Albion 77 Olivet 55

Nice quick game at Kresge, Olivet probably did about as well as they could with basically 4 of their 5 starters and 4 JV players.  Crucial win for Albion, clinches at worst a tie for 4th.

Olivet:  Rogers 19, Miller 15, Krum 11.......Miller with 5 treys
Albion:  Ridgell 16, Evans 14, Hurth 13, Oakes 10

Kalamazoo 65  Adrian 62

Kzoo trailed by 14 early in the 2nd half and fought all the way back.  Exciting finish with Adam Peters making a put-back +1 to lead by 1 with 5.6 to play.  Adrian threw the ball away on the subsequent inbounds.

Adrian:  Jackson 16, Rodak 11
Kzoo:  Dykema 13, Carey 11, Shoenfeldt 10

A good win by Calvin this afternoon.  They out scored Trine 22-10 in the last 11 minutes of the game.
Jordan Daley(10), Jordan Brink (14), and Tyler Kruis (9) had 33 of Calvin's 37 second half points.  Brink hit a huge 3 with 1:25 to go to tie the game.  Trine scored to go up 64-62 with just over a minute to play.  On Calvin's next possession Tyler Kruis hit a 3 as the shot clock was winding down to give Calvin their first lead of the second half.  Daley and Brink both hit pressure free throws to finish it off

The Calvin radio guy did a nice job with the KVS post game interview.  I didn't understand why TJ Huizenga played so much in the second half but he was in because Calvin played zone.  KVS said they went to a zone because Calvin couldn't keep Trine in front of them, he said,  "Calvin is not blessed with great lateral quickness."

There was also a good exchange at the end of the interview.  KVS had challenged the interviewer before the game to work a bowling term into the post game interview.  KVS has the student in a bowling class.  When wrapping up the interview KVS mentioned that he had failed to work in the bowling term.  But, the interviewer had used the word "turkey" during the interview and KVS had not caught it.

Hope 70  Alma  67

The team that won might not have deserved to win.  The team that lost didn't deserve to lose.  Hope didn't look anything like a team playing for an MIAA Championship tonight.

Hope: VanArendonk 21,  Eidson 13, Gardner 11
Alma:  Beckman 25, Fairchild 11

Not having an 8 team tournament is just dumb!!!

If we had an 8 team tournament the team no one would want to play in the first round would be Alma.

standings with +/-........+1 for road wins/-1 for home losses

Hope    11-1     +4
Calvin   10-2     +5
Trine     7-5      +1
Albion   7-5      0
Kzoo     5-7      -1
Alma     3-8      -3
Olivet    3-8     -2
Adrian   1-11     -4

Hope has clinched a home game in the MIAA Tournament, they hold the tie-break over Calvin for the one seed at the moment

Calvin has clinched a home game in the MIAA Tournament

Trine and Albion play Wednesday, an Albion win would guarantee both a spot in the tournament and the third seed with two wins over Trine.  A Trine win guarantees a spot in the tournament but would need to finish out of a tie with Albion to hold the third seed (Albion hold tie-breaker if they split head-to-head by virtue of beating Hope)

Kzoo, needs to sweep remaining games and would need Albion to lose both games next week.  A tie with Albion creates a play-in game.  A tie with Trine would give the 4th spot to Trine based on head-to-head in Trine's favor.

Alma, Olivet and Adrian have been eliminated

Home teams are just 23-24  this year

What's left:
Adrian:    ALMA, HOPE
Albion:     @Trine, @Calvin
Alma:       @Olivet, @Adrian, KZOO,
Calvin:     OLIVET, ALBION
Hope:      @Kzoo, @Adrian
Kzoo:      HOPE, @Alma
Olivet:     ALMA, @Calvin, TRINE,
Trine:      ALBION, @Olivet

If you are going to lead for less than a minute in a game, make sure at least part of that minute is at the end.  The Hornets led early on a Keaton Adams three-pointer and then didn't lead again until an Adam Peters put-back in the final seconds.  Adrian couldn't miss early (made 4 of their first 5 three's), but thankfully went cold down the stretch.

It's always good to get a win on Senior Day.  This one isn't the Hornets' last home game, but it was a weekend with both teams at home so my guess is that it turned into the Senior celebration.  The older I get the faster time seems to move.  It is hard to believe that Mark Ghafari, Grant Carey, and Keaton Adams will player their final home game on Wednesday vs Hope.  It would be great for them to get that one to finish out their careers in the Anderson Center.  Here's hoping that the students come out in full force to support those guys and their teammates.  Win or lose, they have a lot to be proud of in their four year's at 'K', both on the court and off.

This is actually one of the dumbest things I've ever said on here.  I've intentionally kept my comments as brief as I could make them this year and apparently this was the best and worst I could think of all at once.  This was a great game and what the players deserved was some better commentary from me.  Hope did look like a team playing for an MIAA Championship last night because these are never supposed to be easy and these are exactly the kinds of games teams that want to be champions have to win.  I'm really sorry for this incredibly dumb post game comment all the players involved deserved much better.

Just a lot of weird things yesterday in the Hope/Alma game, but for me it boils down to two things -- Hope never plays extraordinarily well on senior day and Alma's standing in the league really doesn't represent the truth of who Alma is.  Nothing was clicking for Hope, especially early on, and Alma's defense and shooting dictated the vast majority of the game.  Kudos to Hope for hanging in there and gritting it out when it would have been easy to do less than that.

This is Hope's first less-than-double-digits win since January 22, and my hunch and hope is that it serves them well and motivates them over the next couple of weeks as they finish out league play and move into the tournament.

She's must be spending all her time on the metrics for the Pick Em contest, which she leads....

Alma:  Krause 19, Murawske 13,  Beckman 11, Edwards 10
Olivet:  Vondette  23, Haas 15, Rogers 10

As someone who was out and about the greater Lansing area tonight, props to Alma for making the drive down to Olivet, that couldn't have been fun.  Hopefully they return home safely.

Every time I see the name Beckman mentioned for Alma I think back to that sweet jump shot his Dad had for Hope back in the 80's when I first became a hopefan.... hoping I can make the trip up to Michigan some time in the next couple years and see young Mr. Beckman play against his Dad's Alma Mater, and perhaps even meet Mr Beckman to thank him for the memories.... congrats to all in the MIAA for another great season....
