That would be great in Calvin could host either women or men . . . or both.

The article says the proposals cover the five-year 2014 to 2018 period (with the women booked this year to Wisconsin Stevens Point).  But http://www.ncaa.com/sports/basketball-men/d3 indicates that 2014 men's final four will be in Salem.  So perhaps it's the four-year 2015 to 2018 span that's being considered?

I was confused by that too, but I've come to the conclusion they mean starting with the 2014-2015 season and ending with the 2017-2018 season. Still not 100% sure though.

Comments from KVS and MN as they appear today on mlive:

Comments from coach Kevin Vande Streek

• On the team experience:

"We also have some new faces. We have three freshmen, two transfers and two up from jayvees, so we have seven kind of new guys. We have our frontcourt returning, which is a good place to start. But, again, losing two first-team all-conference players ... leaves our pretty young and inexperienced in the backcourt."

• On how he present's last year's accomplishments to this year's team:

"I try and impress that's this is a new team and last year is over and done with. That's probably been more of it then 'let's ride on the success of last year's team.' This group is quite a bit different. I think this group, come February, will have a chance to be a good team, but it will take us a little while to get there."

• On how different will this year's team look compared to last year:

"I think it will be less talented individually as far as play-makers are concerned. You know, Bryan Powell and Tom Snikkers and even Dave Reitema ... that individual talent is missing. So I think we'll be a little more ball movement kind of team."

Comments from coach Matt Neil:

• On looking at the team:

"We have a number of guys who come back with experience but we're really, really young. We have five sophomores and four freshmen .. but we feel real good about the work ethic right now. We do return three seniors with playing experience in Caleb Byers, Nate Van Arendonk and my son Grant ... One thing we've been most pleased with is everyone came back in great shape and the other is the work ethic is far, far greater level than a year ago. And that shows some maturity."

• On how the team will look differently from last year:

"We teach every day and we're looking to get tougher every day. We have some young guys who had some significant playing experience a year ago with (sophomore point guard Ben) Gardner and (sophomore center Brock) Benson in particular. It's hard not to look at them as only sophomores. I think we're different in that we're a bit more talented at the guard spots right now. But our bigs will come along with (Nate) VanArendonk, Benson and we have a couple young freshmen. But we'll just have to see how the work in progress continues throughout the year."

• On the expectations of using a sophomore point guard in Gardner:

"A year ago, when Colton Overway went out with a broken foot, we were 9-8. We ended up winning nine of our last 10 with Benny at the point. I think that's one of the reasons he was named a captain this year because he's shown good leadership. He's done a nice job of letting the game to him ... He's still going to make some mistakes, but it's something definitely to build on."

Yes, thanks for the heads-up on that. The NCAA release covers fall sports as well, so it said 2014-18 and I failed to account for that.

I scratched my head at first too, but I think I have it figured out. Coaches don't vote for their own team so each team gets seven votes. Calvin got six first place votes (6 points) plus one second (2 points) for a total of 8 points. Hope got five second place votes (10 points) plus two firsts (2 points) for a total of twelve.

This is what oldknight does for me, over and over again.  I'm befuddled, and he helps me make sense of the world.  I suggest you buy him a beverage at the Curragh or NHBC before the game in Holland this season.  ;)

Not to create confuse everyone, but some of the other numbers don't seem to add up. Adrian apparently got seven votes for third place (7 x 3 = 21) but how then could Trine have 26 points? The best they could have done is get seven votes for fourth place and that would be 28 points (7 x 4). Now I'm befuddled. Guess I need to head over to Curragh's or NHBC--or both--for my free beverage. I'll just say I know sac.

Calvin and Hope took up only six of the eight second place votes, so Adrian probably didn't get their 21 points purely on third place votes.

a possibility is:

TEAM   1   2   3   4   5   6   7   PTS
CALV   6   1   0   0   0   0   0   8
HOPE   2   5   0   0   0   0   0   12
ADRI   0   2   3   2   0   0   0   21
TRIN   0   0   3   3   1   0   0   26
ALMA   0   0   2   1   2   2   0   32

KZOO   0   0   0   1   1   3   2   41

Can't be, if Adrian was #2 when Hope was #1, where are Calvin's 3rd place votes.  Or where are Hope's 3rd place votes.

Two or three of these and the math wouldn't matter much would it?

You don't vote for yourselves so that would mean Hope voted Calvin one and Adrian two and Calvin voted Hope one and Adrian two.

Aha. So it takes a graduate of Calvin's Engineering Department to revisit the assumptions and recalculate all the data. 8-) KS no doubt was a prized pupil of Professor Hoeksema, a high school classmate of mine. I think I'll have a celebratory beverage at Curragh's and NHBC.

Alma roster (which requires no math)

http://goalmascots.com/sports/mbkb/2013-14/roster

"No real surprises in the preseason poll in my mind," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "I think third through eighth place is really up for grabs. Albion finished eighth last season and were probably four to five plays away from being fourth.

"I think the teams that finished third through eighth last year will all be better or the same. Calvin and Hope might not be quite as dominant but is still above everyone else. It will be a very competitive league."

Mr. Ypsi

I'm now gonna confess that I saw the goalmascots many times before it sank into my feeble brain that it was NOT 'goal mascots', which made little sense, but 'go alma scots'! :P
