Some folks here (and elsewhere) have questioned hiring a high school coach.  But doing so worked out well for Indiana State in 1946 when it hired its new coach away from South Bend Central High School (see http://tinyurl.com/NewHopeCoach).

Greg Mitchell holds the career 3-point percentage record at Hope with .464.

A certain member of last years team was allowed to shoot 32 three pointers even though his career average was only .281 from that distance.

Even if Coach Mitchell's (feels good to use that term again) son plays for him some day, chances are my wife won't be screaming "NO!'" when they pull up from behind the arc.

IWU's current coach came directly from Bloomington High - hasn't worked out too badly for them. ;)

I think Hope fans should be pretty excited.  Quality coach.  He should have lots of support all around.

If he can get the talent Hope has to grind like his Laingsburg boys did, watch out. After 2013 Class C final, Flint Beecher coach Mike Williams said Laingsburg was the best team they played all season, including Detroit Pershing, and it wasn't because of talent.

Agreed! Considering the circumstances, this is about as good of a hire I could have hoped for and probably better than I expected. 25 years of coaching experience with numerous coach of the year awards is impressive, regardless the level.

I wish I had more to offer, but I've only been able to catch one Laingsburg game live and that was several years ago at the Breslin Christmas Tournament.

Frankly what stood out that day was the ridiculous crowd support Laingsburg had.

This is a copy of part of Rose's bio:  "After graduating from Illinois Wesleyan in 1988 with a degree in business administration and mathematics, Rose worked as an actuarial assistant at Bloomington's State Farm Insurance before returning to school at Olivet Nazarene University, where he earned a master's degree in teaching in 1992 and served two seasons as a basketball assistant for Ralph Hodge.
Rose was an assistant basketball coach under Scott Thompson at Wichita State University from 1992-94, where his duties included evaluating and recruiting prospective student-athletes, monitoring academic progress, coordinating scouting and assisting with summer camps and clinics.

You are correct he did come to IWU directly from Bloomington h.s., but his prior experience is a tad different.

"Hope College and Greg Mitchell have mutually agreed to join ways. Hope will immediately cease a search for a successor as head men's basketball coach. The College will not comment further on this matter."

Defintely a different road than Coach Mitchell.  Not sure that the population of the city in which you coach high school means all that much - in fact it could be that it's harder to coach (and do well) in the smaller city.  Coach Mitchell is well know for getting a lot out of his players and for his teams beating more talented teams.
