Can't remember if this was brought up on the board.  The MIAA will be using media timeouts in all of its conference games this year.  I believe the final number they agreed on was 3 per half.

Hope used them in all of its non-conference games.

I believe that Coach Mitchell said at the luncheon on Monday that the final, settled-on arrangement would be at 14 and 7 (so just two instead of 3 per half).  I could have mis-heard that though.  Lots of chatter in the room.

Yes, this is correct.  It will be 2 per half at 14 and 7.  There are some other rules I believe that if a full timeout is called near the media timeout it will wipe out the media timeout.  I could be wrong on that part though.  I also believe each team will be given 5 timeouts instead of 6 as well.

A thought on tonight:

Trine creates turnovers at a rate very similar to PSU-Behrend, Hope's turnover rate is 2nd highest in the league.  Very key part of tonight's game for me.   Also a contrast in speed, Hope like it closer to 70 possessions, Trine 60.  If its a slower paced game turnovers are amplified.

Also I have a twitter link below, going to try in game stuff but 1) I'm usually too engaged to care about my phone during play  2)  I may think like an 18 year old but I type on my phone like I'm 80.

There are different rules depending on the number of media's they have per half.  If the number is under 3, which it sound like it is, then they have their usual 6 time-outs.  Whenever a team calls a full time-out in either half, it ends up taking the place of the upcoming media time-out.  Also, the first time-out in the second half - full or 30 - ends up being the full media length.  What all that means is you are not always looking at a bunch of extra time-outs, depending on when teams might call them.  There is some strategy involved and a little learning curve, so it was a good idea for teams to use them in their non-conference games as well.

Where it gets really interesting if when you have 3 or more.  Then you only get one full and four 30s, plus you lose one of the 30s if you don't use it in the first half.  The last 8 minute of those game feel like a football game, with the teams huddling up after every play.

Was at the Ohio Northern vs Rochester, NY game yesterday afternoon.  Took over 2 1/2 hours to play an overtime game.  Over 2 hours for regulation time.  Games will be extended longer than you think!

How hard is it to know what Sam is going to do against Calvin? I mean, really? Weak side skip pass for the three, weak side skip pass for the three, drive and dish for the three, weak side skip pass for the three.....unreal.

C. Denney the new 6' 7" guy goes 5 for 5, 2 for 2 on 3's for 12 points for Calvin.  His addition as a so. transfer is looking really good.
5 Calvin guys in double figures so scoring isn't the problem, but defense needs some work.

Yeah; I'm afraid defensive deficiencies will be Calvin's downfall this year. The Knights have several capable scorers in addition to the magnificent Jordan Brink but you still have to stop someone and the Knights don't do that with any regularity. Of course that's Alma's problem too which is why they will lose more conference games than they will win. But the Scots are so creative and capable on the offensive end that they will always be a threat to beat the better teams in the conference--and I expect will do so a couple of times this season.

After taking an early 29-14 lead it looked like Calvin would make quick work of the visitors but you gotta hand it to Sammy Hargraves and his feisty team, they aren't intimidated and they don't quit. Alma got the deficit down to one point with less than two minutes to play before free throws and a huge put back by Tyler Dykstra kept Alma at bay. Calvin outrebounded Alma comfortably and overall outshot them from the floor except--as often seems to be the case--from the three point line where Alma shot 12-26. Alma was led by the two Beckmans who scored 22 and 18, but the biggest surprise for me was the freshman from Mason HS, Doug Bradfield, who scored 16 before fouling out. The kid is a nice find for Sam.

Calvin was led, as usual by Jordan Brink, with 20, but he caused the already nearly comatose VNA "crowd" to faint when he missed the first MIAA competition free throw he took in his senior year. A federal investigation is being contemplated. Pretty good balance after that with 14 each from Dykstra and Daley, 13 from frosh VanderBrug and 12 from newcomer Cameron Denny. As realist correctly notes, Denny looks to be a very solid transfer and he surprised me. He helps Calvin immediately but clearly isn't the listed 6'7" program height. He appears to be 6'5" but that's fine with me because the kid really has skills. In addition to knowing how to shoot the ball, he's quick, appears to be a hardnosed defender and rebounder, and looks to be a terrific interior passer. Once his teammates realize that new guy will find a way to get them the ball when they don't think they're open you will see a lot of assists on the Denny resume. Even though he lacks the two inches the program gives him he should soon (as the ever farsighted and perceptive knightvision noted to me in an aside at the game) be given charge of the Calvin weightlifting program. Cameron's upper body is impressive.

Trine beats Hope 65-62. Must win for the Flying Dutchmen at DeVos on Saturday.

He was really good tonight, 8-16 from the floor and not many of those were layups.  Difference in the game I thought.

sac

A couple thoughts.

--league play is so much more intense than non-conference play.  Hope didn't seem to get off the bus well and struggled to pick up their own intensity on both ends of the floor.  Trine played the same way almost throughout and forced Hope to play from behind.

--Brock Benson had to sit for most of the first half with two pretty tough calls early in the game.   I'm pretty sure the score is in Hope's favor when he's out there.

--Late game execution was the difference.  In a tie game Trine made 2 FT's, Hope's missed two on the following possession, gave the advantage to Trine who made 1 of 2 the next trip.  Tyler Good also had an earlier 3, while Hope missed their same opportunity.

--Defensive matchups were interesting.  Trine sacrificed a little inside defense by playing Tyler Good on Ben Gardner.  Late in the game they had 6-1 Dustin Hall playing post defense.  Worked out in the end, but it seemed like a gamble.  Good might be the most underrated player in this league.  By the same token I thought Hope really limited Dixon's ability to get to the rim, I can't recall more than 1 or 2 times.  So different from the Trine I saw at the end of last year, movement and execution and team play was a lot better.

--missed opportunity for a big road win for Hope.  Little things, early game rebounds, turnovers and missed ft's.

--League is going to be tough for anyone to win if Trine plays that well the rest of the way.  Four really even teams in Hope, Calvin, Albion and Trine.

---I sat behind Hope's bench, if you get the chance try it just to listen in on Coach Mitchell interacting with his team, you'll be impressed.

The Delta State team picture -- where Denney played first semester -- provides a very handy brick-grid background if you want to measure pixels and compare listed heights.

http://www.gostatesmen.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball&

He's clearly taller than #3 and #32, both listed at 6-5, but maybe not quite as tall as #5 who's listed at 6-7.

Now whether or not any basketball roster height can be trusted is another matter altogether.
