This article  (https://calvin.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/releases/20200115b9zjl3)   says:
QuoteGrand Rapids, MI – The Calvin University men's basketball plays in a home rivalry matchup against Hope College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

I'm assuming that's a mix-up and the game is at 8pm correct?

Everything else I have seen says 8pm - including the TV schedule

FWIW, the linked article above has been fixed on the Calvin site. 8 p.m. is indeed correct.

What happened to Carson Muelenberg? Is he sitting out a year? Injured? Transferring?

Calvin wins over Hope 75-62.

Thad Shymanski with 25 points, almost all of them coming in the 2nd half.  One of the better 2nd-half shooting performance I've seen in this rivalry game in recent years, right up there next to Jordan Brink's final Calvin-Hope game.

Rough shooting night for Hope , especially as a lot of their misses came from inside or around the paint.

Hope 3-8 from the 3 point line. Calvin 12-29.  Quite the difference in attempt numbers.

Pretty amazing Hope's first three point attempt didn't come until about 25 minutes into the game. Starting 2020 like it's 1920!

A few more Hope-Calvin observation...

1. While Hope missed a lot at the rim a close look at stats shows they also only had 3-4 assists. Why? Inside-out wasn't there. When it went to Granger on the block - my opinion - he was so hell bent on shutting up the raucous Calvin students who rode him like a rented mule that once it went in it was going up. Don't care who you are or your toughness, he was getting a loud and constant earful and I think it got him out of the game.

2. Jake Honer's perimeter D was missed. Feel like he could have quelled the Shymanski outburst by sticking tighter to him.

3. Gamm should have probably played more. While he needs to be more of a threat on O, he's the best defender Hope has. He played roughly 15 min coming off injury and in that time held DeVries scoreless.

4. Sometimes shooters get hot. That was the case last night. Teams are really pretty evenly matched although Hope has to find some consistent threats behind the arc. Should be a battle again at DeVos. Hoping the Dew Crew Can bring it like the Calvin students last night.

Side note, one ref was looking at the monitor when his crew mate went down hurt, anyone who watched at home know why? Speculation was maybe a student interfered, but really no idea.

The injured ref was the one who made the foul call.  The crew mate (Kevin Kooiker) was looking at the monitor to verify who was fouled and who committed the foul.

Both teams had to be kicking themselves at halftime for not being up double digits. They way each team was shooting (sub-30%), the other could have had a large lead by simply making a modest number of their own shots.

Calvin's second half barrage came when Hope continued to double down on DeVries who would kick it out to the open guy. Thankfully the Knights started to knock 'em down. DeVries ended the game with 10 assists, of which 7 were assisted three pointers (6 of these 7 were in the 2nd half).

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks. Heard he probably tore an Achilles.

@KnightSlappy (good to meet you!)
I'm not sure Hope had the offensive firepower to be up double digits at half. All our shots were heavily contested.

DeVries was amazing. All credit to Shymanski, he was great, but DeVries either scored or created very high-quality opportunities for his teammates. I bet Thomas/Hackert/George could've scored at least 15 if given the same high-quality looks.

@HoopsCoach
I can't know Preston's mental state, but I have to imagine knowing you're by far Hope's best offensive weapon places a lot of responsibility to score early and often.

Helping off guys to try and bother him was fine until shots started falling. Would guess since Gamm and and also probably Opple did the best work on him straight up (Thomas was decent but big diff between an 18 yo Frosh and a 22-23 yo senior) we may see a tweaked approach in Feb. particularly if Hope can't find its own consistency on O.

Oh for sure. Lot of pressure there with Lewis leaving. Just a fan observation, he took A LOT of heat and that can make you press a little harder. So let's say a combo of the pressure AND that innate desire to shut people up! Preston will be fine. A little film study to show opportunities to kick out and some work and he likely doesn't get stuck in that rut again.

It would be awesome for Granger to develop that ability.

I saw a pretty stark difference between him and DeVries (in that respect) all game. DeVries began every drive knowing where the double was coming from and where he was going with the ball. Granger would look to pass only after he was doubled or stopped.

Excellent observation, Scottie. Hope needs Preston to keep developing in those b-ball IQ ways (and he surely has the work ethic and desire to do so) because the recipe here on out will be to do what Calvin did. Losing a weapon like Lewis means adjustments to get other pieces and parts involved is needed ASAP.

The forum won't let me upload an attachment for some reason.
