I'm not sure what SI would know about high school basketball in Michigan, particularly because Michigan teams can't play in the major multi-state in-season tournaments with the adherent media coverage.

Coaching women is hugely different than coaching men....I think that the head coach of Hope College will continue for a long time.  Seeing this team back in Ohio, I recognizedd two of the assistants.  Maybe one of them will want the job if it opens.

Yeah, those two have been at GVWs side for a long time, but neither is qualified to be employed as a professor at Hope.  Thus, Davelaar and Neal won't be the next coach.  I understand coaching women is much different than coaching men, but the success Morehouse has had with the women grants consideration.

P.S. GVW will quit sooner than you think.  A trip to Salem this year may have been his farewell.

Don't tease us with unfounded rumours--how do you substantiate this?

Sac:  The Der Dutchman you went to is a fine Amish resturant.  To whomever said they were a chain DUH.   They are Amish not stupid!!  I also wondered to myself (like you have) how a 6'9" person can play 30 minutes, and not get one rebound.  Gosh, even a blind pig gets an acorn every now and then.
NB:  I agree that isrishvoice isn't much of an alum, and glad to hear he went to Hope.  He obviously wasn't in the Knollcrest Fieldhouse in March of 00 when a lowly MIAA team destroyed a highly ranked team from that state down south.

SgoHope:  The incidents which you detail are really sad.  I don't doubt they happened, it just doesn't speak well for any school at any level.  In the heat of battle sometimes students will do stupid things.  Generally most MIAA events are family friendly, and yes, I have seen individuals ejected from sporting events in the MIAA.  I have also heard PA announcers reminding their students to rein in the chants, comments etc., and these generally are complied with quickly.  In the early 90's when the Hope/Calvin rivalry was really hot students at both schools were quilty of bad behavior to the point the Presidents of the two schools issued a notice that further incidents deemed unacceptable would result in the suspension of any further sporting events between the two schools.  At one time the refs. were able to give a T to the fans of either school for behavior they thought unacceptable.  I don't know if this rule is still on the books, but if it is it is hard to understand why refs. would tolerate this type of activity.

Realist I remember those instances and even remember Hope fans bombarding the Calvin floor with small foam basketballs in the late '80s durring a game after a call.

I know the NCAA has gone to great lengths to cleanup this kind of behavior, but I'm not sure what kind of penalties there are and if they are even enforceable.

What dissappoints me more than the obnoixous students at the Depauw game is that abosultely nothing was done by the administration to slow or correct these actions.

I have seen the former Calvin AD (Ralph Honderd) move into and through the student section in order to directly address such behviors.  Why do some schools allow this?  I reason that they think that "censoring" such behavior takes away individual freedoms, or that they would lose the battle if they tried.

Hmmm....Let me start by agreeing with sGo Hope, and add that I was sitting next to the adult DePauw section (or one of them, anyway), and they were about as bad.  Loud, obnoxious, just plain scary.  When yelling obscenities at the refs over every step wasn't working, when calling some of our girls "dirty players" didn't work, they started swearing at their own players.  As you all know, that didn't help either!   ;)  It really was disgusting.

As to something being done -- there was a little bit done.  Someone from Hope in a position of authority, after several choruses of "Hope s#cks" and the other disgusting outbursts spoke to the NCAA rep and the AD for DePauw about it.  The choruses of "Hope s#cks" did stop, but not the other stuff, as best as I could tell.  It was an embarassment for DePauw -- why would a school put up with that at an event of this caliber???   ???

It is deplorable to think administrators would let this behavior continue.  I know in the past the MIAA has done alot to make sure all games are enjoyable for the fans, and I would like to think someoene in a position of responsibility would step in.  Perhaps the administration at DePauw is so weak, and afraid of their own students they feared a negative backlash.  Yes, the administration of that school, and the NCAA site representative should be held to some sort of accountability.
It doesn't make sense to put rules or guidelines for behavior on the books, and then turn a blind eye to actual negative behavior.  I wonder if anyone from Hope's administration took any action during the game?

Civic-Minded:  Thanks for the answer to my question before I even had it posted.  I am glad to hear that Hope's representative made an attempt to correct the behavior.  Based on your information I think Hope will make sure it gets well documented, and passed further along.  Don't expect to see De Pauw in any MIAA venues anytime soon.  The type fan display you recount reminds me a little of one Defiance game I attended.  Worst behavior ever in the MIAA.

I'm not so sure that the women's coach is a professor at Hope either.  I still think that the next coach will be an upper ad decision if /when that day occurs.

Shouldn't happen at any event, not just a tournament games.  But it does seem worse when the site has been selected to host the games as an extra privilige.

Morehouse is not a professor at Hope, but he is the director of the Dow Center.
