Jim Timmer can't afford to hire another Chuck Winkleman.

If you wanted a proven winner, great recruiter, someone to energize your student fan base, build a relationship with season ticket holders and spice up the rivalry; Matt Neil could be your man.

Or more plausibly this guy:

Luring VanderWal away from Marietta would be a major coup for Calvin. He's got a great thing going down there at 'etta.

Jon VanderWal is from Cadillac, played at Albion as most here I'm sure know.  He has shown interest in other MIAA jobs.

Who was the other Tim _____ that was a long-time assistant at Calvin and took a head coach job elsewhere?

Tim Walker was the head coach at Malone, left to enter private business 5 years ago.   He was only at Calvin for 3 years though, left there to coach at Trinity Christian.

Actually heard John Ross for the women's program a few weeks ago.  Sam Hargraves is the obvious Calvin grad in the room, I think there are one or two others at the D2 or high school level that would be interested.  Maybe even AD Jim Timmer.

Hargraves (Alma), Christner (Waynesburg), and Sall (Northern Michigan) are the obvious Calvin grads that stick out to me in the D3/D2 coaching ranks.
Other D3 coaches with (West) Michigan roots or Christian-faith ties could likely apply as well.
I don't know the High School scene at all.

Before the men's job opened, I wondered if Christner would be interested in the women's job.  He started out on the women's side at Calvin.

Matt Nadelhoffer might be a good get.  Of course, I'm hoping Eddie D makes a come back.

Loras 75  Albion 64

From the little I saw of the game the Britons had a hard time defending without fouling and struggled to shoot 3's.  Much better team when the 3-balls drop.

Armstrong 18, Collins 12

Britons have good players in their program, they expect to be very good next season.

John Ross appeared on the men's bball coaching  scene last year as the season started.  While no one commented on it at the time it may be more than it first appeared to be.  I doubt he would go back to the women's program at Calvin when he left it 3 years ago.

I don't fully know his involvement with the MBB team. He's listed as a coach, but during games he stood by the water cooler rather than with the rest of the coaches. I doubt he's what they're looking for in the next MBB coach.

I think you both would be surprised to know ... you are a bit off.

John was more involved with the men's team than you guys are maybe realizing ... and the idea of him returning to the women's sidelines is something that isn't that farfetched from what I have been able to learn.

That last part being thrown up in the air, IMO, because of KVS' decision. But we shall see. I'm not sure any chickens should be counted.

It is amazing what you dig up when you visit Western Michigan in early February. :)

Who is tan, rested, and ready?  Matt or Eddie?

With respect to coaching candidates for Calvin I think it will be hard for Calvin to pull a coach like Vanderwal from Marietta or other coaches that they may try to get from outside the Michigan area.
There are some reasons for this one of which would be can Calvin pay a guy like Vanderwal enough to leave Marietta and what he has done there, a second reason that there could be would be what criteria is Calvin going to put on what credentials the candidates need to have,(masters degree, etc) and a third that comes to mind would be are they going to want the candidates to be affiliated with the CRC or RCA? These are just some questions that have come into my mind. We will find out soon enough the answers as to what Calvin will be looking for. I am not placing emphasis on any one of the three things I listed but to me they will probably factor in somehow. And there is definitely one I feel will be a big factor but I am not going to voice that opinion right now.

Another D3 head coach Calvin might consider is Owen Handy at Anderson, who apprenticed at Wheaton under both Mike Schauer and Bill Harris. He's a western Michigan native and Holland High grad, so he knows all about the MIAA; in fact, former Albion star Travis DePree is his cousin.

Matt and his wife just opened an insurance agency in the west Chicago suburbs.  They have put a lot into getting that going.  I don't think he is a candidate.
