So the MIAA doesn't have a rule preventing a student-athlete who transfers from one member school to another from playing immediately? The CCIW has a rule that any student-athlete who transfers from one CCIW school to another has to sit out a calendar year in the sport in which he participated at his previous school.
I can only think of 2 or 3 times this has ever come up in our league in basketball.

Many, many years ago a Hope JV player transferred at Christmas to Alma.  I view Beckman as the player to be named later.

Current D1 Basketball official, Jim Schipper, first attended Hope where I think he stayed one semester before transferring to Calvin and eventually becoming a conference MVP. Hope retaliated many years later by scooping up Ryan Klein from his Calvin dorm room just before classes began his freshmen year. :o

...and Hope's current AD Tim Schooveld attended and played at Calvin before eventually transferring to Hope.

Another name that came up was Dustin Smith, who played football at Hope before transferring to Calvin.

Many Division III conferences do not have a restriction or at least the coach will sign off on it. The very idea of restrictions is that coaches are poaching players from the competition and at higher divisions and conferences where there is more at stake and scholarships are in place, I understand the idea. However, in Division III where there are so many factors outside of sports in play as to why a student wants to transfer schools, the idea that there are no restrictions should be applauded. No point in hurting a student if they have other issues at play.

I agree. I've never liked the rule.

I would......

1.  Not expect to see Jason Beckman's name on Hope's roster

2.  but realize a lot can change between now and November.

Calvin has added two exhibition games to their schedule.

http://calvinknights.com/sports/mbkb/2016-17/schedule

Saturday November 5 away to Northwood (D2) and Saturday November 12 home to Lawrence Tech (NAIA).

Northwood will be coming off an exhibition game at Michigan State.

Hope has updated its athletics website:

Looks good to me, plus they have added a free mobile app.  Nice app that allows you to select notifications for specific sports you want to follow.

I think I'd tend to agree with SAC: I've been told (by some non-Hope people, no less) that the D1 opportunities he was hoping for didn't quite materialize (this year). And that he is enrolling @ Hope, but just biding his time, waiting to see what happens in the recruitment of younger brother, and possibly making it a combo deal somewhere? Or if a D1 (or D2?) opportunity comes along for the following year, well there he's already sat out the required 1 year and is able to play right away.

hmmm, pretty sure he has to sit out the one year at the D1 or D2 school.

I think the schools generally prefer that, but I think the only requirement is that you're a year away from your previous school.

If this younger brother is really D1/D2 caliber why wouldn't some D1/D2 coach have made nice with Jason to lure/entice  the one you really want to your school?  Recruiting a h.s. kid is a bit of a risk, and one with a tag along older brother (even as a preferred walk on) only increases that risk IMO.

I feel like you kind of answered your own question. Isn't any risk minimized by having him use his sit out year somewhere else?

Does anyone really have solid information regarding whether Jason Beckman will be playing for Hope this year or is it all speculation? Also, is his brother a legit D1 player? HK

Jason is at Hope.  Whether he is playing basketball or not is what is unknown.

As far as his brother, I had heard that he was one of those types of kids who maybe thinks he belongs higher than where he will end up.  Wouldn't surprise me to see him on a D3 or an NAIA roster.  If he were really a D1 talent he would certainly be more well known at this point, right?

It's also to note that his brother is only 5-9.
