Ya, as good as Caleb is. He seems to have trouble with the press, as well. It was more effective with Smith in as you could see.

IIFC, Smith made a couple terrible passes out of the press as well.  Overall, Veldhouse handled it alright.  What I didn't like seeing from him were the passes to open space where no one was while he was driving to that basket\.  That happened at least two times.

Shareef, the question begs to be asked... did you even SEE Steven Cramer play tonight?
Quote

I think Cramer is a VERY dangerous player, who can create a lot of offense in traffic.  Between him and Immink, I began to wonder if they took routine layups or only the circus variety.

Two things hurt this Calvin team that out hustled, out rebounded, and mostly outplayed Hope for much of the game: 1) Sloppy ball handling by our guards, especially in the later part of the 1st half leading to way too many easy breakaways and 2) inconsistent and questionable calls.  Perhaps Veldhouse should have hit Draayer trailing on the 2 on 1 to tie the game, but no one will ever convince me that the right call was a charge.  A no call?  Ok.  A block (since he certainly didn't look set to me)?  I'll take my chances on the line.  But a charge??????????   A classic case of the refs controlling the outcome in a tight game, and its just a shame.  I'm done whinning now.

I watched WXMI's newscast.  That play wasn't shown.  Maybe the other stations will have it.  I'd like to see it again to make sure what I saw was what I saw.

Shareef........the important thing is it didn't go in.  ;D

General question.........was the foul on Caleb a charge or pushing off with the elbow?

doc......I found that comment strange too....I thought Calvin did a great job on Cramer.   He got rejected 3 times in one half.  He didn't seem to have his outside shot tonight.

Actually, Draayer was ahead of Veldhouse for most of the play. And then Caleb stop and pivoted. And then was called with a offensive foul.

Both Veldhouse and Dustin Smith made mistakes in ball handling that were costly. Hey, they're human. It was an extremely competitive game with a lot on the line, they're still only freshmen and let's face it, Hope plays outstanding individual and team defense. It's not like the Knight guards have an easy task against a talented and veteran Hope team. Split second decisions against good teams can often make you look like are a bad player when you really are not. From the comfort of your cushioned chair it looks a lot easier than is, believe me. Give 'em a break, it was a very exciting game worthy of a Final Four contest and I felt privileged to watch it up close--third row actually. Let's be thankful for players who play their hearts out and represent their schools better than we do.

Thanks for reminding me Sac. The ref signaled charge on the offensive fould, which makes it even a worse call in my opinion. I don't see how you can charge when you have stopped and are pivoting. I guess it's possible but a strange call in that situation.

That was one whale of a game!!

Couple of thoughts/questions

- The last shot - looked to me like it hit the side of the backboard.  And was the shooter really Veldhouse?  My son swears it was Zoerhof - which makes more sense to me since Caleb was the free throw shooter.

- The officiating - I agree that it seemed to be a very incosistant thing - the players on both sides struggled to understand what a foul was.

- THE FOUL - From the motion made by the official, he did not appear to be calling a charge, I think he was calling a forearm push-off.  From my vantage point, that was what happened.  Tough call for the official to make, since Caleb had gotten away with the same thing through-out the game.

- The Knight Club - nice to see KVS walk over during an inappropriate pre-game cheer  - say something to the club - and the cheer instantly changed to Let's Go Knights.  Much appreciated - the original cheer was out of line and un-necessary.  I thought that the KC did a great job of helping to keep their team in the game, and out did the DC several times.

- Sorry to see Draayer and Trewhella end their careers - two great players.

On to the sweet 16 - and it is sweet!!!!

I also haven't seen as many episodes of epistaxis during a game as was seen tonight--with both Bear and Meckes bleeding--on fouls called on them!  Can't be fun mouthbreathing with a couple of nasal tampons crammed in your nostrils and trying to run up and down the court.

From where he was, and with three guys on him.  There was NO way the ball would go in.  I was more surprised that he was able to get the rebound.  I expected the ref standing there to call him out of bounds.  From where I was standing, it looked as if he was.

Charging.  The "ref" made the charging signal.

Immick killed Calvin though.  At the end of the first half I leaned over and told my wife that Calvin better not give Immick any room because he was going to take a shot at a three pointer.  Just before the shot was taken and made.  There's a difference maker too.

oldknight, I wasn't ripping on them. I just said the press hurt us. Not trying to single them out. They play exactly how I thought they would against the press. I was giving GVW credit for going to it.

anyone else think that veldhouse should have passed off to draayer?  it was calvin's chance to get the game.

The play that Bear bloodied his nose on was a good call.  Hate to say that, but it was.

I think talking about what Veldhouse should have done is a stupid arguement. I trust his choice. I mean if they call it a block no one ever mentions if he should have past. It's just not really relavent. If he passes it and Draayer misses we'd asked why he didn't keep it.  Pointless
