HOPEful

I'm more stuck on the freshman non-starter winning defensive player of the year over Nick who averaged 3.5 steals per game or Warners who averaged more blocks, steals, and rebounds.

That one baffled me as well - I mean he did bring a lot of defensive energy when he took the floor, but he was not the best defensive player in the league - or as you point out on his own team.

I'm sort of stuck on Cox over Shymanski but Thad really struggled shooting this year.  But I still would have picked Shymanski, get the reasons though.

Tyler George ends up on the 2nd team probably over Thomas (Hope).  Tyler really had a good year but was really excellent Hope's last 5 games without any blips shooting 58% from the field, 50% from 3 and 91% at the stripe averaging 20 pts exactly.  Those numbers carried out over an entire season are MVP/AA type stuff.  He was good.

This was not Thad's best year. I think 2nd team is appropriate.

DPOY is a nice award

......but its hard to take it seriously when one year the defending DPOY wasn't even nominated the next year.......and was better than the year before.

I don't really get how a non-starter can be Defensive Player of the Year. As a coach, if I have a player that is the BEST defensive player in the conference, I'm starting him and getting him more playing time than 15 minutes a game. I'm putting him on the other team's best player. If he's an offensive liability, I'm telling him to play aggressive and that I don't care if he fouls out as long as he shuts his guy down.

And not taking anything away from Mengnanglo. He's is going to have a great career at Trine and I think he'll be special. I just think Bowman and Garland already ARE special.

and hard to take seriously when Tony Canonie didn't win it that one year when he should have.

I agree, the selection of Manny Mengnanglo as DPOY was a shocker.  No doubt he has a lot of skills and for a 6'8 guy has the quickness of a guard.  But he wasn't the best defensive player in the league, let alone on the Trine squad (Bowman and Williams were much better defenders).  He was just too inconsistent, some games he was phenomenal but other times he looked lost, but he played much better as the season wore on.  He's still a "youngster" when it comes to basketball, he didn't grow up playing basketball like everyone else.

I will stand by my pick of Nick Bowman as DPOY.  He has the quickness and agility to stick with most anyone, and there was no one better in the league at anticipating passes and jumping in the passing lanes for easy steals and buckets.

I'm in complete agreement. Nick averaged 3.5 steals a game and did so averaging only 2 fouls per game. And if you take away Kalamazoo, only Kleiver averaged more minutes a game, which in my opinion matters when assessing the defensive player of the year. You can't stop the other team defensively from the bench. Warners had more blocks and steals per game than Manny, and significantly more rebounds. I'm not sure Manny cracks my top 5, let alone DPOY.

Finally got announced, but Trine is headed down to Virginia to play Randolph-Macon Sunday.  We'll get at least one postseason game this year, even if its unofficially postseason.

Even before this season started, East Texas Baptist coach Blake Arbogast was contacting schools across the country that had been in the 2019-20 tournament, trying to drum up interest in an alternative national tourney to be held at ETBU when this season was over. I can't imagine that he didn't contact Hope coach Brian Morehouse, since Hope would've been as much of a no-brainer to be a candidate for such a postseason tourney as any team in the country.

ETBU, due to cancellations, does have a couple contests still available, but I'm not sure they've got any practice days left.  That might be an issue for further play.

I'm guessing that Blake Arbogast abandoned the tournament idea somewhere along the way, Ryan.

I think they were hoping the NCAA would exempt all post conference tournament play from the game limits and abandoned plans when that didn't pan out.
