I think that this is a fantastic idea. The one thing that the rivalry has been missing up to now has been Ultimate Fighting matches between small children.

HOPE 93 Wisc-Lutheran 51

I've been a D3 fan for about 16 years.......in that time I've often envied the easy first round game those Northeast powers have played.   Tonight I saw one.

UWL never had a chance and the Dutchmen simply went out and made sure right from the start this would not be a game.  What'd they make 8 in a row.

VanderHeide and Cramer were outstanding to start the game, Marcus was a bit miffed when he was pulled and frankly so was I.........I wanted to see him continue to tear up the nets.

51-31 at the half or something resembling that score........

Second half was about 8 minutes of the Hope starters doing what they did in the first half and 12 minutes of junk ball by both squads.  UWL couldn't hit anything in the second, Hope held them to 20 points.

UWL would have a difficult time finishing out of the MIAA basement but they had some quickness and challenged the ball well on defense.........and had a couple shooters, 33 was Morrisonesque from 3.  But overall they'd have a difficult time in the MIAA.

Good win, way to go Dutchmen.

A 15-minute halftime breaks up nicely into five, three-minute rounds ...

For the second time in one night I was witness to the amazing sight of seeing Hope fans cheering a spectacular Calvin play. What's this world coming to?

Yeah, but most Hope fans were all clapping whenever LaCross scored.  Not that I really care or anything.....

My thougths on Calvin/LaCrosse

Calvin played very well, and considering the start they bounced back nicely and really controlled the game from about midway through the first half on.

LaCrosse reminded me of a football team playing basketball.  They had a lot of muscular kids and certainly threw their weight around all over the court.  Calvin was really overmatched in this area but I was impressed how they held their own and as they have all year defended the paint nicely.

Other than Canigliano or whatever that non-dutch name was LaCrosse didn't impress me at all.  I expected more from a WIAC rep.  But on the other hand any win over a WIAC foe in tournament competition can be considered a good one.  Had they shot better things might have been a bit tighter but I think Calvin still wins.

How about Zoerhoff, the kid was en fuego tonight, had a couple nice throw downs too.

Gosh can you imagine if I'd asked the Calvin ushers to throw out the kid running around the Calvin gym waving that flag last weekend.

Except the Calvin kid didn't steal anything and damage it, and the Calvin kid is probaly about 5 years younger....

Hey, is the poster of "Big Yellow Hat" that sometimes posts in here who I think it is?

Not true, not even close.......the vast majority of Hope fans had blank stares on their faces all game long waiting for the main event.

The Dew Crew looked like they were taking naps.  No one in orange was sitting in the Lax section cheering them on........unlike 4 Knightclub members at Hope/Albion.  ;)

Several thoughts from tonight

- I thought the officiating in both games was better than anything I saw all year - they really let the guys play.  Were there some missed calls - yes, but the officials never got in the way of the game.

- Calvin should have won that game by 20.  I still can't understand how LAX stayed as close as they did.  Having said that, LAX could have really made things interesting if they had some decent clock management at the end.

- The only game I can think of that resembled the Hope / WLC game was when we played Andrews.  Barely a decent practice.  I was impressed with the number of students WLC had there, and their support throughout the game.

- Do they not teach defense in Wisconsin - neither LAX or WLC played defense worth a toot.  Guess I'm just spoiled by the kind of defense we see in the MIAA.

Can't wait for THE GAME!!!

Some thoughts on Zoerhof.

He was spectacular tonight and is an interesting study as a basketball player. He is a very athletic big man and plays the game with a lot of passion. Unfortunately his passion has often been a detriment to his game because it normally has been uncontrolled passion. He is almost the polar opposite of Veldhouse who plays with the game the passion of an assassin and who deals well with in-game frustration, a quality that has served him and Calvin well--and Hope not quite as well.

But tonight Tyler was more focused than I have ever seen him and he really gave Calvin a boost when they needed it. If he can consistently play the game with controlled passion he will become a fine player at Calvin.

Wow!  What an interesting night! :o

--First, an apology to Calvin fans.  Although I didn't ever post my predictions, I really, honestly thought from all I'd read and heard that LAX would be the better team.  How did this team beat Lakeland?  Bizarre.  Congrats, Knights.  You were clearly the better team tonight.

--As to the reffing; I agree with FDF; I thought the officating was refreshingly fair.  There were some missed calls both ways, but really, much better stuff than I have seen out of the MIAA refs.  I have nightmares of past NCAA tournament refs who were horrid, so I'm always a little nervous to see how a particular team of refs calls a game.

--Hats off to the Wisconsin Lutheran fans.  Even when their team was down by 40, even when there were mere moments to go in the game, they kept cheering and encouraging their team, right to the end.  Awesome.  That's a hard thing to do when you're being run out of the building.  They even had shirts made up with all 4 team names on the front and "Hope College, DeVos Fieldhouse, Holland MI, March 3-4" on the back.  Cool.

--Speaking of hats, my apologies again to the Calvin fans.  I agree that stealing the big yellow hat was a classless move.  And then to have it celebrated by her family, sheesh!  I remember how ticked I was when Calvin fans stole our 3's.  Why in the world would someone encourage their kid to steal?  Beats me, but I apologize.  I loved it when the Calvin fans sent their little guy to retrieve it.  A nice finish to an unfortunate event.

--Maybe it was just the night.  Maybe it was the crowd.  Maybe the fact that they were in the tournament for the first time.  But neither LAX or WL played defense worth a, well, you know.  I was (hold on to your big yellow hat) proud of the Knights for showing LAX what defense is all about.  There I said it!   ;D  If you ask me to repeat it, I might have to deny it, but there it is.   ;)

--Don't know how I will survive tomorrow night.   :P  I get physically ill at the thought of the Knights knocking us out of the tourney in our own building.  But time will tell.  Here's hoping everyone has fun tomorrow!

--On a side note to whomever might be reading -- Dutchmen, you rock!   ;)
