The officials obviously had an effect on the game, if not we wouldn't be talking about them.  That's sad, because Olivet outplayed Calvin last night.

Olivet played well but the refs didn't lose the game for them.  Sure bad calls were made but bad calls went against both teams.  In games like that you can't let the officiating get into your head.  Good teams can still get it done.

At this juncture, can 3 MIAA teams still get in?

Oldknight,

I see what you are syaing, but the reality is that no one would argue that Olivet is a better team than Calvin. Calvin is clearly better, but Olivet played better. It is definitely harder for the away team that is not as good to come in and win a game, especially when the refs make questionable calls against them. When you are an underdog you need al lthe help you can get. You need every bucket to fall and the ball to always bounce the right way (Like Hope at Calvin) to pull off the upset. This also means you cannot have refs blow any calls. It seemed as if they did and that is unfortunate. Oh, well. It is good news for me. It means Hope can beat Albion and beat Calvin in the MIAA finals. There is nothing better than sweet revenge.

If Albion beats Hope I would put all 3 in.  If Hope wins then the Brits may not be able to get one of the last spots.

Considering how the two meetings between Albion and Hope have gone, it could go either way.  It will definitely be a hard fought game I can tell you that.

Perhaps "Sir Not Appearing in this Film?"

Perhaps Knightslappy ought to change his moniker to "Sir Robin, the not-quite-so-brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, who had nearly fought the Dragon of Angnor, who had nearly stood up to the vicious Chicken of Bristol, and who had personally wet himself at the Battle of Badon Hill".

No problem RastaRob. Knightslappy is the person who should be offended anyway. Just don't ever confuse me for goodnight.  ;)  I'll weigh in on this topic too (for oldknight, not Knightslappy). I agree that in many ways Olivet outplayed Calvin on Wednesday. But I have always believed that part of a team's play includes how well or poorly it deals with those factors over which it has little or no control. Bad breaks happen to both teams during the course of a game. These things include good shots taken that repeatedly rim out, lucky shots taken by an opponent that go in after a play is well defended, and rebounds that one team seems to have controlled only to see them mysteriously find their way into the hands of the opponent.  Bad breaks also include referees calls (or noncalls) that irritate players and coaches. From sitting near the action in the north end zone I can tell you that there were several possessions in the second half when Veldhouse penetrated the lane, got bumped on his way up but missed the shot. Any one or all of these could have legitimately been called shooting fouls but the ref held his whistle and let play continue. I sensed on a couple of these noncalls that Veldhouse was not entirely pleased with a noncall but, to his credit, he didn't let that fact negatively influence his later play. A lot is made of the fact that he shot (and made) 14 free throws in the last 6 minutes but every one was a clear foul on Olivet in my judgment. Olivet by contrast, didn't deal nearly as well as did Calvin with their frustrations (though to their credit they did play hard to the end) and this difference in frustration management was the biggest difference between the two teams Wednesday.

one quick post before I hit the pavement....  Hornets again need to keep this game in the 60's and play with in themselves. Poise will be key, esp with all the outside distractions that could come into play.  Looking forward to my trip to GR tonight. Safe travels.

Beat Calvin.

i.e., deal well with frustration management.

I think the real answer is based on the upsets in other conferences.  Regardless of what Albion does tonight, I think they will get in unless you see some big upsets in the NCAC and OAC.  Those two conferences should get 2 teams in each, which should leave room...but then you also have to loook at the national picture and hope for a lack of upsets there too.

If Albion beats Hope tonight it will seriously improve their prospects for an at large regardless of what happens elsewhere.

John Rusnak

After I posted I looked over to the east to see what was happening...

York got upset last night and they are a now lock for an at large, so that's potentially one less spot that really never entered my mind as a possibility.  If Salisbury were to beat Catholic tomorrow, that would open the door for 3 CAC teams.  If Catholic wins, I had both them and York going, so it would end up being a wash.
