"touch fouls"

There is a really important example of one. At the 6:10 mark of the second half Adrian had pulled to within 7 (76-69) and had a lot of momentum. Hope gets the ball, and at the 5:57 mark Rainey steps in front of a pass intended for Gamm, who pulls Rainey to the floor. Rainey gets called for the foul, his fifth, thus ending Adrian's chances. I really can't believe they called a foul on Rainey there, who made very minimal contact with Gamm and clearly had a path to the ball. If the uniforms had been reversed Hope fans would be going ballistic about that play.

This?  He raked Gamm's arm coming from behind

I think it's a ticky-tack call that could have easily gone against Gamm. Given where Rainey was and where he intersected the pass, I don't see how you call that against him. And I'll repeat what I said earlier: I don't think Hope fans would have been pleased with that call were roles reversed.

The Hope announcers, for what it's worth, agree with me.

I've been watching it on still frames and it doesn't look to me like he "rakes" an arm. It looks like he gets all ball, and it should have been called out of bounds on Rainey. I assume you're claiming that Rainey "raked" the right arm of Gamm, but the ref who calls that probably can't see that even if it were the case; and, as I said, I don't see it even trying to look at still frames of that play.

It is indisputably a huge call to make at that moment. Adrian has cut it to 7 and Rainey now fouls out. Gamm makes 2 FTs and the game is over.  I'm happy with the outcome, but man, that's a tough call if you're Adrian.

There was another one earlier that got called on either Harris or Rainey for "holding" Beckman in the lane. I thought that was also a "touch" foul. The defender looked to me like he had both arms in the air, so I don't know how you call a hold.

I'm not sure that helps your cause.   ;)

That's why I added the caveat.

The other foul I was thinking of was against Harris at the 10:45 mark. It's hard to see, but that one looks as if it might be a bit more plausible to me. The ref certainly had a better angle than the camera gives us. But while I was watching the video the first time around I shook my head at it.

There's less contact on this play than Rainey's fifth foul, but Webster shouted loudly.

"Rake" doesn't do justice to the force with which the foul was committed.  The way Gamm went down, I thought Rainey pulled him down with both hands.  Give the young man from Rockford an Oscar for selling the call--had he not gone down quite so dramatically I wouldn't have been surprised at a no-call from Kooiker.  A quick check of the Hope roster notes Gamm at 6'7" and 225...which seems about right on the height but perhaps a bit light on the weight-certainly not a build that you would expect to hit the deck as quickly as oldknight trying to get out of the way of a ball entering the bleachers.   Lest anyone be offended, feel free to liberally insert wink emojis throughout this post...

I probably have seen more Calvin games (than Hope) this year. But I'll reserve the Calvin comments for the moment. They've been hosed plenty, but not so much that would affect Wins & Losses in my opinion. They have bigger problems afoot, which others have referenced.

In almost every Hope game I've seen this year (probably 6 or so) - both Dante and Jason could arguably have been sent to the free throw line tons more times, yet they have not been awarded such.

Dante is probably fouled on almost every drive he takes to the hoop, and his athletic double/triple pumps actually may "hurt" that cause, as the MIAA refs seem to assume "no finish equals no contact equals no call". This unfortunately decreases both his shooting % as well as his TO ratios.

Jason - probably has close to the best mid-range game I've seen in almost 40 years of watching this league. However, he gets hit on the elbow a large majority of his outside jump shots, which are never called. Imagine how many FTs / scoring avg / etc would be increased if the refs actually saw what "really" happens in the true flow of the game.

Hope would probably not have "more wins" on their resume because of those items. But it is a shame when true solid efforts aren't duly acknowledged and rewarded.

Both of them have "more strength" than the usual sub-6-footer - which does not seem to get noticed amongst the trees.

And one-sided ref complaining from rose-colored glasses doesn't help. Now these other complaints are true in their own right (like Webster/Adams/Edmond/Pete Smith probably SHOULD go to the line more too), but they should acknowledge the fact that the current pool of refs really fail "most" top-tier league players involved in the upper half of the league race.

I feel each one of the guys who will be on the eventual MIAA first (& some second) team - probably could have a legit 3-5 ppg added to their final tallies just from "fair treatment and respect from their constantly getting fouled on all their lane drives" .

I guess if we are on the topic of officiating, Jordan Parks had another horrendous game (Hope v Adrian). I'm not sure if he has a hate for Hope, because of his brother, or what. Is he terrible for other teams around the league as well?

I think he has surpassed Arnulfo Perez as my least favorite official.

Speaking of Mr. Parks, it was pointed out to me Wednesday night that the Hope/Alma game tonight will probably not have Jordan Parks as one of the referees.  ;) :D

I think Alma actually asked for him to ref the game :D

Final from Albion: Trine 76 Albion 72

Monster week for Myles Copeland who put the team on his back and willed them to 2 big wins.
His stats for the week: 78 pts on 31-52 from the field and 16-20 from the line; 20 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks.

Trine sits in 4th at 7-5 in the MIAA.  A split this week against Kalamazoo at home and Alma on the road should get them in the tournament.  After watching some ugly games by Trine in November and December they have exceeded my expectations in the league for sure.  Either a testament to steady improvement (yes) or playing in a league that is average at best this year (probably a combination of both).

Olivet looking for their 6th MIAA title of all time and first since 1973 when they host Hope on Wednesday. It's certainly the biggest game for the Comets in my lifetime. Perhaps, ever? I'm not old enough to say, I suppose. Either way, I can't wait to make the trip to Culter for the first time on Wednesday. It's sure to be hostile for the incoming Dutchmen. Any suggestions on where to stop for a bite before the game?

Kalamazoo made Calvin look good today.

Well, Calvin also gave KZoo their only conference win this season so they couldn't have made Calvin look too good.

I'm with you, 2

I was at Cutler tonight, it was the loudest I've ever heard the place and several others have said that too. I think Wednesday could be crazy.

As for food the Lamplighter is right across from Culter and they have an Olivet/MIAA atmosphere with banners from all the MIAA schools up. Down side is the food can be slow, especially when hit before game time. If you're coming from GR, and are taking M50 the city of Charlotte has several decent places like the Eaton Pub (American bar food) and Don Tequilas (Mexican) both on M50.
