The OldKnight/HopeConvert repartee on this board is worth the d3Hoops price of admission! :)

So, I wonder, is Austin Elling 6-6, 6-7, or 6-8, as variously reported?  Or maybe he was 6-6 and grew an inch or two?

I didn't bring a tape measure to the games but I think 6'8" is too generous. But going from memory (and remember the adjective premodifier in my board name) I do believe Elling is a lefthander which I've always thought was an advantage in basketball, especially for post players.

Hope Edges Calvin for 2009-10 MIAA Commissioner's Cup

I've never understood the Commissioner's Cup. It seems a bit silly as a measure -- the worst team on your roster has far more impact than the best. You can finish in first place in almost all sports, have one or two bad team, and still not win the Commissioner's Cup.

Why not look to the best teams? First place finishes in the MIAA: Calvin 9, Hope 4.

Or, better still, how about checking out performance on the national level? Last I heard Calvin was #6 nationally in the Learfield director's cup standings after the winter sports, and spring sports promise to add some more points. Women's tennis won an NCAA playoff match, men's track & field should pick up a few points, and women's track and field is rated #1 in the nation.

Oh well, I guess you just have to take your banners where you can get them  ;)

Hey, how about a new chant to go with the banners:

"We've got the best worst team! Go Hope!!"

It would seem to me that mathematically your worst team has exactly the same impact as your best, it's just more noticable for the programs at the top of the standings.  I think the idea behind the Cup is to reward the depth of an entire program, not just one that has a few dominant sports.  We can argue whether that's the best way to judge a program, but that's how this measure works.  I also think it's gracious of the MIAA to throw out the bottom ranked sport, so that Calvin doesn't get penalized too much for not having football.  I understand that Calvin is still at a disadvantage, since they can't choose which sport they throw out, but it's better than getting an automatic last place finish from football included in the Cup standings.

I'm glad that we can also look to other measures like league championships won, or the Learfield Directors Cup, so that we can also measure athletic programs' success in other ways.  Either way, congrats to Hope on winning the Commissioner's Cup this year.  Both schools can once again be proud of how their teams did in 09-10, and hopefully we can break the Cup free from Hope's stranglehold next year.

Interesting to note, the last time a non Hope/Calvin school won the MIAA Commissioner's Cup or All sports award was over 30 years ago.

See McClary, Michael.

McClary's advantage comes from his superhuman abilities, not his handedness.

:D :D  A little ben wallace except with better scoring ability.  As they say, "Fear the Fro!!", it does make him look more intimidating.

Take heart oh wizard of standup, Calvin had a 2,135 avg, that might be a top 10 finish in the empty seats category. ;)

This is probably not news news, but to fill the current void here's a tidbit for the day:

Awesome!  Have they hung the banner yet?

I always enjoy hearing from you, Wiz.

In all seriousness, it it something to be proud of to have it be the norm to lead the nation in attendance.

And with all the flack that Calvin fans can sometimes get for attendance, they still finished second in the nation.

Rival Calvin finished second with an average of 2,135 fans over 17 home dates.

Hope and Calvin helped the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to top all Division III conferences in home attendance for the 19th consecutive year with an average of 1,066 fans per game.

Did you not read the entire article, Sac?   I do find it funny, though, you said that at the same time I was writing that I was glad Calvin finished second in the nation.

This was posted a couple days ago from a Hope poster on the MIAA forum on mlive:

they hope to announce this month who is going to be the coach-the next week or so.From inside there is support to go outside the program and the fact that it has not been announced yet, may not be good for Matt Neil who really wants the job. I am glad that they are looking nationally, There are some great D-III and D-II coaches who I know applied.

EDIT:  Apparently this isn't true.

Um, yes obviously I did read the whole article.  Guess my crack wasn't clear.

4500-2135 = 2365 empty seats on average.

And if the "empty seat" material isn't old enough material either?

I thought we've been over why Calvin built the arena with 4500 seats.

4500-2135 = 2365 empty seats on average.

Trine, UW-Oshkosh, Buena Vista, Concordia-Morehead, Gustavus Adolphus, Luther, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Simpson, St. Johns, and Millikin all appear to have had more empty seats on average (I'm sure there are others too, didn't want to spend much time looking).

So no, it's not top ten.  :)  But thanks for playing.
