Down in Florida

Beloit 57 Messiah 56

Messiah hit a 3 in the final ticks to pull within one.  First half of this thing opened with a 10-2 Beloit run, followed by a 21-4 Messiah run, followed by a 10-1 Beloit run to finish the half tied at 24.

Hope will play Messiah tomorrow night.

Trying to make sense of this box score. Wow. Some key names missing, I don't even recognize some of the names and the spread of minutes is bewildering.

EDIT:  Apparently Calvin raided UW-Stout's roster.

Hmmm . . . has Calvin v. Whitworth actually played yet, Old Knight . . . or just putting new names into the box of the prev game?

Yeah, the game just started. It's 11-7 Whitworth with 16:00 minutes left in the first half. Not sure what that is.

You can watch the game here.

Thanks. That makes me feel better.

73-56 was the final score of Pacific Lutheran/UW-Stout. There was a snafu on posting the final box to the wrong game. The minutes are bewildering because Stout uses 15 guys in the first 8 minutes by design (yes really) and the teams combined to play 36 guys.

Calvin trailing second ranked and undefeated Whitworth 32-28 at the break after trailing by 9 early and 11 late. The Knights seem fortunate to have the game that close as they had a long stretch of poor play and empty possessions. They look a lot like a team that just got off the plane from 3 time zones away, but Whitworth looked out of sync for parts of the first half too. No live stats up to look at. No Calvin player to herald other than Welch who seemed to have a nice opening 20 minutes.

Pat mentions Calvin 1-9 from the arc while Whitworth 4-10 the first half.

Hope with the 82-56 win over Messiah.  Hope came out looking sluggish like a team in a strange place that hadn't played in awhile. Messiah came out on fire after a poor shooting night versus Beloit last night. Looked up ad 7 minutes in Hope was down 19-8. Hope slowly came around on both ends of the floor and by halftime it was Hope leading 31-30.

The second half was completely dominated by the Dutchmen on both ends of the floor. The threes started falling and 3 monster dunks by Brock Benson and the rout was on.

Benson with 19 and 8, Gardner with 14 and 6, and Blackledge with 16 and 2 off the bench.

On to tomorrow (actually today as I look at the clock) and Beloit.

Whitworth seems to have some very nice size along with an excellent transition game. Can see why they're ranked no. 2.

D3hoops front page shows Calvin lost the 6pm game to Whitworth 73-56, but they're currently leading the 11pm game 52-51 with 9 minutes left

Too much size and Kenny Love. Whitworth pulling away leading 62-53 with under 5 minutes.

Too many unforced errors by Calvin but still a pretty good effort against an excellent Whitworth quintet who beat the Knights 68-65. Cam Denney missed a game tying three at the buzzer.

Good job by Dave and Pat. I won't fault them for not knowing that the hitch in Denney's shot is standard for him.

Was an exciting game! Knowing nothing of the two teams, you'd never expect Calvin's record to be what it is. I enjoyed the broadcast.

With 10 non-conference games remaining the league is 40-38 overall and 23-29 vs D3.  Everyone not named Kalamazoo or Olivet is a very respectable 23-16 vs D3.

2005    46-38    0.548
2006    52-34    0.605
2007    27-51    0.346
2008    34-44    0.386
2009    35-46    0.432
2010    38-50    0.432
2011    43-43    0.500
2012    44-43    0.506
2013    48-39    0.552
2014    39-49    0.443
2015    39-49    0.443
2016        40-38       0.512  w/10 to play

I don't think we'll reach the 48 wins of 2013 but I'm really starting to lean towards the league being as good as its been in the last decade.

If you're thinking about SOS calculations down the line the MIAA will have six teams that will have at least a .500 record vs D3 which is absolutely huge.  Don't get too excited though because Kalamazoo and Olivet are about to throw a combined 0-14 record vs D3 into the mix which will kill what should have been an excellent SOS league play factor.

A couple big games today:

Albion vs North Park:   a rare in season non-conference rematch.  Albion lost the first game at North Park,  an Albion win would make them 6-4 vs D3

Calvin vs St. Vincent:  I rate this as the most important non-conference game remaining due to its potential impact on regional rankings.  It would be super nice to have a league team with a win over St. Vincent.   St. Vincent is a pretty heavy favorite to blow through the PAC and they'll have a really good overall record with at least a decent SOS calculation with a couple decent wins on their resume.  A Calvin win would go a long way here in helping any other MIAA team stay ranked ahead of them, including Calvin themselves if it should come to that.

Alma at St. Norbert:   Alma could use a good signature non-conference win and this would be a really good one to have.  St. Norbert is probably going to win the MWC and has just one loss to Stevens Point and won't have many more than that.

Trine vs Manchester:   For some reason this game is in doubt of being played today.  Decision at noon I guess.

Beloit vs Hope:   Goal for the day, have the lead with 10 min. remaining in the first half.   Beloit reminds me a little of Hanover in the way a team I know nothing about can remind me of a team I've seen once.
