Closing the Sam Hargraves file at Alma

To get a sense of the job Sam Hargraves really did at Alma you have to look at the previous 12 years where the Scots finished dead last in 9 of those 12 MIAA seasons.   Going back a bit further the Scots hadn't had a winning overall record since 1997 or a winning MIAA record since 1979.  They had been rooted in the bottom 3 spots in the league going back to 1989 save for 1 season.

The first 5 years of Hargraves tenure there was steady improvement, followed by a steady and a little surprising decline but should be noted Alma played a pretty brutal non-conference schedule each of the last 4 years.

11-12      5-9     9-16     6th
12-13      4-10   9-16     6th
13-14      6-18   7-18     5th
14-15      9-5    11-15    4th
15-16      12-2  24-7      2nd   MIAA Tournament Champions, NCAA Quarter-finalist
16-17      8-6    12-14    4th
17-18      5-9      8-17    7th
18-19      4-10    5-21    t6th
----------------------------------------

53-59   .473  MIAA record
85-124 .427  overall

I remember back in 2016 when Alma came to Hope and the place was as full as a Calvin game. It was the most excited I have been for a Hope game in a long time and the atmosphere was electric. I thought at the time Alma was going to be a major player in the MIAA for the next few years but it never came to fruition.

Tuangola- I believe the smiley face at the end if that post was an indication of it being a joke. I certainly wouldn't see Brooks going anywhere

It might get interesting if the Hillsdale job comes open in the next few years though. ;)

It was a joke.

Is calvin prepared to pay him more than NMU? I would find that to be an interesting decision in the wake of dissolving the very popular Student Activities Office, due to decreased enrollment.

Or is Coach Sall willing to take a pay cut to return to Grand Rapids?

What's the value of putting a kid through Calvin with staff discount? At least $100,000 over four years?

I'm not sure Northern Michigan actually pays that much more for their head basketball coach.  Its probably on par or close, but cost of living is less in Marquette.

NMU reports an avg salary of 92,000 for its head coaches but that includes a D1 hockey coach and their football coach who both make over 100 grand.  Calvin's reported average is 66,000 but I'm not sure what sports that includes.  (interesting Alma is the MIAA high at ........100,000 )

It might be a tougher basketball decision for Sall than you might think, his program has some momentum now and recorded a 17-12 record after mild progress the first 5 years.   They finished 3rd in the GLIAC North, their best standing in years.  He loses only 2 significant Sr's off this years squad.

I'd lean 80/20 he'd take the Calvin job if offered though.

At least. From my very limited understanding of the numbers, a very high portion of tuition and board is covered. On top of that, the student is still eligible for other scholarships and grants from Calvin and elsewhere. In all likelihood, the entire cost of attendance or very nearly all of it ends up being covered. That's well over a $100,000 value.

He does have the NMU program on the upswing but he would have to replace an assistant who just left for a head coaching job.

Yes, I'd say closer to $135,000 per child.
