Alma 68-64 over Trine. Schneider with two huge 3s in the closing minutes, one of which immediately after Ian Jackson hit two FT's to tie the game with 51 seconds to play. Great ending, and a great win (or loss, depending on how you look at it) in the eyes of this Knight fan.

Adrian cold or is it the pressure of Hope's defense?

The win lifts Calvin into a tie for third with Trine, but the Knights currently hold the tiebreaker there with the head to head win.

Sounds like Rietema got laid out on a pick late in the first half and was suffering from some headaches at halftime. KVS said they wanted to "do the right thing" and hold him out of the second half. Hopefully he'll be OK going forward.

I promise it was 68-64....live stats gave a 3 pointer to Alma's Chris Williamson with 4 seconds left, but that should have been Jackson. Note the assist was from a Trine player and the Trine foul immediately after.  :)

Also, the missed 3 with 1 second left was Jackson.

Really makes no difference to me- just thought it curious.  Alma with another impressive (albeit a bit of surprise) win

Except a clean block and a clean steal right near the end.  :'(  (probably the worst crew I've seen this year)
Unless you get the bald guy and Steggman, the combo at the Calvin at Alma game.  Thought Hargraves would come unglued.

Don't worry, hargraves always looks like that ;D

Hope 64 Adrian 47

An interesting one from Adrian tonight.  Very physical game from the tip and that carried through out the contest.  Adrian did a pretty amazing job on the boards and kind of out hustled Hope for most of the game.  I think both teams played tough defense, both were able to get the ball inside and no body in a striped shirt was willing to call any kind of foul within a couple feet of the basket.  So for periods of this one it looked ugly as both teams had a free pass to hack away which led to a lot of blocks, a lot strips and a lot of knocking the ball out bounds close to the basket.  As a basketball fan it was a little tough to watch at times.

Hope's defense was excellent the whole night, I made the off hand comment at halftime that I thought a lot of Adrian's points were coming from garbage baskets (not a putdown), they were getting 2nd and 3rd chances and on more than a couple of occasions scrapped a loose ball off the floor and laid it in.  In the 2nd half I think Hope did a better job battling on the boards and those garbage points weren't happening for the Bulldogs.  A quick look a the p.b.p only shows 6 instances where Adrian scored on its first shot on a possession.   Adrian didn't shoot the ball well for sure, but Hope was a major reason why, Hope had 10 blocks and countless other shot alterations and pressure.  It just wasn't going to be easy for Adrian to score.

Adrian's defense was also excellent, evidenced by Hope's season low FG%(pretty sure).  It was just tough to score, tough to get those easy baskets that Hope works so hard for.   For maybe the first time I've seen this year, Hope's perimeter game saved them a little.   There weren't many shots from say, 15 to 22 feet, but hey made a lot more of those than Adrian did.

A couple other observations........Adrian's Cody Barnes left the game late in the first half after taking what looked like pretty avg contact on a screen to the shoulder, he never returned and frankly Adrian's offense was never the same.  Neither were their rotations as a handful of guys played who don't usually.  It was odd and curious, almost like the Adrian staff was grasping to find anything that worked.

Mark White is usually excellent at calling timeouts, but on several occasions tonight he didn't call one when his team probably needed one.  His team looked exhausted about 3/4ths of the way through the first half.  They were playing hard and expending a lot of energy.

A lot of Adrian students in attendance tonight, made for a tough atmosphere.  Its always a good test on the road even better when the natives are into it.  Hope took a pretty big step towards the MIAA Championship tonight and they did it in a tough environment.  Passing grades all around.  But this was just game 1 of what should be a very physical week of play for Hope with Albion on Saturday.

I'm not much of a deep theological thinker, but every now a then a church sign catches my eye.  On 223 somewhere near Rome Center there is a Lutheran church who's sign might just keep me up tonight.

standings with +/-........+1 for road wins/-1 for home losses

Hope          9-0       +4
Adrian        6-3        +2
Trine          5-4       +1
Calvin         5-4        0
Albion         4-5        -1
Alma          3-6       -1
Kzoo          3-6        -2
Olivet         1-8       -3

Hope's win tonight puts them within a couple games of wrapping up the MIAA Championship.  Still some work to do on the road at Albion and Calvin.  Adrian is still in a really good position to finish 2nd, no Hope or Calvin remaining and the 3 teams behind still have a game with Hope to go among other match-ups.  Seeds #3 and #4 is looking like quite a battle to the end, some very key games for all 3 in the next 10 days or so.  I'd give Calvin the schedule advantage for the #3 spot right now.
