On a separate, but related, topic...

I have been slightly disheartened by the conduct in recent years of the Hope and Calvin student sections. I am aware that I am a Hope fan, as as such am biased and so have not seen as much from the Hope students.

In recent years I have witnessed the Calvin students seemingly trying to emulate Big Ten and other D1 student sections. It has mostly coming the form of being borderline out-of-control. I recall a game at Calvin (last year I think) where the Calvin students rushed the court not just before the game was over, but while the game was actually in progress and not stopped for a timeout of because the clock seemed to strike zero. In that same game the Calvin students were being so overly rambunctious that they kept pushing the scoreboard that sits on the floor at half-court onto the court during the game because they were not just excited but jumping about wildly and pushing each other. I was also dismayed when the Calvin students taunted a Hope player with an apparent injury (turned out to be cramps).

I was also very disappointed in the Hope students a couple years ago when they flashed (wearing speedo's and not much else) a Calvin player while attempting to shoot a pair of free throws. And I was disgusted to learn that the Hope students at a game at Calvin taunted the parent (father if I recall correctly) of a Calvin player. I believe the player was injured  and the father was walking in front of the Hope Students. Absolutely despicable.

Just last week I was very disappointed to hear the Hope students yelling en mass "YOU SUCK!" at Calvin players. And I was very upset at Calvin students for chanting almost ten minutes after the game "There is no Hope!". Neither actions are supportive of their respective teams but are instead negative and taunting. I was raised with the ideals of sportsmanship and fair-play and always want this rivalry to be intense and spirited, but have no mean streaks or taunting or hard feelings once the final buzzer sounds. I truly hope(no pun intended) that Calvin fans support Hope outside of the rivalry as much as I support Calvin when they play, especially in the post season. After all, a M.I.A.A. win by any school is a win for all of us.

I understand this seems more critical of Calvin than of Hope, but please understand that I am a Hope fan and as such have probably subconsciously tuned out a fair bit of what the Hope students have done. I also sit behind the Hope students and facing the Calvin students at Van Noord Arena and on the same side as the Hope students and facing the Calvin students while at the DeVos.

Hope v. Oshkosh last night seemed much like last Saturday's Hope v. Calvin . . . Hope with double digit 2nd half lead facing a hot team making a comeback, terrific (season best?) 3-point shooting by the other team

The Titans shot exactly 50% from downtown last night (11-22), a mark that UWO has bettered four times this season.

Oshkosh also shot 55% all together from the floor. Darn hard to beat a team when they do that and Hope had just enough to do so. Chances are that Wash U. will not shoot as well tonight as Oshkosh dd last night.

I believe there are three keys to a Hope victory tonight.
1. Hope's defense guard play must be at it's best. While Wash U. has good guards, Hopes are our strength. We must play to it.
2. Hope must find a way to keep the rebound margin tight. Rebounding is the strength of Wash U. We must take it away.
3. The DeVos must be LOUD!  Hope averages four-times the average attendance that Wash U. does. We have to make that into an advantage.

Well, I'm a Calvin fan and I am just really happy that occasionally some Calvin students actually show up for a game or two.  I think their comments have always been quite civil but I think your post, in the words of the DewCrew, somewhat "sucks".

As a completely unbiased person here I would like to comment.

"There is no Hope" - Great chant/saying given the school's name, I would not take offense to this.
Going after parents - quite uncalled for, I do not condone.
Flashing during FT - That is pretty funny and if the outfit is legal/not classified under indecent exposure, I definitely allow.
"You suck!" - Not clever and not nice, but it could be worse I suppose.
Making fun of injuries - Do not condone, very bad.

To me it seems like the students probably had a drink or two before the big Hope-Calvin rivalry and were excited for their team/school.

The bolded statement I very much believe in though. I think everyone should put their in-conference rival aside when it comes to national championships. A win for a team in the conference displays to the entire d3 Nation how strong your conference is!

Wow. Just wow. I went out of my way to be as fair and unviased, did what I could to not be disparaging toward one school over the other, and this is the response? My opinion "sucks"? Wiz, you are a piece of work and I am honestlyoffended. No wonder I hardly ever comment on here.

Dutchfan

Smitty, I will simplify my previous comments. The behavior of the student sections has not been exemplary. It has been, in my opinion, increasingly poor sportsmanship and is NOT what I would expect from the student bodies of two Christian schools. As Christians I believe we shouldn't be taunting but supportive.

Man, Hope was goed bezig from long range in that first half. Dutch up, 52-37, at the break.

It should be a 30 point lead but yet again, Hope keeps giving up second chances--11 offensive boards in only 20 minutes. At least 3 times a second chance led to a successful shot from the arc. Other than that, Hope is completely in control but as HopeConvert reminds me, so was Ripon last night.

Gregory Sager

Well, yeah, but you've got to make those shots if you're given those second-chance opportunities. Kevin Kucera. who is only a 29% shooter from downtown this season, was 4-5 from beyond the arc in the first half. If not for his hot hand, the Bears would, indeed, be down by 30.

Hope beats Wash U, 94-80. Cody Stuive (37 points) and Dante Hawkins (26 points) went a combined 14-17 from downtown.

94-80 win by Hope over WashU. Stuive goes 10-11 from the arc and scores 37. That's all you need to know about the game. I'm guessing FDF will really enjoy that Twinburger and fries.

Dutchfan

Those 10 three-pointers by Stuive tied the Hope record for a single game set earlier this year by his team mate, Chad Carlson.

HOPEful

Based on my quick calculations, Hanover and Wartburg can't get to each other without a flight. Everyone can drive to Hope and Augustana.

Really good chance Hope hosts next weekend too, right?

I disagree.  I just don't understand this.  I am a Calvin fan and will never root for hope, no matter what.  I have always rooted for my team over my conference.  I love DIII hoops, I love the MIAA, I can't root for hope.  I don't ever want them to get a DIII Championship banner, honestly, how would this make a Calvin fan proud?

I'm very happy to pay off this bet. Very happy indeed.

It would be a cold-hearted person indeed who could not feel happy for Cody Stuive, who played the game of his life in what was likely his last game on his home floor. He had a dazed countenance at the end of the game, as if he himself could not believe what he had done. He also had a look of pure joy, which every Hope fan participated in vicariously. It ranks alongside Bowser's game against Augie and Cramer's game against Chicago as the finest tournament performances I have seen from a Hope player. It was a pleasure to watch.

I'll have to see if FDF likes ketchup and extra twin sauce.
