Also, kudos to KS for transforming Abraham Zapruder's last name into a verb. 8-)

I've evolved. A good Calvinist might say "Ever reformed, and ever reforming." Semper Reformanda for those inclined to the Latin. I've always taken a shine to Jodocus van Lodenstein.

Trine news FWIW:

Trine roster keeps getting thinner and thinner as the year goes on as starting freshman PG Jalen Paul is no longer listed on the roster at trinethunder.com.  I didn't really think much of it when I noticed he wasn't dressed for the Albion game last night.  Guess I was assuming he was out injured or with the flu bug that has been going around.  We are down to 10 varsity players not including 2 JV guys who dress too.  His departure won't be noticed as much with the emergence of guard Marcus Winters who joined the squad in late December after a stellar Junior year on the football team; MIAA defensive player of the year and 2nd team D3 All American at CB.  Marcus has continued to get more playing time and had a really outstanding game last night with 17pts, 7reb, and 4asst.  Just wonder what is causing guys to leave the program midyear.  It's usually after the season when guys think about transferring.

these varsity guys have all left the Trine program in the last 12 months

Jordan Kreglow
Kyle Dodson -- academic transfer, the good kind
Ellis Cummings
Kamron Herrington
Akil McClain
Darek Ditto
Austin Pennick
Tristan Upchurch
Joe Smith
Jalen Paul

...and Hayden Crowder.

Ironic that most all were Guards other than Ellis and Kyle.  Coach Miller is tough to play for...you earn your playing time in practice...your effort...energy...being a good teammate...etc.  You could be starting one game and then go to not seeing the court or just get a few minutes the next game.  I'm not saying that diminished playing time over the last few games was an issue with Jalen or anyone else as I am not privy to any inside information, nor do I need to know.

The past two games we've seen Calvin's rather inexperienced, up-and-down team alternate between what they might become (an impressive demolition of Trine last Saturday), and what they sometimes are (the meltdown against Kalamazoo on Wednesday). The Knights are currently neither as good as the former game displayed, nor as bad as the latter one did, but which extreme are the Knights likely to be closer to when playing against a good Olivet quintet this afternoon?

If it wasn't obvious before, the decision to keep Derrick DeVries on the bench most of the second half against Hope was a huge mistake. He's just too valuable to Calvin's offense to let him sit that long, even if he isn't a great defender. Since the insertion of the former Covenant Christian Charger into the starting lineup nine games ago, the sophomore has been in double figures every contest, and has averaged more than 18 ppg over that stretch. Also, even during the Kalamazoo loss, I think I detected the beginning of a team desire to put the ball in Derrick's hands down the stretch in a close game. Knowing who you want to go to in those situations is always important.

That's what a person gets when he takes goodknight's word on a topic.

Pretty quiet in here... Calvin needs to learn how to shoot.

TUAngola

Pete Smith with a school record 11 triples, scoring 33 pts as Trine defeats Kalamazoo on the road 74-57.  Pete hit his first 8 from behind the line and finished shooting 11-13 from 3.  Myles Copeland added 19.

3 game homestand coming up against Alma, Hope and Olivet.  Other than the game at Calvin the team has played well so far in conference play.  Night and day from how they looked in November and December.

A miserable shooting performance by Calvin, particularly in the first half (8-31), doomed any chance for a win at VNA over a hardworking Olivet Albion team this afternoon (hey, at least I went to the correct gymnasium, so give me credit for that). Calvin's website article mentions the Knights lost a closely contested contest with the Britons. I would beg to differ. Despite the final score of 69-61, Calvin was outplayed the majority of the game, as Albion's superior quickness on the perimeter forced Calvin to start their offense just a few feet further away from the basket than is comfortable, or managed to create turnovers when dribble penetration mysteriously went directly into the teeth of double teams. Once Albion went on a 14 point run to establish a double digit lead mid-way through the opening half, most of the game was played with Calvin down at least 10, and once as much as 17. I do give Knights players credit for somehow managing to get the deficit down to six in the final five minutes--and had the ball with a chance at getting closer--but Albion played a much better game overall than did their hosts. When you're struggling to put the ball in the basket you better at least rebound well, and Calvin didn't do that either, getting out-boarded 43-38. Other game notes:

--It's tough to say anyone played well for Calvin, but Bykerk finished with 11 in what had to be a bruising game for him. Morrison may not have been great but he did grab 10 boards in only 19 minutes, and I thought he deserved more PT than that, especially the second half when he only got 7 minutes.

--Collins and Ebbeling led Albion in scoring 17 and 10, while Wheeler and Davis were excellent in the defensive backcourt, forcing numerous turnovers and difficult possessions from Calvin. Their tenacity was the main reason the Knights found it difficult to get many good looks.

--With Calvin down double digits early in the second half, Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez chose to be a spectator when an Albion shot from the perimeter went up, giving the Brits a second chance upon which they delivered. The subsequent Calvin timeout included a brief, yet well-deserved moment with his coach and Carlos never played again.

--Is it just me, or have others noticed that Michael Wilks has not been the same player since his concussion in early December? It's always tough to see that happen to any player his senior season.
