WOW, almost better than watching frozen live stats  ;)

It's like watching paint dry.

I know all of you are enjoying the talk on who the next Hope coach is, but I thought I would change the subject. Alma has a webcam inside in its new facility. They have been painting the lines this morning, so here is the link, so you can chat about something else.

I was doubtful that there could be anything as riveting as the idle (or is it addled?) speculation on the next head coach in Holland, but you have found it, my friend.

They're taking the tape off!

If it was me, I would have made the "A" cream instead of gray.

Speaking of facility upgrades, Kalamazoo will be required to mount the shotclock on the backboard for the '10-11 season. I believe the shotclock had been mounted on the wall behind the hoop.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel agreed to delay this for Division III schools. The requirement does not go in affect now until the 2011-12 season. And even after that, failure to comply will only result in not being able to host NCAA championships competition.

What are the parameters for eligibility?  Can an individual play basketball in Div III for three years and then after a couple years off, can they come back -say- as a graduate student or to finish up their BA and play for a year? Can they attend college for more than 5 years and be eligible if they have not used their 4 Years of play?

My understanding is that you get 5 years to use up 4 years of eligibility. I don't believe you can stop the clock once it has started ticking.

That's correct: 5 years for division I, 10 semesters for division II and III although I don't see how 10 semesters would be different than 5 years or why this distinction is made.

Maybe someone can refresh my memory.  In Calvin's 2000 Semifinal or National Championship game, they played against a team that had 2 guys that were about 30 years old.  How was their eligibility worked out?  I am not sure if they just started late, but I thought that they had played and then left and returned.

Going to school full-time or part-time also plays a role when calculating semester eligibility.  If you completely stop going to school after going full time and playing 6 semesters and then take a couple of years off, you technically will have 4 semesters to play 2.  If you quit playing after the initial 6 semesters but continue to go full time the student-athlete is burning eligible playing semesters.  At the division III level it is 10 semesters to play 8 at a full time student status.

I hear that "Congratulations" should be extended to Ricky Shilts who has been named as an Assistant Basketball Coach at Calvin College.

Good news for Bryan Powell, any open look across half court is fair game!

Seriously though, congratulations to Ricky, it is quite apparent his playing days are fondly remembered.

Congrats from me as well.  Ricky certainly has the genetics to be a great coach.

Good to hear.  Ricky knows a little something about how to exceed in the post-season that he can hopefully pass onto his players!
