isn't dead, he's just retired. What harm can you do by speculating?

What part of my statement was classless, not that I care what you think.  They will be talented and experienced with only 2 players graduating.  They're not going to fall apart or suddenly become inept because of a coaching change, they're playing basketball.  they have not had several recruits "commit" and now have to possibly reconsider because of a coaching change and having a fresh start with new styles, philosphies, and expectations is a good thing.  The players are not going to pout, they are going to move on and continue to mature, grow and hopefully continue to develop as players, and more importantly, as memers of society.

I'm as nostolgic as the next person, and I've watched Hope hoops for well over 20 years, I have nothing but respect for Glenn as a person- a role model, father, grandfather and coach.  I may have differing opinions on things but that doesn't diminish my respect for him.   But to say that Hope is no longer considered a favorite in the conference, I statement I was responding to, seemed a bit silly to me.

Whoever replaces him will have a lot of talent to work with, as Hope will still easily, imo, be favored to win the conference next season by the coaches.

I am sure that Hope is going to whip up something real big to honor the longtime coach, so I agree that it is fine to speculate the next coach on here.

Anyways, congratulations to Glenn on a fine coaching career!

From The Sentinel:

"Holland, MI —

Hope College will begin a nationwide search for a new men's basketball coach immediately, President James E. Bultman said during this evening's press conference announcing Glenn Van Wieren's retirement.

A committee, chaired by kinesiology chairman Mark Northuis, will lead the hiring process, Bultman said.

There was no timetable Tuesday for when the new coach will be hired, Bultman said. Internal and external candidates will be considered, he added.

Van Wieren endorsed longtime assistant and former Hope player Matt Neil to replace him Tuesday."

Harmful?  Come on, no reason to be so dramatic.

How does one change their vote on the Poll?

I doubt many would change their vote. These results are about the same as last year even though some Hope fans would have you believe they were surprised to make the tournament.

The most interesting thing for me to see in this transition is the new coach's style of play. I have always had the opinion that past Hope teams had the ability to "out-athlete" their opposition but never actually did it.

I am wondering why the kineseology chairman is heading up the search committee.
Is Schoonveld too new?
