Why I hate multipliers

Hope opponents records to date 2014:  60-29.   Hope OWP using NCAA approved calculation.   .681
Hope opponents records to date 2015 : 60-28.   Hope OWP using NCAA approved calculation.   .618

The difference is playing Whitewater/StevensPoint on the road vs at home.  Neither of which changes the quality of either team.

What's the deal with the odd starting times for the Men's BB games this year?  Calvin/Hope game in Feb starting at 6PM?

Discussed a little this summer.  It happens when one site is hosting a men's and women's game.  The women get the late game in 2015.  Calvin women are hosting Olivet that night in front of a quickly exiting crowd.
This something new?  Was there an issue with the old way?

As a big fan of the Dutchmen, but an even bigger fan of the Dutch, I have no problem with this year's schedule.  It's not your father's Oldsmobile, and the times they are a changing.

It is important to remember that going forward they will alternate which team goes first.  So men first this year, and women first next year etc. etc.  My guess would be that yes, the question why women always went first before was asked on more than one ocassion. :)

No one is saying that Trine isn't capable of beating Hope in IN, but when you look at Massey's prediction one sure has to like Hope's chances more than Trine's.

Massey says 23% odds for Trine which is basically flipping heads twice in a row. Happens all the time.

But whether the game is at home or on the road does change the quality of the opponent in a relative sense. It's simply tougher to beat a team on the road than it is to beat that same team at home; this is a fact that's not disputed.

The NCAA SOS multipliers may still be a bit heavy-handed, but the idea behind them is not wrong.

The MIAA seems to have adopted (without litigation) the approach created as a result of the much ballyhooed gender-equity lawsuit against the MHSAA several years ago that worked its way through federal court in Grand Rapids, ultimately reaching the US Supreme Court, before being a final decision was reached. That was the law suit filed by parents of some high school volleyball players who claimed their opportunities at college scholarships were diminished because--at that time--Michigan high school sports had girls basketball teams play in the fall and volleyball in the winter. Under the final settlement reached in that litigation, not only were the seasons changed but the judge jammed a requirement in the settlement that mandated every-other-year changes in start times for boys-girls basketball double headers. During last season's high school competitions, boys started Friday night double headers at 6 and a mass exodus to the doors commenced at around 7:30, just as the girls' teams were warming up. How doing that creates gender equality remains unexplained to this day.

::DORK ALERT::

The Trees

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light

But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'

Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

The GLIAC made this change a few years ago (and may have reconsidered that decision).  Here is an interesting article from the perspective of one of the Women's teams in the league...

That's an interesting article, and it's one that I think remains relevant in a lot of situations in which league administrators may be contemplating flipping the start times for men's and women's games. But did anybody else who read the article find this sentence:

QuoteThe one person was a unanimous male who brought up this issue to the GLIAC and threatened to sue if something wasn't done.

... totally jarring?
