The latest D3Hoops top 25 now has Calvin at 14 and Wheaton at 22.  Hope is not mentioned at all, but I suspect that is a result of their so far challenging schedule and may change later in the season.

QuoteYeah, I've heard that when teams play teams that are better than them and lose more games than they win, then they usually don't get ranked.  I guess that makes sense.

No one would argue against that statement, but it seems to miss the point that Hope gives many indications that it is significantly better than its record would indicate.  While nobody would expect them to be ranked with the current record, they may prove to be for more formidable in league play than some might expect.

I don't think anyone will be overlooking Hope when league play rolls around.  ;D

Finlandia's starters scored a total of 5 points and were 2-18 from the floor.

With fans restless at the break, Calvin scored the first 15 points of the second half to pull away to a more comfortable 76-23 lead. ::) When you play a game where it's obvious from the opening tip that you're clearly the better team you merely want to accomplish two goals: 1) don't get sloppy, and 2) don't get hurt. Mission Accomplished (other than a bonk on Tyler Kruis' nose that drew blood). I can't remember the last time I've seen Calvin overmatch an opponent as badly as they did Finlandia. Game notes:

--former MSU star Drew Neitzel sat in the Calvin student section and stayed the entire game.

Finlandia scored just over 1/2 point for every 10 miles traveled.

Doug Wentworth quote of the day: " well, we're 3 minutes in, and it's 12-2. We only have 37 more minutes of this."

I was impressed by the offensive ability of Austin Parks and Brad Visser.  Those 2 plus Jordan Daley give Calvin some young guards with some real scoring potential.  Visser had some great lay ups in traffic today.

Even though we have very little data on Brad Visser (only 36 college minutes played to date--17 of them today) it's obvious that he has the tools to be a very, very good guard at the D3 level. He has the knack for getting open and scoring in a variety of ways, under control, always winds up square to the basket when he shoots and is effortless in doing so. I know the Knights have several players who can contribute off the bench but as the season progresses, and as Brad continues to be exposed to the college game, he will only improve. Today Visser had a beautiful wrap-around move in the open court followed by a spin move in the lane that led to a layup under and between a pair of befuddled defenders. That one raised an eyebrow or two among fans. In 36 minutes of action this year (basically one full game) Visser is 11-21 from the floor and has scored 27 points. He's instant offense off the bench and I think it's going to be tough to keep his playing time down to garbage minutes at the end of blowouts.

I would agree, watching his high school highlights I would have guaranteed he was going to go D2 or even D1 but with confusion with his class as Central Michigan he wound up at Calvin. He would be a definite starter if it wasn't Jordan Brinks 4th year and his defense wasn't so spotty.

Alma led until 9:26 of the first half before a big Wheaton run gave the Thunder a double-digit lead, Alma never really threatened to get it under that.  Wheaton led by 28 at one point.

Visser entered Saturday's the game before TJ Huizenga did (around the 13 minute mark in the first half). I'm not sure if that was a reflection of the particular game -- Calvin was up by 20 already -- but it may be that he's already worked his way into the 10-man rotation. We'll have to wait and see if this is a thing.

Minutes from Saturday:

Parks: 20
Van Loo: 19
Stout: 18
Visser: 17
*Brink: 15
*Daley: 15
*Kruis: 14
*DeVries: 14
*Dykstra: 14
Mast: 13
Huizenga: 12
Brower: 10
Leach: 10
Welch: 9

Minutes were pretty even all around, but it almost looks like a neat grouping of what could be considered the 2nd, 1st, and 3rd teams.
