Lots of teams on that second list with gaudy records signifying nothing, such as Hardin-Simmons, Rowan, Chapman and Dubuque.

Dubuque is Elmhurst's only "good" win and yet........ :-\

HOPEful

I brought this up in the past, but I think it's even truer today.

It seems obvious to me that Hope's tournament against Aquinas and Cornerstone continues to be more of a disservice than anything else. From a national perspective, dissenters are quick to point out Hope's 4 losses (obviously including the loss to Aquinas in the mix) but shrug off the quality win against Cornerstone as "oh, it's against an NAIA team so it doesn't count"... If the losses count but the wins don't, why continue playing those games?

For what it's worth, at least anecdotally the selection committee often seems to think the same way. Wins against scholarship programs don't help and losses can hurt (though they don't always).

A number of us on this page have been calling for an end to this tournament for several years now. I have less of an issue with it now that Hope has (significantly) improved its non-conference schedule in recent years and the "regional" definition has expanded to 500 miles from 200, but would still rather see an MIAA/OAC tourney instead (as an example).

I'm not sure how much pull the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame has in determining how the 'classic' is formatted but I assume that's not a small fundraiser for them and something that helps their budget greatly.

I would, however like them to consider a revamp of the format.    Cornerstone and AQ already play a  WHAC/Crossroads type challenge.  They could incorporate that into the weekend and have Hope/Calvin play one or two D3 schools, play it at two of our fine gymnasiums/arenas now.  Good fun for everyone.

Something like this

Hope vs Augustana
Calvin vs Marietta
Indiana Wesleyan vs Cornerstone
Aquinas vs Marian

Hope vs Indiana Wesleyan
Calvin vs Aquinas
Augustana vs Marietta
Cornerstone vs Marian

or even just 6 teams

Hope vs Augustana
Calvin vs Cornerstone
Aquinas vs Marian

Calvin vs Augustana
Hope vs Aquinas
Cornerstone vs Marian.

Not sure Amherst looks at its results as gaudy.

Can't remember if this was brought up on the board.  The MIAA will be using media timeouts in all of its conference games this year.  I believe the final number they agreed on was 3 per half.

Hope used them in all of its non-conference games.

Pat Coleman

That's a growing trend, even in conferences that have less commercial radio than the MIAA. Since the NCAA Tournament went to 16-12-8-4 media timeouts in all games, more conferences have added them for regular season play in order to better prepare teams for the postseason.

When Ferris State thumped Calvin by 34 in November I judged the Bulldogs to be a far better team than their predicted 6th place finish in the GLIAC had them pegged. Don't look now but Andy Bronkema's boys are now rated 6th overall in D2 by Massey, having won 10 straight regular season contests. That doesn't even include Ferris's stunning 14 point win over Bowling Green at Bowling Green just before Christmas. While that game counts on Bowling Green's record as a regular season game it's was labeled an exhibition game on the Ferris schedule. Given how badly some of Ferris's opponents have been beaten (conference opponent Ohio Domincan lost to Ferris by a mind-boggling 69 points), that two point loss Albion suffered in late November is looking very good for the Brits.

I believe that Coach Mitchell said at the luncheon on Monday that the final, settled-on arrangement would be at 14 and 7 (so just two instead of 3 per half).  I could have mis-heard that though.  Lots of chatter in the room.
