Anyone heading to DeVos for the other MIAA Championship this afternoon?

I'll be there--the Flying Dutch have to be legitimate contenders for a national title this year.  Being there on Tuesday and Thursday, I can say that they played the most intense defense I have seen.

As for last night... :)

It was a real treat to see the Dutchmen come back in a huge way in the second half.  They weren't perfect by any means, but they made the shots when it counted and also played tremendous, even dominant defense in the second half.

Only sadness for the Hope/Albion game was the behavior of some Calvin students following the game.  Many Hope fans were sitting in what is traditionally the Calvin student section and they just came over to get their seats, pushing older Hope fans out of the way to do so.  There was plenty of time before the next game, too bad they couldn't have been a tad more respectful.

Looking forward to a tremendous matchup tonight--more than winning, it's either team's game to lose.  Have a great time, everybody!

Yes ... ironically Holland is the only place the Lady Knights can get any gym space to shoot around today.  Apparently few Calvin people realize the women have a team.

In the second half of the season Hope has come from behind a few times to win.  Case in point...Tri-State@Hope, Olivet@Hope, Hope@Tri-State, and MIAA tourney vs. Albion.  You can read this one of two ways, Hope underestimates their opponents and get lax in their defense or over confident in their own ability.  On the other hand it could be said that Hope can come from behind and take control of the game.  It all depends on your perspective.

Is the game being broadcast on WGVU tonight?

I doubt it, but I could be wrong. Usually WGVU needs some decent planning-ahead time to cancel Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street in order to make room for Hope v. Calvin and since this wasn't a "for sure" matchup they probably won't broadcast it.

randomthoughts

Saw both games last night, my thoughts:

Both games were what college basketball at the Division III level should be about...  Great effort, solid officiating, great heart from all four teams.  The two better teams won last night.

Albion killed themselves with free throw shooting.  Everytime they threatened to get back in the game after Hope's 17-0 run, they would head to the line and miss a few freebies, which just killed their ability to generate any momentum.  Also, anyone notice how league MVP (if he is voted as such) Brandon Crawford let Andy Phillips by him for 5 offensive boards?  I thought Hope used the extra possessions to their benefit, especially in the second half.

Calvin just had too many horses for the Hornets last night.  Kzoo went cold for about 10 minutes in the second half and that was all she wrote.  Not bad for a team that lost its two top scorers from last year's team and was picked to finish last in the league.  I thought the Kzoo student section was funny, engaged, and the banter back and forth between them and the Calvin student section was very entertaining.  That is what college basketball is all about.  Ever see a Duke-UNC or Duke-Maryland game?

Best of luck to both teams this evening and whoever makes the NCAA's.  If Calvin struggles shooting the ball (38% last night) they will have a hard time winning.  However, if they hang around, it will go down to the wire again.

And finally, any non calvin fan has to be HATING the idea of Veldhouse for 3 more years.  That kid is just special, especially for a freshman.

K student section "let's play football " classic. Sitting across from the student section one could see  the Calvin student body smiling at the creativity of the K cheers. Calvin alums may have thought it disgraceful but the students didn't.

There's nothing disgraceful or offensive about the "Let's play football" chant but its just not a classic anymore. The first time I ever heard it I laughed and thought it was pretty creative but it's not anymore--its just a lazy fallback line I've heard for years. It's time to put it back on the shelf because it lacks the punch and humor it once had.

Kind of like "Where's your banner??"  ;)

18 turnovers each.  Sounds like both teams are tight, and nervous.
It sounds like Calvin may be running out of gas 42-37.

Anyone know the likelihood of Hope or Calvin getting a bye in the first round of the NCAA (assuming both make it)?

If Hope wins tonight one could make a case for them getting a bye, but based on the total # of teams in the field I think it is more probable they will have to play them all.  Calvin may get a home game for the first round, but suspect if they get in it will be road trip time.

Sounds like the Hope women are the real deal, but we knew that before the game started.  Calvin too many turnovers, and Calvin missing f.t's doesn't really help.
