Adam Dunn made the AL All-Star team and was named Sporting News AL Comeback Player of the Year in 2012.
His batting average: .204.

And he drew a bazillion walks and hit for power and was a fairly valuable hitter.

Seriously... Take a pair of vintage 80's MC Hammer pants and make shorts from them. ADIDAS is awesome!  ::)

NAIA bracket, Davenport, Madonna and Rochester will represent the state.   http://www.naia.org/fls/27900/1NAIA/SportsInfo/Championships/2013DIIMBB/2013_DIIMBB_Bracket.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=27900

Rochester is the most intriguing...went 20-4 on the season or 21-3 depending on who you ask.  They lost 6 games this year, I guess some counted others didn't and they disagree.  Anyway all 6 losses were to D1 programs and they beat everyone else.  As an independent it must be difficult for them to schedule games.  They played IU-Kokomo 3 times.....in a row.  Judging from the scores, this probably got boring.

*    30   7:00 PM    @    Indiana University Kokomo   W-89-47   recap       16-3  1-0
*    9   10:00 AM    vs.    Indiana University Kokomo   W-77-53   stats       17-3  2-0
*    10   10:00 AM    vs.    Indiana University Kokomo   W-71-45           18-3  3-0

They are also the top seed in the USCAA National Championship which is played entirely this weekend before heading to Branson for the NAIA II Championships.  Odd!

Titan Q

For those here who like to look at efficiency numbers, I need a little help.  I received the following note from a Division III head coach...

Good Morning, Bob--
About 4 years ago you sent me a formula for calculating Pts/100 possessions. I still have the spread sheet, but I don't know how to interpret it. What is considered good, bad and elite? Is there a guide or key I can access? Is the spread between the two the key stat?
We averaged 101.7 on offense and allowed 94.5 on defense per 100 possessions. Any insight you can give would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Sac or KnighSlappy or others, any thoughts?  Thanks.

I sort of use 100 as the middle.

Maybe a chart like this for offense
>113  elite
108-113 NCAA Tournament quality
103-108 above average
98-103 average
93-98 below average
88-93 poor
<88  consider selling insurance

Maybe a chart like this for defense
<85  elite or you probably didn't play anybody
85-90 NCAA Tournament quality
90-95 above average
95-100 average
100-105 below average
105-110 poor
>110  you, you're not good

The difficulty is figuring out whats good against the schedule that was played.  If I had two teams that were 101.7 and 94.5 but one played in the CCIW and one in the SLIAC I would need something to differentiate that.  Strength of schedule has to come into play here somewhere, something I've struggled to find an answer for.

I forget exactly where I got all this years ago now but kenpom.com does the efficiency stuff for D1, his site is a good resource (the D1 scale would be slightly different than D3).  Unfortunately some of it is subscription only.

Calvin up two at the half: 25-23. Not many surprises about the style of play -- although Rose-Hulman apparently didn't start their regular line-up and is using more subs than normal.

Another impressive victory for the Knights.  If their guards continue to play poised, make the extra pass and refrain from shooting contested jump shots, they could make a nice little run.  With the number of players they have that can hit a 14-22 foot jumper, contested looks should be few and far between. Their defense speaks for itself.

Congrats to the Hope women. We have two MIAA wins tonight with the Knights winning 72-52. After a low scoring first half that went to form, Calvin shredded RHIT's defense in the second, making 18 of their first 21 shots in the half--they finished 18-22 when Tyler Kruis had his layup blocked with 1:21 left in the game . Even on a computer screen you could see that Calvin's length really bothered the home team. A sign of Calvin's depth shows when Jordan Brink can be a non-factor, not score a point and the Knights win by 20.

A couple of observations after looking at the game from a computer screen:

Calvin's length and ability to defend around the basket made RH pretty much a one dimensional, jump shooting club. After RH pressed the first time and got a quick turnover, I wondered why they pulled it off. The answer to that question came quickly--every time Calvin broke the press, they scored. I found it interesting that after Strickland scored 11 in the first half on Rietema, Calvin switched up and put Snikkers on him. Tom is a very underrated defender and he seemed to bother Strickland who didn't shoot well after the break.

Nice wins by Calvin's men and Hope's women!  Calvin really dominated in the second half.  It is really a help with the distances involved to be able to see the games on the computer.  Since I cannot get the tournament brackets to show on my computer, who do the teams play next?

Calvin plays the winner of Northwestern (MN) vs. UW-Stevens Point. Not sure about the Hope women.

EDIT: From the bracket I looked at, it appears Hope's women play the winner of Cornell vs. St.Thomas.

Rose-Hulman gives up more points tonight to Calvin than they did any time this season. Calvin's margin of victory is larger than than the combined points of all of Rose-Hulman's loses this year.

UW - SP currently up by 10.

I believe that Hope plays the winner of St. Thomas and who ever St. Thomas played -- Cornell, I suspect.

Calvin meets the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point next Saturday night.  UWSP handled Northwestern of MN tonight 71-54.

It would have been a lot tougher to play a program like Steven Point the next day rather than have a week to prepare.   The same can be said for UWSP, it would be a lot tougher for them to play Calvin the next day rather than have a week to prepare.

Beating Point is doable for this Calvin team, won't be easy but it should be a competitive game.
