Shooting woes continue.  Calvin out rebounding Kazoo 22-10 but can only shoot 25%.

0-13 from the arc the first half. Calvin has now made 4 of their last 46 three point shots. That's really hard to do. Daley started but seems to be in a fog, going 0-1 from the floor and I think he's made all 4 Calvin turnovers.

Kalamazoo beats Calvin 68-53. If you said the Knights wouldn't go 4-33 from three point land again you would be right. The Knights went 2-24 from the arc and 28% overall. That's really all you need to know about the game.

Anyone picking Calvin next Saturday?

Well it may be time for the Knights to play the spoiler.  The Knights looked to be pretty demoralized today, and getting it together to smack the Dutch would be a herculean effort.   However, it is essentially the same team that played #5 Whitworth tough in Vegas.

It should be an exciting week coming up for Calvin fans as the Knights face off against Adrian and Hope.  Based on Calvin's recent shooting woes, the law of averages indicates they will be blistering the nets at a record setting 81.27% clip in those two games.  ;)

Hope 94  Adrian 71

The first half Hope  built a nice double-digit lead they carried into halftime  42-26.  Hope held Christian Covile to just a pair of FG's and 5 points on 2-8 shooting.  Sam Otto for Hope had a nice first half, went 5-8 with 13 points.  The difference between this game and the one at Adrian was that once Hope got that double-digit lead this time they expanded on it and put the game out of reach.

All of the intensity of the first half fizzled pretty quickly in the second half once Hope pushed the lead over 20.  Christian Covile just started doing his thing and went 8-14 in the half for 20 points, Hope really attacked the rim and Adrian was pretty powerless to stop it as Hope shot over 65% in the 2nd half and the Bulldogs showed their fatigue on defense with several fouls around the basket.  Not much else to say really

Nice night honoring Hope's 5 Sr's and a really special thank you to Mark White for bringing his Adrian team out for the pre-game ceremony and the respectful way they applauded each Sr.  and also to Hope College for recognizing Adrian's Jordan Denham who spent 2 1/2 years at Hope.  Really a pretty cool beginning to the game.

Mark White's been at Adrian 7 years now, his teams have only given up 80 points 8 times in 181 games, 94 is the second most points anyone has ever scored against one of his teams.
2015-----Mt. Union 96  Adrian 68
2016-----Hope 94  Adrian 71
2014-----Alma 90  Adrian 80
2014-----Olivet 88 Adrian 81OT
2016-----Alma 85  Adrian 66
2014-----Hope 82  Adrian 56
2016-----Elmhurst 82  Adrian 50
2013-----Hope 81  Adrian 72----2013

To the eye I still like this Adrian team as the #4 or even #3 team in the MIAA, but those 3 close home losses really hurt their chances at a better MIAA record.

+1 for road win, -1 for home loss
Alma      11-1     +4
Hope     11-1     +4
Albion    8-4     +2
Trine      5-7     -1
Adrian   5-7      -1
Calvin    4-8     -1
Olivet     2-10    -3
Kzoo      2-10    -4

Home teams are 31-17  (9 of those losses belong to Kzoo, Olivet)

Remaining games:

Hope:      @Kzoo, @Calvin
Alma:       @Albion, @Olivet
------------------------
Albion:     Alma, @Trine
------------------------
Trine:       @Olivet, Albion
Adrian:    @Calvin, Kzoo
Calvin:     Adrian, Hope
------------------------
Olivet:      Trine, Alma
Kzoo:       Hope, @Adrian

Alma/Hope---Neither blinked yesterday, both have clinched either the #1 or #2 seed in the MIAA tournament, Hope currently holds that tie-breaker

------Albion has clinched the #3 seed in the MIAA tournament

-----Trine/Adrian in the same boat only Trine has a better life preserver in the tie-breakers.   Winning at Calvin would be a very big win for Adrian on Wed.

-----Calvin needs to win Wed. to remain alive for a tournament spot, but can only tie and hope for play-in game.  A loss Wed would eliminate them from the MIAA tournament

Last week of league play, and Hope has two guys on the verge of reaching the 1000 point milestone.  Alex Eidson is at 983, while Brock Benson is at 970.  Seems like two good games from each of them this week, and they could get there.  If not, I suspect they will both reach 1000 during MIAA tournament play.  Should they get there, they will join Ben Gardner (currently at 1217) from this years senior class at Hope.

Got me wondering if anyone can remember a single class at an MIAA school with 3 1000 point scorers?

I did a quick check through Calvin's archive of 1,000+ point players.

I found 3 sets of two in the same class:
90  Sall 2,063  Timmer 1,097  ( Davis 89 1,121 *)

04 Prins 1,355 Broene 1,043  (J. Veenstra 03 1,947)

10 Mantel 1,263  Veltema 1,043  (Veldhouse 09 1,627)

* Davis 1,121 and Aultman 05 1,005 made their 1,000+ in two years.

I found it interesting that each pair followed another member of the 1,000+ club.

Hope has had 7 sets of 2:

'60 Warren VanderHill 1575 & Ray Ritsema 1510
'72 Dan Shinabarger 1841 & Marty Snoap 1003
'88 Matt Strong 1027 & Jim Klunder 1019
'92 Wade Gugino 1649 & Colly Carlson 1189
'03 Don Overbeek 1259 & Chad Carlson 1034
'06 Andy Phillips 1200 & Greg Immink 1113
'12 David Krombeen 1167 & Peter Bunn 1154

Updated (cause I missed the guys in 1960).  Amazing that this has happened in every decade I've been alive

HOPEful

Remaining games:

Trine:       @Olivet, Albion
Adrian:    @calvin, Kzoo
calvin:     Adrian, Hope

If calvin suddenly starts making baskets and the schedule pans out with the bold games being wins, and the non-bold games being losses... all three teams would end the regular season tied and with the same head-to-head record. What would the next tie-breaker be?

If it goes to record against the 1 seed, then the 2 seed, down...

calvin would first get the nod, having beaten Hope the final game of the regular season

Would they still have a play in game? Would Trine and Adrian just need to flip a coin? Would Trine and Adrian play a play in game on Monday for the right to play a play in game on Tuesday or Wednesday against calvin?

The three teams would have their records against each other stacked.

The team on the lowest end of the tie-breaker would drop out and the last 2 would play a play-in game....since they would have all split against each other in the regular season.

Anyone picking Calvin next Saturday?

No, which is why it may set up well for Calvin on that day. Hope has too much to play for to let down, though. They don't want the tournament at Alma.
