Ty Sabin had 38 for Ripon last night.   Is this the most points by a Calvin opponent since  ??? ??? ???

Marcus VanderHeide's 30 in 2008 is the only one I can think of, surely someone scored more since then.

Sac.  As a Calvin fan I wish you were correct on this one.  However, Calvin seems to be in the habit of allowing opposing players to have big nights on a regular basis.  For example, on 11-15-14 at VNA Anderson's Mcllaun scored 35.  Since than Calvin has allowed several other guys like: Felhaber OWU 29, Teuscher Wheaton 28, and Kjeldsen Carthage 26.

Turnovers are wasted possessions.  Calvin wouldn't need to rely on it's defense so much if it simply learned to hang onto the ball when we have it.  Ripon scored 18 points off 11 Calvin turnovers while scoring 7 points off 5 Ripon turnovers.

Olivet with 44 in the first half and they lead by 6 at the break. Must've been something in the water over at the Doubletree Hotel...

Olivet wins.  Not a pretty 2nd half.  Greensburg had 2 chances to tie with 3's

With Hope up 10 - 2 early one has to wonder if they are having a football let down?

Mtu better on d than anticipated.  Key is benson.  Score heavily in hopes favor when he's out there.  Bench play was really disappointing.

Mount Union 4/21 from behind the arc. Hope is lucky shots aren't dropping or else they would be in deep trouble.

Mount lives and dies by the 3.  Every guy in their rotation triggers from deep including their center.  We take the good with the bad and games like today are the bad!

Alma and Ripon go into OT at 72 apiece. Scots missed two front-end 1 and 1's the last 90 seconds of regulation and then missed the winning shot from right in front of the basket at the buzzer. Alma now leads 79-75 with under 2 minutes left.

Calvin pulls away from a narrow 31-29 halftime lead to beat UW-Oshkosh 75-63. 38-23 edge for the Knights on the boards. Jordan Brink with 21 points.

UPDATE:  Alma wins their first game of the season defeating Ripon 86-80 in OT. Nice win for the Scots.

Very nice win for the Scots, whom I've said all along are better than their record shows.

G  Luke Dreyer 6-2 Fr. Zeeland, has been added to Hope's varsity roster in place of Jordan Denham.  I have no reason for Jordan's absence.

Jordan Denham has transferred to Adrian and played 19 minutes for the Bulldogs in their loss to Lawrence Tech.  Best of luck to Jordan, I've always thought he had good potential but was never able to get enough minutes to gain the needed experience at Hope.   http://miaa.org/sports/mbkb/2014-15/boxscores/20141220_2a6v.xml?view=boxscore

It also appears the Bulldogs have lost Eric Lewis again who is no longer on the roster.

Lawrence Tech isn't good,  they have some curiously close losses to Bethel and Marian but that's a team coming off a 26 point loss to Marygrove.  LT has yet to win a game in the WHAC.

(Also posted this on the OAC board)

Mt. Union's 3 loss have something in common.  Wooster, St. Vincent and Hope all defended them well enough to keep a very good shooting team at 40% or lower.

Bad 3-point shooting nights are always tricky to find a reasoning behind them.  For Mt. Union, a usually very good 3-point shooting team, this was certainly an anomaly to their other games where they shot better than 40% in every game but one and that was 37 at Wooster.    Saturday Mount shot just 21% on 7-33.  There were some good looks here but I really felt a lot of those 2nd half shots were getting deeper and deeper with guys running at them.  You would know this if the $25 Million DeVos Fieldhouse provided video feed.

But, Hope's doing something right in defending 3's.  For the season all 8 of Hope's opponents have shot below and most well below their season average.

Game vs Hope       Season Avg minus the Hope game.
Whitewater     42.9%            44.6%
Steven Point    18.2%            38.2%
Cornerstone     25%              40.3%
Aquinas            23.5%           35.2%
Carthage          16.7%           34.2%
Wheaton          27.3%           38.5%
Greensburg      27.6%           33.3%
Mt. Union          21.2%           43%

Season           44-175   25.1%

I don't think this is a team getting lucky catching all of these team on cold nights.

Fun to see Mt. Union in person, I watched them on video a few times last year.  This team seems a bit different than last year in person.  Defensively they're much better than I thought they'd be, it wasn't easy for Hope to score and they usually had to work the ball a lot to get points.  They also looked much more physical in person and played with an edge I suppose you have to have in the OAC.  Overall enjoyable and I look forward to Hope's potential return trip to Alliance in a couple years.

Unfortunately this was a big loss within the region for Mt. Union and they now have losses to Wooster, St. Vincent and Hope.  It might be tough to get a high ranking within the Great Lakes Region without a good signature out of conference win unless they blow through the OAC, which isn't very likely.

I see Welch and Vanderbrug are now getting as many minutes as Stout and Dykstra.  They are being rewarded for their intensity and the effort of these underclassmen bodes well for Calvin's future.  Very impressive play this weekend by Parks as well.  He is a solid floor general and handles the ball well.
