Title IX doesn't often come up when the girls get the better draw.

So might this be Title XY?

The LSJ ran a whole series of articles about it this spring, I didn't find it very interesting or compelling reading.  Or very convincing either way.  Basically the girls finals is being moved to Grand Rapids due to a scheduling conflict with the Breslin Center (ie Michigan State wants the ability for their women to host first and second round NCAA games).

There were many mentions that something had to be similarly done with the boys finals and there were even articles written about this being the last year for the finals at the Breslin Center.  Most leaned towards either the finals moving to downtown Detroit and the new Pizza Pizza Center or the format and schedule being considerably altered and the finals possibly played at multiple locations.  The MHSAA has not released a format for the boys next year that I've seen but have obviously agreed on another year at the Breslin Center which I'm sure they would not do without feeling on solid legal footing regarding title IX.

MIAA COMMISSIONER'S CUP FINAL UPDATE

With nine Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships to its credit for this season, Calvin has won the 2016-17 MIAA Commissioner's Cup all-sports award. This is the first time that Calvin has won three-straight years.

The Knights won the award for the third straight year and for the fourth in the last five years and 12th time overall with 135 points, five points ahead of Hope. Calvin won the men's all-sports standings by a five-point margin over Hope and tied with Hope in the women's all-sports standings with 68 points.

This year Calvin won nine MIAA titles, with first-place finishes in men's cross country, men's soccer, volleyball, women's swimming & diving, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, women's lacrosse, men's outdoor track & field, and women's outdoor track & field. Although MIAA Tournament titles do not count in the standings, Calvin has three on the year in men's soccer, men's basketball and women's lacrosse.

The MIAA Commissioner's Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league's 22 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner's Cup standings are determined on the basis of each college's standings in eight of eleven sports for men and eight of eleven sports for women. The Commissioner's Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35.

Commissioner's Cup Final Standings: 1. Calvin 135, 2. Hope 130, T3. Trine 97, T3. Albion 97, 5. Alma 88.5, 6. Adrian 85.5, 7. Kalamazoo 80, 8. Olivet 71.

Women's All-Sports: T1. Calvin 68, T1. Hope 68, T3. Trine 45, T3. Albion 45, 5. Alma 44.5, 6. Saint Mary's 42, 7. Adrian 36.5, 8. Kalamazoo 35, 9. Olivet 31.

Men's All-Sports: 1. Calvin 67, 2. Hope 62, T3. Albion 52, T3. Trine 52, 5. Adrian 49, 6. Kalamazoo 45, 7. Alma 44, 8. Olivet 40.

For those interested, Title IX is not a "women should get better treatment" only law. It actually can work both ways. Being a graduate of a school that was once women only, I have seen how it works in the other direction as well.

LaDuke's running mate was the more heralded Calvin Hackert (headed to Hope) but Sam did average 10.5 ppg for Ludington. The only games I saw the future Knight play were the state semi-final and final games when he shot poorly from the floor, going a combined 2-14, though he did hit 9-10 from the charity stripe. He's a bit of a ball hawk being credited for 118 steals as a senior, placing him 11th all time for Michigan prepsters in a single season. LaDuke played free safety and wide receiver on the football team, and has posted a 40 time nearly as fast as cornerback Teez Tabor, the Lions second round pick from Florida.

Thank you SAC! Updated my original post. St. John Fisher is correct, I checked with Marietta's website.

According to the BB schedule on Calvin's website, next season's GR Hall of Fame games are at Aquinas, not Van Noord Arena.

We've had this problem before.

It is Calvin's turn to host in the four year cycle of hosting.   I shrug my shoulders.

I can't remember the reason now but the schedule got flipped the 2013-14 season when it was Aquinas' turn to host. Going from dim memory, the change was requested by Aquinas for some conflict they had at their school (possibly construction?) and Calvin hosted that year with Aquinas taking Calvin's hosting spot the following season. With Aquinas taking back hosting duties for 2017-18, the schools are back in their previous rotation and Calvin should be host in 2018-19. If they're not, this post will be deleted next year as the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of my actions.
