Didn't see the game but what stood out to me in the stats was the huge disparity in free throws, and somewhat opposite of what you might expect given the Knight's easy win. Calvin was 2-6 from the line while FU was 19-23. Anyone who watched have any insights?

I don't know anything at all about Cameron Denney but he may be able to help Calvin this year. The kid averaged 11.5 minutes per game as a freshman for a D2 school which is promising. Nova Southeastern went 13-17 last year. Here's the bio from Nova's website:

AS A FRESHMAN (2013-14)
Played in 26 games, starting in one...Averaged 11.5 minutes per game and 2.7 points per game...Shot 25-for-61 from the floor on the season...Scored a career-high nine points against Livingstone (12/17)...Scored his second highest total two days later against Drury with seven (12/19).

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Denney was at Bedford North Lawrence HS in Bedford, Ind., before making the move to Norwell HS as a senior...Denney helped Norwell to an 18-7 record as a senior, averaging 14.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, making 56 percent of his field goal attempts and 44 percent (17 of 38) of his three-pointers...Besides earning all-conference and honorable mention all-state awards as a senior, Denney was chosen to the Border Wars All-Star Game pitting the best players from northern Indiana against the best from northern Ohio...In that game, Denney collected eight points and five rebounds and impressed coaches with his lock down defense.

PERSONAL
Majoring in biology...Held a 3.98 GPA in high school...Names his parents, Bill and Susan, as the most influential people in his life for raising him with a high moral standard...Assisted with the Special Olympics while in high school...Names Derrick Rose as his favorite athlete and the Chicago Bulls as his favorite sports team...Lists Criminal Minds as his favorite TV show and The Goonies as his favorite movie...Has two siblings, Bill and Graham.

Can't help you, FDF.  I barely watched.  Like most of the games I've seen this year, Calvin seemed to be less interested in competing than did its opponent. Hope someone can light a fire under this team.  Lots of talent, but pretty limited desire to this point.
I'm more impressed with Hope and how the Dutchmen are responding to their new coach than I am with
my Knights.

Some of the disparity in free throws came from the fact that Finlandia discovered that there best means of scoring was to drive hard to the basket during the second half.  They did that repeatedly and often scored the basket and were fouled in the process.  What was disappointing is that much taller players still seemed to  draw fouls constantly.  Any follow up on why Canonie and Visser apparently did not play?  Eligibility issues?

Danny Leach is no longer showing on the roster.  Didn't get a lot of playing time and Calvin is pretty heavy at the guard position.
Huizenga's return to action mat provide some of the hustle and energy that this team needs.  I this his minutes will expand.

I'm told that Canonie has been battling flu-like symptoms, and Visser has a minor ankle strain. Leach evidently dropped out of school at the semester break.

Finlandia's stat sheet shows Calvin was led in scoring by Brink with 20, Dykstra 17, and Parks and VanderBrug with 10 each. TJ Huizenga went 4-5 in 17 minutes and newcomer Cameron Denney saw his first floor action as a Knight getting 9 minutes. He didn't score but did grab 4 rebounds.

As a team Calvin shot the ball well overall (55%) but poorly from the arc going 4-16 on threes. Knights won the battle of the boards quite handily (48-33) but don't let that mislead you. I think this year's team is one of the poorest rebounding teams Calvin has had in quite some time because they keep giving up second, third and sometimes fourth shots on an opponent's possession. Finlandia grabbed 15 offensive boards today. Maybe an indication of a ho-hum attitude towards today's game which would mirror mine. I barely watched it. Or maybe this is the natural byproduct of a three guard offense.

I'm not sure the numbers bear that out.

Including today Calvin has grabbed 36% of the available offensive rebounds -- exactly average for a Calvin team over the last 14 years* (and better than the notable '05 and '14 squads). They've also grabbed 73% of available defensive rebounds which is good for 4th best over that same time span (only losing out to '09, '13, and '14). The overall rebound rate of 56% is currently 2nd, losing out only to 2013.

*The data I have go back through 2002.

The argument might be that they've played such poor rebounding teams that the numbers should be even higher -- and, who knows -- but that's not immediately obvious.

I think we're just used to Calvin giving up so few second chance looks -- the '13 and '14 teams were two of the best defensive rebounding teams of the last decade and a half -- that we've lost sight of what's normal.

Even today's rate - Finlandia getting a tick under 32% of their offensive rebounds - is no better than league average (or no worse than average from Calvin's perspective).
