Hopefully this kid is done playing D3 basketball.

I picked him in the 1 and Done League for Satuday. Obviously, I dropped him seeing as he won't be on the court.

Last I heard, he has been not only been removed from the team, but from Fitchburg entirely.

Young Knight 14

Does anyone have any color on expectations for Calvin this weekend?

I'd say there's about a 10% chance that they win both games, 45% chance that they lose both games, and a 45% chance that they win one. They're probably favored in neither game, even on their home court.

Actually, that prediction strikes me as rather optimistic, considering the high national ratings for both opponents. There is likely a better than 55% chance of losing both.  I would think that 45% chance of winning one would be quite an optimistic view even though I have been impressed with the start by the Knights so far.  We are talking about some pretty tough competition and there are still some rough edges to work out.  By the end of the season, this should be a better team than the teams of the last several years.

Final from North Park...

Hope..........139
Greenville...129

The Hope College record book has been rewritten today. Some of the new records set by Hope (and their opponent)...

  • 139 Points by Hope sets a new team record. The previous record was 130 against Berea, Ky on 1-3-97
  • 129 points by Greenville sets a new record for points by an opponent. The previous record was 126 points by Beloit on 12-30-54
  • 268 combined points sets a new Hope College record. The previous record was 249 by Hope and Central, IA on 12-21-90

A few other stats of note...

  • Hope shot over 69% for the game.
  • Hope shot over 58% from beyond the arc.
  • Hope shot nearly 90% from the Free Throw line.
  • Hope also out rebounded Greenville by 11.
  • On the down side, Hope did turn the ball over 30 times, due in large part to the full-court press that Greenville ran the entire game.

He should be done enjoying the freedom that law abiding citizens enjoy.  That is literally an assault.

I personally feel he should get a second chance after sitting out a year and seeking anger management counseling. It should also be up to Fitchburg if they want that second chance to be at their school.

I looked up Greenville's record so far this year.  They have  played 3 games, lost all three, gave up 147 points in one game, and 110 in the other.  Since the other opponents were Loras and Dubuque, which are unknow around here, I'm wondering what level they play and if Hope scoring that many points means anything.

Heading into the game their opponents we averaging 61.9% from the floor and 33.3% beyond the arc. Their opponents were also turning the ball over 34 times a game. I know it's a small sampling size but it still looks like Hope fared a bit better than average against them.

Greenville plays "the system " so you have to forget normal game expectations. They are picked to win the SLIAC - a conference that has yet to win its first NCAA tournament game.

I think I remember reading that in the previous two losses, Greenville caused 35+ turnovers per game. Hope had 16 at the half so 30 is actually pretty decent. Overall Hope played pretty well considering they were without Teddy Ray (he is ill), Ryan Gamm (injury - should be back next week), and Danny Beckman (supposed to be clearer after Thanksgiving following his ACL surgery late last season.

Riley Lewis started the game hot making his first 4 triples. He and Jason Beckman each finished with 30.  Jason also had 12 assists and 8 rebounds to just miss a triple-double. Good contribution from everyone - 6 guys in double figures. Thought the effort was really good from freshman Nate Davis and Jason Dietz. Their stats were good, but against "the system" stats don't mean as much. I was just impressed with their poise and effort in their first collegiate game.

Looking forward to tomorrow and actually seeing our team run a set play. Go Hope!!

Olivet plays both of these teams this weekend, so there might be a bit more knowledge of them in this area on Sunday.

So true about 'the system'.  IWU's two highest scoring games ever were against Greenville in 2015 (150-117) and Grinnell (postseason round one, 2001 (132-91).  The System may win for Greenville for now against the SLIAC, but it no longer does much for Grinnell in the American Rivers (formerly IIAC) - they've long since learned how to combat it.  And solid teams, like Hope, can overcome it even on first exposure, though it may work for half or three quarters of the game.

My guess is that players tend to love it for what it does for their stats, but (most) coaches despise 'the system', since it is so unlike preparation for any other game.  IWU (like most schools) probably never intentionally schedules 'system' teams.  Greenville was already scheduled before they made the switch, and Grinnell was a tourney game, so no choice in the matter.

Final from GR:  IWU 68, Calvin 62.  The Titans led big early, but the Knights cut it to 1 several times late, but could never take the lead.  The Titans closed it out by hitting their FTs.

Olivet wins a tight one. They were up by 15 in the first and the second was mostly back and forth. Around a minute to go Tracy Edmonds hit a 'Steph Curry 3' and Olivet forces 2 turnovers with fast break points to win by 7. It was an exciting finish as we watched it on TV, courtesy of the Loras livestream.

Kalamazoo 102 // Manchester 79

Scoreboard may not show it, but defense won this one for Kzoo. Held Manchester to 38% shooting overall and held a good player in Adrian Johnson to 4-19 from the field. I was impressed by the defensive rotations and rim protection considering it's a young team with no seniors on the roster. Got a bit sloppy towards the end offensively when the subs came in, but it was a comfortable 20-25 point lead for most of the second half. Saturday is their first real test against what's usually a good Anderson team.

Greenville was a tournament team last year paired in the same pod with Hope, Augsburg and Augustana.  As someone mentioned they play a variation of the system (not quite what Grinnell does but last year they actually played faster than Grinnell possessions per game wise)  They played Augustana on that Friday and their game that night looked very similar to the one yesterday at North Park. Strong first half, then kind of fade as the opponent sort of figures things out.   Greenville graduated 4 from last year I think so not quite the same guys, but like any program they've added some new guys too.  I think they look about the same and I kind of expect to see them representing the SLIAC again in the tournament.  Its just kind of a crazy way to play basketball, but it can be picked a part.

IMO, thats just a super tough opponent to open with when you have a lot of bench questions, which Hope does.  Then subtract a couple of your top 7 or 8 and you're kinda reaching for minutes against a team like Greenville.  Basically you practice all of your offensive and defensive sets for 4 weeks, then throw just about everything out for this game.
