Food donation day around the league.

Food Drives To Be Held In Conjunction With MIAA Basketball Games

Student-athletes at several MIAA colleges are conducting food drives in conjunction with basketball games to be held on their campuses.

At Kalamazoo, the men's basketball team will host a food drive Saturday to support the mission of Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes during its home game against Olivet. Free admittance will be offered to anyone that brings a canned or boxed good to the 3 p.m. game at Anderson Athletic Center.

Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes was organized in 1982 to feed hungry people and engage the Kalamazoo community in the fight to end hunger by providing high quality food, developing high quality client access and support, and nurturing their volunteer base.

Meanwhile, student-athletes at Hope and Calvin have set a goal of collecting 10,000 food items to be donated to Community Action House, a nonprofit agency in Holland, during The Rivalry Series.

Items will be collected at the door during Saturday's men's basketball game at DeVos Fiedlhouse between the Flying Dutchmen and Knights, and the Jan. 17 women's game between Hope and Calvin. Donors are asked to consider donating healthy non-perishable food items.

Question about TV timeouts if anyone knows.  Are Hope/Calvin using the traditional TV stoppages at 16, 12 and 8 because the game is actually being televised or are we using the league's 2?

a helpful message sent to me about timeouts in Holland today

MIAA Media Timeout Policy
At the December 8, 2014 BOC meeting, the MIAA has adopted a media timeout policy for MIAA basketball games
Notes:
A.   This policy is effective Jan. 1, 2015, for men's basketball and Jan. 24, 2015 for women's basketball.
B.   If the game is being broadcast on live TV. The NCAA Division III tournament media timeout policy should be used.
C.   This policy will be reviewed by both the men and women's basketball coaching committees at the end of the season and will have to be approved by the BOC for use beyond this season.

So 16, 12, 8 and 4 today.

If you are heading to Kzoo today or you need to take I-94 between Battle Creek and Kzoo to get to where you are going, check for an alternate route.  As of this morning I-94 was still closed in both directions from yesterday's accident.

Side streets and state routes around the accident have "been a nightmare".

It appears I-94 will remain closed all day and probably won't reopen until Sunday. Untangling 193 cars and trucks is no small task but the big problem right now is how to deal with the overturned tanker filled with hazardous materials. They need to find a way to safely offload liquid acid with a low spark rate so you know they're not in a hurry right now. Check out this video of vehicle after vehicle crashing into each other yesterday. Yikes!

Two years ago I was at the backend of a similar but much smaller crash situation that closed I-94 at precisely the same location as yesterday's accident, and in similar weather conditions. It's frequently an awful spot for driving when the weather turns ugly. It was pretty scary and I didn't even suffer any damage to my car.

At the half, the announcers said something like Calvin leads the half by 8 points, surprisingly, I thought that was weird.

There isn't any reason to even hold a vote for league MVP this year, is there?

I thought he was referring to the fact that Calvin had been down by 9.

Calvin wins by 24.  Announcers can't believe hope lost to Trine this week and think KVS should be thrilled with this win.  I'm kind of thinking that maybe Hope isn't that good.  Thoughts....

Clearly the story:

Hope stuck with Wooster and beat Ohio Wesleyan convincingly. Those are booth good teams. Hope was Massey #20 coming into today. They're not bad.
