Derrick DeVries' left knee is bleeding. Nobody has noticed it yet. It's pretty bad, almost 3" wide.
Alex Bo's also has a bloody knee.

A bit of poor sportsmanship on the part of the Calvin students tonight, holding up a sign saying "Hope, keeping ugly girls out of Calvin since 1876".

Poor sportsmanship is poor sportsmanship. Doesn't matter where it comes from.... Unless it's Calvin, then it's apparently okay.

Time to start getting ready for Angola.  Who's all going to be there?

And guys with bad haircuts.

Disgusted by the behavior of the Calvin students chanting "Thank you, Preston!" as he walks off the court in defeat.

Yes, I am a Hope fan. But beyond that I am a proponent of sportsmanship, especially from these two schools. We should be better than to taunt a player as he walks off the court in defeat or to call all the female students at a school for the past 143 years, ugly. I am sure that Calvin fans have plenty of complaints about the Hope students, I know I've been greatly disappointed in their behavior on more than one occasion.

These two schools, these two CHRISTIAN schools, should be showing the world that you can have a fierce rivalry without the negativity, taunting, insults and disrespect that has become so prevalent in the division one student sections.

Sorry for the rant, but I had to get that off my chest.
Now, on to Friday. Good luck, Calvin. I, for one, will be hoping you do well.

Dutchfan, what was the context of 'thank you Preston'? Did he miss the last shot of the game? I didn't watch it as I was in Cutler watching OC.

He did not. Preston has a "big personality" to put it nicely. Because of that, he has drawn the attention of the Calvin student section. There may be other history that I am unaware of. I will say that as a Calvin fan I was disappointed when they started chanting that. However, and not to condone the action, it is nothing Hope students haven't done in the past (eg. "we love Daly"). Also, disappointed to hear about the sign. I am sure that if the AD had seen it he would have immediately told them to take it down.

Big turning point , IMO, was Hope was up by 4 with the ball with 3 minutes left and Thad Shymanski (who had a real nice game overall) had a block causing a turnover in which Calvin then went down the court and hit an And-One basket (I believe Calvin missed the free throw but it helped change the momentum a bit at that point ).    Nice play drawn up by KVS out of the timeout with 36 seconds left to hit the basket with I believe about 10 seconds left  .  Thought Hope would go for the 3 at the end but I get it you want the ball in your best player's hands at the end .

Getting back to basketball.

Great win by the Knights to complete the season sweep! They showed some real toughness in the second half. They fell behind several times in the second half, but just kept coming back. Thad Shamanski had a great game and stepped up when Calvin needed it. Jason Beckman was spectacular. Fortunately, he missed a few down the stretch, which may have had something to do with slightly better defense from the knights. Hope could have a case for a foul on Beckman's last shot. After seeing a few different angles, I did not think it was, but its close. Hope's defense on DeVries was great. Definitely frustrated him the whole game. The decision to use Townes on DeVries was a great adjustment by Mitchell. Excited to hear other's comments on the game.

I am sure that if the AD had seen [the sign] he would have immediately told them to take it down.

The AD likely saw the sexist sign, which was displayed to the scorer's table side of the stadium. (I said to the person next to me that the Hope AD would surely have dealt with that from a Hope student.)

But it shouldn't detract from a terrific, down-to-the-wire Hope v. Calvin classic. Couldn't have asked for a closer or more exciting game.

Impressive performances from both sides . . . Shymanski's play and shooting was surprisingly excellent, and KVS made a smart coaching move in putting a big defender on Jason Beckman the last 5 minutes, making it difficult for him to out-jump his defender. Calvin's size can give any team they'll face a challenge.

And a great effort by all Hope's seniors, including the nearly unstoppable JB. What a treat he has been these past two years.

The game's deciding play? My nominee is Carlos' desperation 3-point, 25-foot bank shot with the shot clock running out . . . the margin of difference, as it turned out.
