I hope that you keep an EpiPen handy every time that you sip that maroon Kool-Aid, sac, because your Calvin allergy is setting you up for one heck of an anaphylactic shock.

With Mylan going greed central, who can afford an EpiPen? :o

(Fortunately I have great insurance, since I have a bee allergy and HAVE gone into anaphylactic shock.)

I went to the calvin/northwood game Saturday.  Calvin played everybody in the 1st half and after the 1st 5 mins they were up 7 and in control of the game.  The subs came in and played solid, northwood kept their regular rotation as if it was a regular game.  Positives,  the bigs looked good and had great chances 2 finish but the ball didn't go in, Bykerk will have a immediate impact,  the freshman was just nervous.  Canonie held their pg to 0-6 fg, 4 turnovers and 1 pt.   He looked to get people involved.  Calvins depth is good. Negatives, Have to block out better and finish at the rim.  The guards are going to have to find a way to shoot and  score.  I am going Saturday to take another look at them.   Just by comparison, kcollege 12pts in 1st half and alma getting blown out at lssu would be more alarming to me than a 3 pt loss.

Yes, but it's so obvious that he was drinking alone when he should have been drinking with former players.

Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinkin' alone

If Calvin hits the .500 mark this season that will be a huge victory. This might be the least talented Calvin team in awhile especially since Vanderbrug didn't come back. Graduating the likes of Daley is going to hard to replace especially considering the guards dont score well. I'm gunna say the Knights end up in the neighborhood of 11 wins. But KS and Sac will keep drinking the koolaid that .500 and below is acceptable while Hope is scheduling schools like IU to play against for exhibitions. And we wonder why we're falling behind in hoops. At least volleyball can get crowds into Van Noord because basketball won't be doing it for awhile.

I guess my biggest question is: what does it benefit a Division 3 team to play a Division 1 program? Even a mid-major like IPFW. Last year it didn't seem to help Hope to much in the long run to get drubbed by an Oakland ballclub, granted that Oakland team set a school record for wins, but they're a mid-major nonetheless. I realize that the mindset is that a school can pull a Grand Valley beating MSU, an Appalachian State beating U of M, and other big upsets and thus give a program a jump start even if its only an exhibition game, but more times than not, it results in a team getting the mess beat out of them, and it being nothing than a glorified practice for the Division 1 program. I guess for me it just doesn't make any sense. For me, play a Division 2 program like a Ferris or a Grand Valley, a game that can actually be competitive and put your players in the right mindset rather than just attempting to keep from being embarrassed.

FYI you have 27 pages of posts. :)  I have 168 pages of posts, and Sac has 789 pages. ;D

For those curious... sometimes/most times the reason DIII playing a DI is beneficial because the program/athletic department gets a nice size check for their efforts. In Division III, that can go a LONG way.

That's all well and good but Ziggy still had to sift 20 pages back to 6 years ago to pull up that quote from k2d... Whether he knew what he was looking for or just decided to do some light reading, I'm impressed either way

Reminds me of the days when legendary Knight, Mark Veenstra, was patrolling the paint at the Knollcrest Fieldhouse. Barney Steen, the Calvin AD at the time, called up Notre Dame to offer a home-and-home with the Irish who, at the time, had John Shumate playing the post. Barney's counterpart declined a home-and-home but invited the Calvin team to the Athletic and Convocation Center, adding the words "We'll give you a good guarantee if you come to South Bend." That set off Barney who roared back "We'll give you a better one if you come to Grand Rapids!" Alas, it never happened.

I thought a Matt Trewhella video was posted last Spring when he committed to Calvin, but here it is either again or the first time.  http://www.hudl.com/video/3/3509795/5721dc44b019261f80e04ce1

Out of the dozen+ videos I watched of MIAA kids, I thought his was right up there near the top.  I also read a couple articles I can't find now about how he had improved from Jr to Sr year and over the course of the year.   Looks legit to me, but that might be the koolaid talking.

I had not previously seen this video.  I was really impressed even though I know the guys shown on videos never miss a shot.  What really impressed me was the variety of shots at different distances, some off drives, and some just a matter of squaring up on a defender, often closely guarded.  The left handed hook really topped it off.  Good height for a guard in our division, too.

GreatScot!?

Some sad news from the land of the Scots. Doug Bradfield will miss the season after getting his MRI results back and having serious knee damage. Praying for his recovery that he'll take this in stride and bounce back next year. On the bright side, Kevin Gamble is only out for the next few weeks with a knee injury also, there was some talk of him missing substantial time as well. Obviously this is going to hurt Alma's depth, but it will help to have one playing instead of them both out. Out of the top 8 rotation players from last year the Scots are down to 4 returning. If you look at the top 11 from last year that number is at 4 also. Will be interesting to see how the Scots respond to this, but I have only seen positive things from the new guys so far.

Ouch. That's a really bad break for him and the Scots. About the only thing I hate about competitive sports is the injuries. Sam Hargraves now has an enormous task ahead of him: How do you replace 47 of last season's 80 point per game, and who now fills the over 50% of last season's now missing minutes? The four departed players from last season were--in my estimation--the four best, most important ones on Alma's very excellent 2015-16 squad. Quite frankly, it's impossible for Alma to replace them, and while I think Hope is the conference favorite, Calvin is very much in the mix of teams for the second spot.
