Calvin receives the same stipend from Pepsi. Those dollars have been been folded into the student life budget.

Omg Wallace Whitfield is reffing the Trine/Olivet game. I'm nervous already. How does this guy still have a job?

Back in my day it was 50 kids in polo's and designer rugby shirts sneering across the gym arrogantly.  No cheers, chants or props.  Just elitist arrogance.  :) ;) :D

Back in my day (even well before yours sac and WD::) ;)), even when Hope's basketball teams were average (i.e.pre-VanWieren), the Civic Center was almost always full and that included huge attendance by the Hope students in the student sections (both sides of the arena) even on the Wednesday night games.  For many who did not have cars, they/we did not seem to mind the walk from the dorms to the Civic Center.  Games were done before 9:00 PM usually, still enough time to make it back to study!  And...the Hope/Calvin games at both places were, like today, standing room only.

I'm pretty dang grateful for the great Hope men's and women's teams, Durfee and the Dew Crew during my 4 years at Hope.

Even if HopeConvert gave me my lowest grade of college......  ;-)

I might be interpreting what happened incorrectly but the funniest part of the night for me was late in the 2nd half Wallace Whitfield stopped the game  to make sure the 29 seconds on the shot clock was correct.  After a brief discussion Whitfield and Bart Wagenke determined the shot clock was correct, all this time Ernst was yelling across the gym directly at Wallace.  Just as the ball is about to be put in play Wagenke stops the game again and then resets the  shot clock.

FWIW I did not think Whitfield was bad tonight.  I haven't seen is name in box scores a lot this year I was surprised to see him assigned to this game.

He came up lame in one of Hope's home games, and they had to finish up the game with 2 refs.

Hope 81  Adrian 65

Bonkers final score if you tuned in with Hope down 20-6.  Rough start for Hope combined with strong start for Adrian and wow what a deep hole Hope had to climb out of early on.    Not even 4 minutes later Hope was ahead 23-21 and extended that to 30-21, a 24-1 run.  From there Hope kept building the lead and reached as high as 15 before Adrian rallied a little to cut into it down to 5.  But Hope took back control and eventually Adrian just fell apart with some loose turnovers, poor misses and Hope runouts and the margin went over 20.

Adrian's lack of bench really seemed to hit them late, they just ran out of legs and I might theorize Tre'Shaun Heard might have been injured, he just didn't seem to have legs tonight.

On Hope's side, Jason Beckman had a really good game but this one might have been won down low with Preston Granger  playing some very good defense on Justin Webster and Teddy Ray gobbling up 14 rebounds.  Hope had some nice minutes from Dreyer, Gamm and Goral, including a big 3 from Goral as Adrian had climbed within a possession or two.

Hope:  Beckman 26,  Hawkings 15, Granger 14
Adrian:  Harris 15, Colbert 15, Webster 13

Olivet 78  Trine 71

Olivet had its own double-digit fight back tonight.  Jalen Adams dominated the first half and frankly kept the Comets from being down by even more.  Strangest thing for me was seeing Tracy Edmond pulled from the game twice, he was unusually poor in his decision making and at least a couple times culpable for defensive breakdowns.  But late first half I thought Olivet was pulling it together and getting a handle on things, a late push brought the margin back down to 4.

Second half was about 12 or 15 minutes of some terrific high energy, high execution basketball by both teams.  But Olivet just seemed to be squeezing the game away from Trine, the turnovers were piling up shots started coming up short and eventually Olivet finally salted it away.  Edmonds was nearly shut out of the first half going 1-10 but he picked it up in the 2nd half and poured in 16 of his 20 of his points.  Trine just couldn't keep Jalen Adams off the boards, he finished with 18.

Trine's woes look much like Adrian's woes and can be found in the minutes section of the boxscore.  Olivet used more bench guys, more minutes and eventually it was enough to wear them down.

Olivet:   Adams 30, Edmond 20, Mason 12
Trine:  Copeland 28, Hunter 16, Smith 14

Jalen Adams broke Olivet's single season scoring record tonight.  His 18 rebounds (9offensive) tied the MIAA Tournament record for rebounds.  A few weeks ago at Trine I thought the Thunder did as good of a job as anyone keeping Adams off the glass that night, tonight Adams dominated them.

Eye opening rebound with Hunter and Coleman stretched for a high rebound Adams slipped in between, rose and grabbed the ball two hands well above the rim.  Pretty amazing athlete.

Unfortunately, I was not in Cutler tonight. I had a scheduling commitment I couldn't avoid and I had to get some random live stat updates when the Internet felt like working. For those of you who missed it Jalen Adams had a double-double in the first half with 22 and 11. That's a pretty impressive half, though the league MVP should put up the occasional impressive half.

What are thoughts on the ticket situation tonight? Am I going to have to show up at 5:30 to get a ticket?

Jameswys

I'm honestly not sure. I'm rolling the dice and showing up around 6:30

He didn't turn the game into a clown show so he has a lot to be proud of :)

Hope needed a lot of help to win this one. And boy did they get it. Wow. Credit to Hope for making a lot of shots but...

Not sure I get your gripe.  Hope whistled for more fouls, has a large rebounding margin, and shoots about 20% better for the game.  What help did they need and get?
