My predictions for the game with Andrews

- Hope breaks 100

- Every player has 10+ minutes

- We get to see at least 2 spectacular Cramer dunks

- GVW struggles to keep the margin below 40 but fails

I think the Hope JV team is going to play Andrews later this year. This game is a joke. Why it is on the Hope schedule, only one man knows for sure. My guess is that GVW wanted a sure win for his team before heading into VanAndel.
Don't get caught watching the paint dry.

I'll start at the ending

Hope 103 Andrews 46

This one was close for as long as both teams warmed up.....

Andrews is just badly outmanned against any D3 team, tallest man 6-3, only a couple really capable players.

I'll spare the details except to say it was 24-3 early, 56-20 at the half and 72=24 early in the second.

Evan Hare and Jim Partridge played very solid games in the liimited action they saw and fun to see Tyler Wolfe drain that 3 ball he's famous for.

If there's anything I came away impressed with its that Hope seemed very focused on running their offense and not just running up and down the floor blowing this team off the floor.  Which they could have done.

Not much more to say, and I'm sure the other 2900+ who showed up would agree with me.

...on to Van Andel

Sounds like FDF is the prognosticator of the day -- especially if Cramer jammed a couple in during his 10 or so minutes.

Over at Calvin, the young Knights had a reality check with very likely the quickest and most athletic team they'll face all year.

Calvin was holding its own for the first 17 minutes of the first half, even holding a 19-12 lead early in the half when the officiating crew was calling the game closely.  But Ferris State ended the first half on a swarming three minute run.

The Knights never really got back in the game, although they continued to work hard and they made Ferris work hard, too.

It's hard to be pleased with a loss, even to a D2 team with as many tough athletes as FSU, but I'm guessing KVS thinks the boys probably grew up a little tonight and learned a few valuable lessons.

Draayer led the Knights with 17 and Trewhella added 14.  Both freshman guards, Veldhouse and Smith, had 7 each, and did a respectable job of defending Dennis Springs, the lightning-quick point guard for FSU.

Sorry, forgot to report the final score from Calvin:

Ferris 78
Calvin 64

goodknight - haven't seen the final stats, but I think I hit them all - except for the Cramer dunks.  He only had one on a putback - but that didn't count because the orginal shooter was fouled.  It was still pretty awesome.

As sac stated - not really much of a game.  It was interesting to see the various "lines" each play well and run the offense.  Unfortunate that this was little more than a partial practice for the Hope guys.

Most interesting note coming out of the Calvin-Ferris game:
This was the first time Ferris has defeated Calvin at the Calvin Fieldhouse.  It ends a 10-game home winning streak for the Knights against the Bulldogs extending back to the opening season at the Fieldhouse 40 -- that's right, FORTY !! -- years ago.

So what do you all think are the chances for a Calvin-Hope match-up Saturday?  I think Hope should be able to beat Aquinas, but what about Cornerstone for those of you who know stuff about them.  Does Calvin have a shot at beating them?

SAC--
"Jim" Partridge? At least that's a little better than WHTC's version of "Tom" Partridge a few times early on...

Had the transistor on while in the Devos stands tonight, switching between coverage of Hope/Calvin...Sounds like the Bulldogs gave them a real run of it tonight. I'm guessing that the quickness of Springs, et al. was too much to handle, especially with the lack of interior presence besides Meckes.

Are there any other Calvin faithful who were present that care to comment on Knighties' chances in the "Beltline Brawl" this Friday???

I see Hope as being ready to give Aquinas a bit of revenge for the egg they laid at Aquinas last December. It's a good thing Glenn played the starters only a few minutes tonight.

I don't know if you caught the post game show on WHTC, but Coach Davelaar commented that "Tom" was actually a misprint given to the media by Hope.

goknights68:

I do think the Knights have a realistic shot at beating Cornerstone and then going on to play Hope for the championship on Saturday. Cornerstone is simply not the same team without Vorhees and Bronkema and Cornerstone does not play defense like Ferris (some would say they don't play defense at all but I won't go there). Veldhouse and Smith got a lesson last night in how quickly a turnover turns into a layup going the other way when you play a D2 team and don't pay attention 100% of the time. It was a good game for them to gain some experience while only suffering the pain of a nonconference loss to a better opponent.

If Calvin does play Hope Saturday I think that helps the Knights more than Hope. The Knights are greener than Hope and Calvin's players don't know each other that well yet and would benefit from playing another high quality D3 opponent early in the season.

SAC, i have witnessed the Hope brainfart against Aquinas over the past 10 years. It has been interesting. It's almost a given that Hope is going to lay an egg against the Saints annually. How many times has Hope beaten and lost to AQ in a two week span.

I watched Aquinas beat Hillsdale last week. They have very good guards and a solid post  game.  Im not giving this game to the Dutch

Kzoo is down at the Rhodes tourney in Memphis this weekend. Time to turn it around and get in the win column.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.
