Calvin has a hockey team but deems football as too violent a sport.....brilliant.  It seems curling would be more Calvin's speed for ice sports.

It has nothing to do with violence.  The lack of a football team has nothing to due with a moral judgement on the game itself.  Its just a sport that doesnt have a team at Calvin.  Adding a team would more than double the entire current athletic department budget and would lead to a whole host of other reactions stemming from Title !X.  At this point, starting a team would be nearly impossible.

Just got back from the games--actually the game (singular) since I left at half of the Hope/Wisconsin Lutheran scrimmage. Lutheran is a last place MIAA team and Hope looked like a team on a mission, making mincemeat out of their opponent. That's all you need to know about that game.

Going into tonight's game I hadn't seen Calvin play consistently good offensive basketball since the second Albion game and tonight's contest started with more of the same with the Knights down 8-0 after 4 minutes. Then subs came in and turned things around quickly fueled by aggressive defense and the Knights finally started shooting the ball with some consistency. The surge was fueled by Zoerhof who had a career night. Soon after his entry he stole the ball near midcourt, took off to the basket, seemingly leaving his feet near the free throw line for a thunderous slam. That play seemed to stir not only the Knights but even the Dutch faithful who had gathered early and who seemed to enjoy that particular play too, though not quite as much as Calvin fans. Calvin, despite getting killed on the boards all night, started to slowly pull ahead largely on the strength of turnover disparity and excellent 3 point shooting. At the end of the half with Calvin ahead 32-25 and LaCrosse playing for the last shot the fans faked the LaCrosse player into a premature and panicked shot with the standard early clock countdown--something we often see tried but a tactic that rarely works. Dustin Smith easily grabbed the air ball, took about 4 dribbles and let it fly from half court banking it in to the delight of the crowd. For the second time in one night I was witness to the amazing sight of seeing Hope fans cheering a spectacular Calvin play. What's this world coming to?

Calvin was pretty much in control the second half I thought but the big guy (Werner) is a human vacuum cleaner on the boards and Conigliaro a fine shooting guard. I normally don't like to mention the officiating much but I thought the refs were awful, particularly in the first half. Not just awful, but awful with respect to Calvin. I would be curious to hear from any Hope poster who saw both halves to get a more unbiased opinion on this.

Congrats to the Knights on their win... after reading the last 4 pages, did realist not get the memo that said post in-game updates on the other thread?

Great game for the dutchmen too. First 18 points were scored without a single missed shot, that is impressive. Can't really say much about the game, the score and the stats speak for themselves.

My favorite part of the game? The poor Wisc.-Luth guy that airballed TWO freethrows, and the dew crew responding in the form of a cheer "hit the rim"  ;D

Thanks for the update oldknight.  Not being there it was hard to guage the calls, but the disparity did raise the eyebrows a little.
Did you know the refs. were from Ohio?  Does this mean that at least two states have refs. of dubious ability?

Not at all... I'm rooting for Calvin... I know we can beat Calvin with no problem... we have already done so over 159 mintues and 59.3 seconds of hoops this year.

Actually it is 119 minutes and 58.3 seconds if I use the math I lernt in elementary
skool.  I couldn't afford a prestigious education at Hope so maybe the math you learned there is  superior to my humble education.

I also thought the game was 40 minutes long so I don't understand this point of emphasis about 1.7 seconds.  Its not like Veldhouse made a 20 pointer at the buzzer.

You maybe clairvoyant and be able to state tomorrow night that Hope led for 159 minutes and 58.3 seconds but I pray  that won't be the case.

Calvin was definately the better team. UW-LaX got off to a great start, mostly because the bounces seemed to go their way.  I counted about 5 blocked shots that could have easily been ruled as such that were called fouls against Calvin.  The officiating was very different than MIAA play, which makes me wonder how tomorrow's game will play out.  Must be something about players not used to playing in the Dick that makes them miss the rim, UW-LaX had at least 5 airballs. Yikes.

MIAA: If you had bothered to read any of the posts you would have learned some people were having difficulty getting consistant updates.

UWL had 3 airballs in just the first 3 or 4 minutes of the game

Low class move of the night goes to the parent who had her approx 7 year old
daughter steal the big yellow hat off a Calvin student.  The 7 year old then runs the full length of the court to give it to a stunned Dew Crew member.  The 7 year old returns to her seat and gets a high five from her mother. An usher should have embarassed the mother by making her walk the hat back over to the Calvin student or telling her to leave.

I didn't know where these refs were from until reading this board when I got back. The MIAA has its own clinkers too but at least they usually screw up in a rather even handed way. The officiating was better in the second half.

I can deal with something like that but it got worse when a snotty little boy kept it going and ended up ripping the foam hat.  not cool.

The Hope Calvin game on Sat. will be on TV.  Comcast 15, and one other I missed
What the jake is Comcast 15?  Holland cable-access?  Here in GR our Comcast Local channel (the one that shows the Griffins, GVSU, etc) is channel 23.  Any chance Comcast in GR will pick up the game?

Good lord... they are kids, for crying out loud! Damn those evil Hope parents teaching those kids bad manners...

Maybe we can give them some negative Karma!!!  ;D

......or you should lighten up!  a lot!  ;D

Gosh can you imagine if I'd asked the Calvin ushers to throw out the kid running around the Calvin gym waving that flag last weekend.

Maybe I'll bring my 9-year-old daughter to the game tomorrow night and she and the little hat-stealing cutie-pie from Hope can go toe-to-toe at halftime.   :D

Seriously, anyone comes up with some intel on that cable access program don't be afraid to share it with the board.  Big win for Ferris State hockey tonight.  Beat the Buckeyes 3-0 ....
