Do you tend to get better talent in your program/company/organization if you employ people that are content to stay in the same seat for years/decades and develop that way (i.e. what happened with Matt Neil), or do get better talent if you develop a reputation for promoting people more quickly even if it means they leave your program to do so?  Put another way, do you value loyalty, stability, and experience more than ambition and perhaps upside potential?

It depends if we're talking about upside potential, tremendous upside potential, or unlimited upside potential.

To quote Bill Simmons, we're talking about Tremendous Upside Potential.  A Total Package with a High Ceiling.  Sky's the limit.

I say go for the more talented person, and take loyalty as a bonus.

Speaking of which, great news out of East Lansing today!

HCG.  Good question.  It doesn't have to be either all one way or all the other.  Much would depend on the needs of the organization at the specific time, the quality of the internal candidates, as well as the quality of external candidates.  There is much to be said for loyalty, and continuity in a program.  However, all companies, colleges, etc. may at some time reach the point they would be better served in the long run by bringing in an outsider to give the program/company a new or different perspective.
One needs to balance both short term, and long term objectives.
The succes or the failure of the hire really depends on the person hired.  If the insider just sticks with traditions when new thinking is needed they may fail.  Not because they are a bad person, but simply because they didn't bring to the job what the situation needed.  The same for an external candidate that comes in, rushes to make changes, and ignores the existing culture.  Again it may be a case of a very good hire just the person pushed too much, too fast or fixed the wrong problems.

One of Calvin's promising recruits, Jalen Bouma of Ann Arbor Huron, has slipped away to Eastern Michigan University, where he accepted a baseball scholarship following an outstanding senior season.  He would have competed to play both basketball and baseball at Calvin, but will stick exclusively to the diamond at EMU.

Heard through the grapevine that Calvin defeated Hope Monday night and was curious if anyone was in attendance.  Hope is really struggling under new leadership (poor joke of course)  Neil's first initiative should be to limit the number of players on the summer roster to "current" varsity players so there aren't 20 guys fighting for PT.  I remember going, and playing in this league and Hope would have 14-18 guys, former and JV included.  Form 2 teams like Calvin does/used to do?  Summer leagues are about playing, not getting 6 minutes a half.  No one plays defense except the last 3 miutes of a close game so fatique shouldn't be an issue.

Any word on recruit Austin Elling? Heard his college choice (from someone coaching in his hs program, not speculation) hinged on who was hired.  Any other recruiting news, changes, etc...

There were only 10 guys, and all got equal PT.  Just an off shooting night, IMHO.

Is nice!

but......

Washington 31-36
Pittsburgh 23-42

with 26-40 Arizona in town for 3.

Call me if it extends into the Mets or Braves series.  :)

Hopefully Willis gives up 6 BBs, 0 Ks, 9 hits, and 5 ER tomorrow.

New to the forum, but i talked to a few Calvin players and they said that Salo and Powell didn't play particularly well for the Knights, and they were lacking Schust in the middle...needless to say, things look like they will still be interesting in WM despite Bowsers prediction of being a national contender

The beauty is it still counts as six wins. Gotta beat the easy teams.

I'm curious to watch Calvin fans reactions over Powell's play the next 3 years.  There are going to be nights when they are able to ride him like a horse, and nights where they'll be begging him to stop jacking, or pleading for KVS to take him out.  There were obvious glimpses of both ends of the spectrum last year but little was spoken of his "off" nights ( I respect that Knight fans).  Watched him play multiple times in hs and for every 7-10, there was a 1-10 (In a quarter.  The only player i've watched in the last 10 years of hs ball take more shots per game was Austin Thornton).  He is fearless (i love that), he knows what he is on the floor for, and more importantly, Coach knows what he's capable of every time he steps on the court and allows him to do his thing.

After watching Powell, I like to think of him of a more polished version of Jimmy Strunk, might remember him from a few years back. Powell does an excellent job of taking his man of the dribble and creates extremely well for others...some people don't like the added flash that sometimes gets him in trouble, but the flash is what usually gets opposing players on their heels although I feel as though he has the mindset of the 2 guard, just not the body for it, at least not yet...it will be interesting to see where KVS plays him, especially if this freshman class is as promising as it looks
