Malone--  This could be the first ever meeting between Hope and Malone.  Malone is coached by former Calvin assistant and Trinity Christian coach Tim Walker.

This is the third time in four years Hope has brought an NAIA team from Ohio for the Russ DeVette Tournament.

Malone is also noteworthy for being a rest stop just prior to Hope Convert's Damascus Road experience.  The precise details of how and when he encountered the light (lite?) remain murky in my memory, but Malone was a notch in the good professor's resume' along the way.

It seems odd to see a Calvin poster use the Damascus Road analogy to describe Hope Convert's change in loyalty from one Rivalry school to the other. One would think that a Calvin poster describing Hope Convert's switch in allegiance would instead use a biblical allusion that contained the phrase "thirty pieces of silver." ;) :D

Or perhaps a reference to Faust. ;)

Yes, but any analogy to Paul's Damascus road experience is obviously so hyperbolic that it must be taken entirely facetiously.

Since I am the reprobate in question, allow me to elucidate. Yes, I spent ten very good years at Malone, which was in no small part a via preparatio for my destination at Hope; for that matter, so was Calvin. Now I know many good knights may not like to think of themselves as a stage along life's way that leads ultimately to the corner of 10th and Columbia, but such are the ways of Providence. And such are the wages of schism.

As to the Faust reference, I doubt my wife would like to think of Hope as a competitor for the claims her charms have made upon me. It does put me in mind of my favorite couplet from Faust which, if I remember correctly, goes:

"Es ist bekannt, was wir bedurfen,
Wir wollen stark getranke schlurfen."

Those who have golfed or otherwise spent an evening with me will understand the significance immediately.

Hyperbolic? I don't think so. But that's another story, and GK and OK already know the details.

Having been tutored in Goethe many years ago--auf Deutsch--by Herr Lamse (who adored the prolific German of many talents) let me weigh in. HC's memory of the text is correct except it begins "Euch ist bekannt." An English translation (in some context) could be rendered:

Command then the poetry!
You know just what we need
We want to sip strong drinks;
Concoct it immediately!

And no, I don't think Goethe was a founding member of the Dew Crew.

Once again my math on this subject is suspect.  We can thank the baseball team, who took 4 of 4 from Albion including a sweep on the final day to lock up 2nd place by 1 game over Trine.

*Hope also won its last 7 games, that didn't hurt either.

Austin Elling 6-6 F, Hudsonville to Hope

Early season preview on Hudsonville, some nice tidbits.

http://highschoolsports.mlive.com/news/article/7019792451807478955/austin-elling-looks-toward-next-level-big-improvement-for-hudsonville/

I saw Elling play twice last season and he's a pretty good pickup for the Dutch. He was the key inside player on a 14-8 Hudsonville High squad. His importance became evident when Elling missed the last 6 games, 4 of which the Eagles lost. Austin probably won't play a major role next year but I can definately see him as a starter at some point in his college career.

I'm happily corrected, especially since OK's substitution of "euch" for "est" makes a lot more sense. I also had Herr Lamse for German, and also Herr Bratt, and they were two of the five best professors I had at Calvin.

Hope Edges Calvin for 2009-10 MIAA Commissioner's Cup

I've never understood the Commissioner's Cup. It seems a bit silly as a measure -- the worst team on your roster has far more impact than the best. You can finish in first place in almost all sports, have one or two bad team, and still not win the Commissioner's Cup.

Why not look to the best teams? First place finishes in the MIAA: Calvin 9, Hope 4.

Or, better still, how about checking out performance on the national level? Last I heard Calvin was #6 nationally in the Learfield director's cup standings after the winter sports, and spring sports promise to add some more points. Women's tennis won an NCAA playoff match, men's track & field should pick up a few points, and women's track and field is rated #1 in the nation.

Oh well, I guess you just have to take your banners where you can get them  ;)

Hey, how about a new chant to go with the banners:

"We've got the best worst team! Go Hope!!"

The OldKnight/HopeConvert repartee on this board is worth the d3Hoops price of admission! :)

So, I wonder, is Austin Elling 6-6, 6-7, or 6-8, as variously reported?  Or maybe he was 6-6 and grew an inch or two?
