That 1973 Unity Christian team was unbelievably talented throughout the starting lineup, but they were totally outcoached that day by Mr. Promise Keeper.

Couldn't have written that better myself. :( :'(

How could you possibly keep "Butts" Kool off the team--even if it was just for the sake of his nickname. :D

Oldknight:  Nice catch:  I transposed the Phelps, and Veenstra high point games somehow.  Yes, Mark had the 56.  You get a + karma.

Okay, we'll put Mr. Basketball's great uncle on the All-Nickname team.

Glad to help you avoid the turnover.   ;)

BMK:  Or any other Calvin old timers.  Please name the Calvin player from Chicago who could reverse slam dunk when standing flat footed underneath the basket?  Hint:  Mess with the bull...........
I don't recall Cooper offhand, but he must have been good if you say he was better than Lodewyk at dunking.  Yes, I tend to agree with you on Holstege over Elliott.  Joel didn't have the players around him the last two years that Eric did all 4 years.

Bill DeHorn. Now there is a player who would have been one of Calvin's all time greats if he could have stayed in school with his head on straight for 4 years.

Bingo!!  Thanks oldknight we have a winner.  You are right.  Never will forget the game De Horn outplayed Hope's all time best (Mr. Brady).  Yes, Bill did seem to have more than his share of problems off court.  For those of you trying to imagine Mr. De Horn.  Picture a white, 6'4" Charles Barkley.

So where's my good karma?  ;)  And after I helped you avoid the TO.  :D

Oldknight:  I gave you the karma.  Just tried to double up, and Pat tells me I can't high 5 you for 18 more hours.  Go figure!!

In the game when M. Phelps scored 56 points he was shooting from all over the court.

Yes, Mike Phelps (called him Mickey back then) was hot that day and made a lot of layups on fast breaks.  But it was a heads up play by reserve, Bob Wyma from Chicago, who went to the free throw line in the closing seconds and intentionally missed the shot, got his own rebound, and fed Phelps in the corner for a long jumper (no three point arc at that time), so he could break Duane Rosendahl's long standing record.  Had the three point shot existed, Phelps may have scored 65.

Bob Wyma? You sure it wasn't Jim Kos who missed that FT?

Lets face it......today's players would lose to yesterday's players every time if they called the game like they did in the 60's and 70's.

100% of today's players don't know how to play defense without contact or dribble drive to the basket without palming the basketball.

I think its interesting that the highest scoring team in Hope's school history came from the 1960's.......WAY before the shot clock or 3 point shot.

Best MIAA players I've seen going back to 1990ish in no particular order.

Dan Davis, Calvin
Bill Sall, Calvin
Steve Honderd, Calvin
Chris Knoester, Calvin
Eric Elliot, Hope
Wade Gugino, Hope
Duane Bosma, Hope
Joel Holstege, Hope
Jeremy Cole, Kalamazoo
Dave Muhlenberg, Hope
Jeff Bell, Olivet
Aaron Winkle, Calvin
Jeremy Veenstra, Calvin
Michael Thomas, Albion
Travis DePree, Albion
Brandon Crawford, Albion
Andy Phillips, Hope

I think you could make a pretty good team out of those guys.  I'd start Elliot, Holstege, Winkle, Honderd and Gugino.

Lots of special mention guys like Ron Barczak, Kalamazoo, John Njus, Kalamazoo,  Tim Czarnecki, Albion,  Chad Kahle, Defiance, Steve Brooks, Adrian, Don Overbeek, Hope, Dan Aultman, Calvin.........I could go on.

All this reminising has sparked an idea........wouldn't it be great to get some Hope/Calvin alumns together for an all-star game........you could have an over 30 game, and an under 30 game.

Play the double header at DeVos for charity.......I think you'd get a great crowd.

Final D3Hoops.com poll has Hope at #6, Calvin at #14 and Albion at #23.
Final Massey ratings has Hope at #3, Calvin at #11 and Albion at #20.

Sac, I like your suggestion about a charity game.  Maybe we could get a posters' exhibition going between the doubleheader games.  Kcrest and Oldknight still have a little left ;).
