Fans think of close games being decided in the final seconds . . . when, of course, all 40 minutes--2400 seconds--decide the outcome. Yesterday, that included Hope's multiple first half lay-up misses and its 12 missed free throws, which mostly occurred before the game's final minutes.

Yesterday's free throw issues were on par for a team that's only shooting 66.5% of free throws for the season (down from 76% last season, with Jason Beckman and Riley Lewis having lifted last year with their 90+%).

Regarding Wiz and Sac . . . keep the comments and debate coming. You both contribute to making this one of the best D3 discussion boards.

Curious strategy by Mitchell at the end of today's game with Alma.  Let the Scots run the clock down before they scored with a nice jumper by Kleiver from the elbow.  Granger's 40 points difficult to celebrate when coach let's the victory slip away.

I'm in line with sac and don't mind the strategy to play defense and hope for a stop.

And I have a harder time celebrating Grainger's 40 point game due to the 6 missed free throws, two turnovers, 5 measly rebounds, and 8 or so missed layups.

Grainger is a very good player. But the ISO one-on-one back down the opponent while everyone else stands still and watches ISN'T WORKING. He's not even looking to kick it out, though his teammates aren't help much by getting open on the perimeter if he were.

Its not exactly the same situation, but I attended a game this year in which an intentionally missed FT would've been a sound plan for an endgame situation.  I asked about it after the game and he said, "We could've done that, but I don't want to tell my guys I don't trust them to get a stop at this point in the season."  It was a perspective I hadn't considered, but it makes sense.  Telling a team to foul down three is, at least subtly, telling your players you don't trust them to come through on defense.  I imagine some coaches would rather lose to a freak three than send that message.

Short video highlight of Albion/Trine from Albion.  Davis's transition 3 I mentioned in a earlier post is about halfway through.

Couple of shockers tonight ( at least the margins are surprising)

Adrian over Calvin 76-59 - and it really wasn't that close most of the game

Hope over Tribe 86-67 - Granger with 24 (19 in the 2nd) and exits the game at 1000 for his career. All around good game from Hope.  16 offensive rebounds lead to 23 second chance points.

Time for a marathon!

Thursday, Hoopsville will be on the air for at least nine hours in the 7th Annual Hoopsville Marathon Show.

This year's show will feature coaches, administrators, and many others around Division III to give us a sense of the season to date and what is to come. There is only a month or so left in the regular season, so there is plenty to talk about.

For more information about the show and its impact, click here.

The show's guest list is below with a rough idea of when they were scheduled to appear during the live show.

The marathon is also a chance to fundraise of the show. Many fans of Hoopsville ask often how they can give to the program so we can continue doing our work into the future. In the first few years of the Marathon, the fundraising side was an important aspect. However in the last few years, we have shyed away from fundraising as we tried to find other means to financially run the program. After requests from many, we are do have a few ways fans can contribute.

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch the entire Marathon show LIVE in the video player above. We will effort to turn around podcast episodes of the entire show. They will be available to the right (after the show is off the air).

Guests appear on the Hoopsville Hotline presented by BlueFrame Technology.

And don't forget to interact with the Dave and guests. You can use the social media option to the right and even email (dave.mchugh@d3sports.com) questions to the show.

When it comes to the game of basketball, we love celebrating not only the student-athletes in Division III, but also those who help carry the game forward sometimes outside of the spotlight.

Sunday on Hoopsville, we celebrate those who have made the game of basketball, especially at DIII, so great. Coaches who continue to excel in different parts of the country and programs who play for more than just themselves.

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch Thursday's Marathon Show in the following ways:
- Main page: www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville
- Show page: http://bit.ly/2GBqAuZ (or www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2019-20/marathon)

If you have questions about Division III basketball, feel free to send them and we will answer them on a the show. Email them to dave.mchugh@d3sports.com or use any of the social media options.

Hope 86 Trine 67 F

Surprising margin for sure.  Hope's interior interplay was outstanding all night, really kept Trine chasing.  Couple key stats that pop off the box, rebounding Hope with 16 offensive, margin tightened latter but Hope really dominated the boards when the game mattered.  Trine with some uncharacteristic turnovers, 14 on the night or about 20% of their possessions.  Exceptionally high for them.

Nice to see Hope play through foul trouble on Granger.  Dykhouse and Wilkins pretty key in that late first half stretch that resulted in Hope opening a 10 point lead.  Trine couldn't gather much more than a little push into single digtis once or twice after that, still a 10 point game with 11 to play then Hope went on a 10-0 run over about 6 trips that included a Granger 3 and Granger 3 point play.  All but over after that run.

Hope:  Granger 24, Thomas 13, George 11
Trine:  Hunter 14, Johnson 13, Cox 9

I (and my wife) attended the game this evening also and agree with your assessment, especially, Hope's inside game was really stepped up from what it has been of recent (particularly the Calvin game the other week.)  Hope's outside shooting was "on" tonight, while Trine's was "off."  She kept saying to me on the way home..."I thought you said that the game was going to be closer because of how Trine has been playing." ::) :) I just smiled and said..."what they said" after some other Hope fans were overheard saying the same thing as above i.e. that Hope really played well, probably one of their best games this year!  I told her that is just the way it goes sometimes!  Anyway, indeed, great win for Hope and hopefully they can continue the energy for the second half of the season, especially with the upcoming Calvin II.

Albion 78 Olivet 69

+1 for road win/ -1 for home loss

1.  Albion 7-0  +4
2.  Trine 5-2 +1
3.  Calvin 4-3  E
4.  Hope 4-3  -1
5.  Alma 3-4  E
5.  Adrian 3-4  -1
7.  Olivet 1-6  -1
7.  Kalamazoo 1-6  -2

I think its happening for Albion.

2 games is going to be tough for Olivet/Kzoo to makeup but not impossible    Alma, Adrian and Hope all got big wins tonight for their tournament chances.  One of those 3 will probably pull away, one will find itself scrapping for the final spot probably.

Remaining games:

Agreed sac, Hope's win last night made the idea of anyone catching Albion pretty darn unlikely at this point. Adrian's win made the battle for the 3 and 4 spot a lot more exciting!

I want to point out Hope has only 2 home games remaining, against Calvin and Kzoo. With trips to Albion and Trine coming up, losing at Alma, Adrian, and/or Olivet could really put them in a dicey position.

Interesting that the league cancelled all the basketball games last night. Oh well, Saturday's games could be fun.

I think he's living in a selective, alternative reality and choosing to believe that the games last night did not happen.
