Well I'm having doubts that Hope will sell its full alotment of tickets for Friday.  I just walzed into DeVos and purchased another ticket for little brother.

I don't know how many they have left but there's still time if our interested.  The ticket window folks looked bored and were shocked when I appeared.  Plus I think there will be some at the door at Wittenberg.

DeVos empty, dark and quiet is just as impressive as Devos full, bright and loud.  8)

Since Calvin really only lost one close game I doubt that the majority of the 'the refs lost it for us' cries have been from Calvin fans.

Most of those cries came from us Hornet fans... :)

We have always gotten screwed, ever since the Haklin era. ;D

So the question of the day: do the memories of Haklin cause the refs to dislike Kzoo to this day? or does the lack of Tazmanian Devil-esque ranting toward the referees by post-Haklin coaches leave Kzoo at a disadvantage for negotiating with the refs?

I'm willing to lay off the Calvin fans for the discussion about the Veldhouse call, because in an end-game situation, a call which is one that is rarely made at any point in the game is going to be under scrutiny any time it is not obscenely obvious. I did occasionally think during the game that Calvin fans were ready to argue any call against them, but I myself was certainly curious to see if I could get confirmation that I had seen what I had seen (from my angle, it looked like a solid enough blow to call even in that scenario) on the offensive foul. I probably extended the discussion of the call in this forum by Calvin fans since I was interested in confirmingi the call myself. The amount of talk about that call and the out-of-bounds in The Game II were about equal and nothing that is different than what you'd expect from a tough call at the end of a tight game.

Don't take this the wrong way, guys, but this room does more whining about the officials than just about any room on Posting Up. It's unseemly, and in my view it drags down a bit what is otherwise a great room filled with knowledgable and enthusiastic fans. It seems as though every MIAA game comes with commentary in here that devotes about three times as much space to complaining about the refs as it does to actually discussing what the players did.

Refs are human. They aren't a part of some grand conspiracy to rip off Hope/Calvin/Albion/Kazoo/Whatever. Bad calls are as much a part of the game as face-painting, pom pons, and sneaker squeaks. And all of your griping isn't going to change that one bit.

I know that complaining about the refs gives fans of the losing team a certain amount of psychological release. It's a lot easier to scapegoat some guy in stripes who isn't affiliated with your team than it is to assign responsibility for the loss to your team's players, or coach, or to -- gasp! -- give credit to the hated rival that bested your team. But blaming the refs always struck me as a cheap escape valve for one's frustrations. It's much healthier and more mature, IMO, to look defeat square in the eye than to pawn it off on someone else. I yell at the refs as much as the next guy during a game, but when the final horn sounds I dwell upon what the players and coaches did or didn't do to determine the outcome of the game.

Some of you will no doubt zap my karma and/or write me off as an outsider who doesn't understand how bad the refs can be in the MIAA. That's fine. But I've seen plenty of bad refs in my day -- they don't all carry Michigan driver's licenses, you know. And if you want to continue to use the MIAA room as a sounding board for your interminable zebra safaris, nobody's going to stop you. I'm just saying that IMO it brings down the level of discourse in what is otherwise an excellent room.

GS:  If I could give you a karma point, I would (soon, I will be able to).  Every board does its share of complaining about the officials, but it seems like on this board, we've gone weeks where that's all that has been discussed.  I'm as much guilty of this as anyone else.  Some of the complaints have been warranted, but some have gone on and on without much reason.  I'm going to try to lay off the officiating complaints from now on, who knows if I'll succeed, but it's worth a shot. ;)

I think hornet fan was joking in a self mockery sort of way.

Good posts,  geez we've stooped to a level below Wooster whining.  :o ;D :D ;)

.......and before I get cruicified for that little comment, notice the several emoticons.  I'm teasing.

Is it Friday yet?

Greg:  you are wise!!!!!  Great post regarding officials!!

To those fans of Olivet...hope you aren't offended by the name....just a little joke between friends here where I work.....lots of MIAA people and Olivet is called Olivet CC here.

It's not looking like we are going to have a great showing for the dutchmen on Friday night in Ohio. As was mentioned in an earlier post....dance marathon is this weekend on campus and EVERYONE is involved....It really is an awesome thing that the college does every year to raise money for kids with cancer....It's 2 bad that they had it this weekend but that's what it is...I guess this means we won't have that many dew crew members there for the game which is a real shame...once again a sad point that the game isn't in Holland where it would be PACKED.
The news from the hope ticket office is that only 50 or so tickets for hope have been picked up so far....50??!!?!?!! The rest are being sent down to Witt so anyone can EASILY pick up tix the day of the game.
I'm sorry this puts a damper on the weekend for us Hope fans and for the whole sectional bc the number of people there won't be huge...either way, I'm still making the trip from NJ and I'm looking forward to a great time.
Any hope students know what's going on and any kind of a dew crew that can/will make the trip? THANKS!
And for those of you doing dance marathon... I'm glad you are sticking with your obligation and the donation of your time to that awesome cause.....

one game at a time...GO HOPE!!!

I find 50 hard to beleive since there were at least that many in line ahead of me.

Good posts,  geez we've stooped to a level below Wooster whining.  :o ;D :D ;)

The Wooster comment by Sac makes me think that perhaps the issue has to do with teams dominating particular boards. The complaint in the NCAC room is that it's often the "Wooster and Other Guys" board and the MIAA board certainly seems to sometimes turn into the "Hope, Calvin, and the two chicks in Destiny's Child you couldn't name" board. When fans of one team or one rivalry have the forum to themselves, it's easy to run with the topic of a bad call for a while because everyone is concerned with the same call. If the Wheaton fans were going nuts about a call in the CCIW board though, I'm sure there are enough other mixed fans to get sick of it and shut things down. That could explain how calls in Hope or Calvin games can create an avalanche of discussion

Now if only there was explanation for the vast anti-Kzoo conspiracy...  ;) And on another note, does this mean my dual Hope/tCOW allegiance gives me the title as whiniest poster in Posting Up?  :-\

And now for something completely different... someone must try to shift controversy before the ref issue takes over again: I realized the other day I don't recall a single post on the topic, but was the Calvin fan who tried to steal the 3-point (not) Mountain Dew bottle actually ejected from Saturday's game? The cop appeared like he was going to walk him all the way to the door. A bit harsh since no one expected he actually figured he could keep the sign or that he wasn't going to let the Dew Crew steal it back eventually. Does anyone know what was done with the guy? That incident certainly shows that Hope and Calvin fans were onto something this year; use the minors for your criminal hooliganism, it's harder to press charges later.  ;)

Holy crap, Dew Crew if you're out there, I'll volunteer the 3 un-used seats in my car tomorrow, you just have to help split up lodging. Post back if anyone who isn't yet going to the game hears me...

I think a big reason the tickets might be in large supply is the event Dance Marathon being held Friday-Saturday at Hope. A lot of the same people that get out and support the basketball team also get out and support the kids by participating in DM (myself being one of them).

Anyway, we'll all be there in spirit and over the airwaves nonetheless! We'll just be dancing while we listen :D
