HopeConvert, thanks for posting the link . . . and I can't resist the bait. 

http://sweatscience.com/return-of-the-hot-hand-in-basketball is a synopsis of that study, in which, unlike previous studies, there was a slightly increased tendency to make a free throw after making one.  And there appears to have been some tendency for players who believe in the hot hand myth to overshoot after making one (thus accounting for the slight anti-hot-hand result).  In any event, the findings seem not close to the supposed hot hand phenomenon that fans, announcers and players (mis)perceive in real game flow.

My conclusion: if my anecdotal observation and my expectation-influenced recollections conflict with science (an aggregation of many observations), then I should be humble.  Consider the data.

And players:  if you've just missed an open shot or two, don't—thinking you don't have a hot hand—pass up the next good shooting opportunity.

Well, to revisit an old issue with some new studies, it turns out the "hot hand" theory is getting some reconsideration. Note also the advent of the "anti-hot hand," to which anyone who has played ball with me would have already averred.

I suppose this may be an interesting opportunity to wax on the limits of statistical analysis, social science, and science in general, but I'll spare you that. Still, I'll restate my oft-stated claim that if social science conflicts with observation, you're probably better off being skeptical about the science rather than the observation.

After a long day of fishing on Wednesday i came to think about Calvin basketball and the leaving of Tom Snikkers. In recruiting they haven't gotten many players of his position type... They have gotten Welch, Drews and Kronemeyer but are any of these ball players of the position Snikkers. Drews or Kronemeyer are to small (it reminds me too much of the kind of fish I caught ;D) and lack rebounding along with returning players such as Vallie or Huizenga. Or do they play Welch or Dykstra at that position or are they to tall and lack speed or shooting. (Neither of those seem to be a problem with either but if TyDyk lacked scoring from a power forward position it won't change much when he moves to a small forward. Unless he shoots more often which could help) But do they take risks playing people like Daley who took a large number of shots at the JV level and didn't always make as many as he would have liked. Also there is Devries who shows clutch shooting and great defense but didn't score on a regular basis. Mast could be a good fit showing a good shooting touch but he has seen limited action. Unless they go out and recruit a player to fill that position it overall may be a question mark.

It occurred to me this week that unless something drastic happens this will be the first summer in a few years without an MIAA coaching vacancy.

The Massey matchup of a hypotetical road trip by NMU to Calvin is not pretty (for the Wildcats): http://masseyratings.com/game.php?s0=193573&t0=1126&h=1&s1=193573&t1=5651

Via twitter today I found out that Joey Gaffin a shooting guard out of NorthPointe Christian is headed to Calvin. He doesn't have amazing career stats with only 35 buckets but shooting doesn't lie as majority of those are 3's.
