MIAA is 13-28

Score of interest witnessed by yours truly:

Great Lakes Christian 95  Martin Luther 77.........so, uh, yeah.  Pretty sure that's GLC's first ever win against a D3 or NAIA level opponent but I'd have to look into that.  GLC had one win previously against a community college, but have been competitive in most games.

The boxscore is hilariously inaccurate http://d3hoops.com/seasons/men/2017-18/boxscores/20171202_6x1y.xml?view=boxscore

That is a hoot, Sac . . . looks like the shooting you saw today was much better than the rebounding . . . though I guess with shooting like that, there wouldn't be many rebounds.

What's inaccurate? Between the missed shots from the field and the free throw line there were 13 available rebounds to get. ML got 4 boards and GLC 9. Looks about right to me. ::)

Here's a link to the Martin Luther at Great Lakes Christian women's game -- http://www.d3hoops.com/seasons/women/2017-18/boxscores/20171202_tktx.xml?view=boxscore ----- Pretty incredible that Martin Luther missed its only two shots in the first quarter and never missed a shot for the rest of the game ... or just incredible players got stats without playing any minutes ...  ???

HOPEful

For today, Massey has Hope as the #1 SOS in the country (Yes, I know it's meaningless and takes into account games against non-D3 opponents)... but this made me want to dive deeper into both Hope and calvins non-con schedules...

Knight's D3 opponents - @ #13, @#31, #67, @#96, #2, #43, v#71, @#7 (average ranking of 41.25)
Dutchmen D3 opponents - @35, v#111, @#34, @#40, v#140, v#23, #67, #10 (average ranking of 53.75)

I removed Martin Luther as an outlier. They are #427 out of 428, ahead of only Rivier.

Let's go Dutchmen!

Calvin frosh, Luke Morrison named MIAA Player of the Week. Calvin fans have good reason to expect the young man to add several more of these over the next four years. I think he's likely to be a sensational player. He just knows how to play basketball.

. . . with 70 of the 88 points from the three starting guards plus Riley Lewis (this is a pretty exciting guard-oriented offense, it seems). And how great to see Dante Hawkins and Teddy Ray back to last season's form.

But those new uniforms: we're now to root for the "orange and gray"?

They'd look better if they had some blue trim somewhere.    Better being relative.

My takes from the otherwise lackluster game last night...

1. The guard combination of Jason and Dante is going to be very fun to watch this season.

2. Those uniforms are awful. The are an olive(ish), brown(ish), gray. With no blue to be seen... Why!?

What a bunch of old fuddy-duddies.  Gray is the new thing guys - and I actually like those uniforms a lot!  White home uniforms have been the norm for schools for years, yet white is not one of the school colors either.  And they are actually a very neutral gray (might seem olive/brownish to you because most grays in our world are quite blueish - yes I'm a color scientist).

Dante's defensive pressure (despite fouling out) was impressive last night.  7 steals (tied for 3rd all time according to my records - David Krombeen had games of 10 and 9 steals in his career).  Also like seeing Teddy on the boards and defense (3 blocks) to go with his shooting and scoring.  I think he is a matchup problem for most teams.

In one of those rare occasions, I agree with a Hope fan about the ugly gray that has been so noticeable in football and now basketball uniforms.  It is as if someone had a big time sale on ugly gray, and it's showing up all over the place.  I can't believe so many schools would be attracted to such an unattractive color!  If I were forced to choose a gray uniform, I would certainly prefer a blue gray.  But brighter colors have  much more appeal.

sac

Maybe it was my phone but the orange on Hope's uni's came across as almost red.  But that just might be an eye and brain trick since very few times in human history have orange and gray been paired together willfully.......for any reason.

Yes.

But I'm also in the camp that believes schools should wear their correct colors (black also isn't your school color Calvin) and traditional uniform styles.  You may now kindly remove yourself from my well groomed pasture land.
