(I guess I'll test oldknight's forebearance on an NBA post from a CCIW first, MIAA second, guy! :))

Much to the surprise of most draft analysts, Trey Burke was still available at the Piston's 8th slot - and they didn't pick him!!! :o >:(  (He went 9th to Minnesota.)  I've about had it with Joe Dumars.

In related news (which I just made up), the Piston's ticket manager resigned this evening. ;)

Nope, didn't resign, the job was simply eliminated as it made no sense to pay someone a salary for what equates to about 1 hour of work per week - which is all about throwing the unused tickets in the recycle bin.

A few days ago Miguel Cabrera was on pace to log over 500 total bases for the season.  The Major League record is 427 in Babe Ruth's incredible 1927 season..........in 151 games :o

Cabrera has never logged more than 377 in a single season, he is more likely to gravitate to normalcy than to keep up this torrid pace.  If he does repeat his hot run of late 2012 added to this spring he undoubtedly will log one of the best seasons in Tigers history and probably among the best in Major League history.  That said he's doing stuff that hasn't been done in Detroit since the 30's and 20's by guys like Gehringer and Cobb.

My two favorite stats that get flashed every game are his 8 consecutive months with 20 rbi's and his ridiculous +.500 BA with runners in scoring position.  The list of names who could do no better than the previous record of 6 months is pretty staggering.  The +.500 BA w/RISP speaks for itself.
And they still only have the 7th best record in the AL.   >:(

Sure, but they have the best Pythagorean Record in the AL. Most runs scored and 4th fewest allowed per game. Cream will rise.
Still waiting for that cream to rise...   ;D

still +4 in the win column over last year.  :-\

By the way

Cabrera extended his streak of .295 avg/20 RBI months to 10 in a row.  The next closest in baseball history is 6.

This morning goodknight's father slipped the constraints and travails of the present life to be reunited with his bride of many years. He was a truly polite, humble and accepting man of grace whose presence at Calvin basketball games will be missed. Since the dominie lived a full life and was ready to go, the pain may not be as great for his son--and my friend--living on the lakeshore, but it still is a loss to be acknowledged. My condolences to goodknight and his extended family.

Tom Snikkers will be playing for Aris Leeuwarden in the Dutch league this upcoming season. Last season, Michigan's Zack Novak played in that league for Zwolle. The link below contains the (awkwardly) translated announcement. Among the things I learned is that Snik is 1.94 meters tall.

Alma announced their incoming class. Some talent in that group along with a couple of 6-5 guys will help with their lack of height. Another one that is kind of a new one is Charlie Helmer who quit halfway through last season.

The translated posts aludes to Tom getting a Dutch passport based on his heritage. I assume the league has some manner of foreign player cap (as many/most European leagues have) and wonder if this would allow him to count as a domestic player for the league.

It might. Tom's Dad was born in the Netherlands and never became an American citizen. I suspect that since Tom's father is a Dutch citizen, the Dutch professional league considers his son to automatically count as a domestic (i.e., Dutch) player. That would explain the Dutch passport Tom is traveling to Chicago to obtain.

Here is a slightly less tortured translation of the press release:

Tom Snikkers will play next season in the Kalverdijkje (Sports Center in Leeuwarden).  The 22-year old Snikkers played 4 years of NCAA Division III for Calvin College, where he averaged 13.4 points per game last year.  In his college career he scored 1464 points.  Snikkers will receive a Dutch passport this month.  Snikkers roots are grounded in Dutch soil.
The small forward is known for his strength and explosiveness.  Last season Snikkers’ team won the MIAA conference championship as well as the MIAA tournament, after which Calvin College reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Div III tournament.
Calvin College is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where many Dutch immigrants settled, as well as in  the surrounding area.  Ergo, the new Aris acquisition played with teammates named Rietema, Brink, Huizenga, de Vries, de Bour and Dijkstra.
Snikkers is the fourth (Dutch) player slated (to play for Aris) following Dexter Hope, Tjoe de Paula, and Jan van der Kooij.

Hope Sports Report from Alan Babbitt today... weird. How many hundreds of emails from 'trenner' over the last several decades???

I can remember calling the hotline just after graduation to get basketball scores.  Somehow this was before the internet, or before I had internet.
