According to a Steve Bell tweet:

"WOTS Chris Coles out as head coach at Olivet College"

Coles has been removed from Olivet's website.

As long as Olivet's players continue to do knucklehead things off the court and in the classroom, the next coach will be paddling up stream as well.  I would guess Steve Ernst is going to be named the interim coach and probably hired at some point this Fall or Winter.  I'm not sure what Steve's longest tenure coaching anywhere is but it isn't long.  Two stints as GVSU assistant, head coach at Grand Rapids Central, Pentwater, Cheboygan, Summit Christian Academy, Lansing Christian and Charlotte.

Ernst is going to inherit a program that just had the worst season of any MIAA team in the last decade measured by efficiency.

On and off over the years a few times posters have discussed how it would be cool to get some of the best teams around the Great Lakes and country to play in a weekend tournament.  Ryan Whitnable who does the This Week in Great Lakes Basketball Podcast has been working on such a thing for awhile.  Today he, along with Marietta announced the first Great Lakes Invitational starting in 2017.

Thanks, Sac . . . looks like a great tournament. Have you any idea how eight teams play a "tournament" in two days?  Perhaps two four-team brackets and two winners?

The tournament wording probably will confuse some. It wasn't meant to have it but here we are. The format will have a Great Lakes team (Hope) play against an in-region team one night and a game outside of the region the other ( in theory, Hope could play Wittenberg Friday night, and then play St. Thomas Saturday night).

Kevin Vande Streek has been replaced as the head coach of the Calvin Knights' softball team.

I know Kevin is very disappointed with this news... ha!

Austin Bykerk, who played his freshmen year at Dordt last season, said to be enrolling at Calvin this fall. The 6'7" Hudsonville Unity Christian grad is athletic, long, possesses good handles, some scoring pop, and has excellent hops (38 inch vertical). I saw him play several high school games and can't remember him not getting at least one dunk each game. He played quite a bit as a first year player for the Defenders, averaging 16.5 minutes, 5.7 points (48.5% shooting), and 3.7 boards. Given the shortage of big guys with scoring ability on the Calvin campus, and the fact that he has one season of college ball under his belt, I think it's likely Austin has every opportunity to contribute to the Calvin program immediately. As always, how much depends on how well he adjusts to the demands on defense. His workout video is below:
