Take your pick: Mount Union hosting Trine . . .

  • Massey Ratings: MU 70, Trine 60
  • Actual result: MU 72, Trine 62

But TUAngola will have the real game assessment.

I watched the entire game.  Mount played fairly well despite a slew of turnovers forced by TU, but honestly I wasn't blown away by either team.  I was impressed with Bowman.  First time I've seen him play.  He was the best player on the floor which I know isn't uncommon.  Mount's length seemed to bug Trine on the offensive end.  They tend to annoy teams because they're just a bunch of 6'2" - 6'6" kids that are pretty athletic and play hard so they get a lot of hands in the passing lanes, switch and recover quickly, etc.  You could tell Trine is a good team, but maybe just wasn't shooting as well as normal that day (and Mount shot well).

I was out of town so didn't get to watch either of the weekend games.  Going into the Muskingum and Mount Union weekend games I was thinking we'd do well to come out with a split.  In looking at the stats we didn't shoot well either game.  Got pounded on the boards by Mount Union, plus they shot very well from the field.  Brent Cox was 1-10 from the field in the MU game.  He hasn't gotten off to a good start in my opionion this year.  In the 2 home games I have watched I am not liking the rotation he's in with Manny Megnanglo.  Coach Miller swaps them out about every 2 to 3 minutes, and also does 'offensive/defensive' situational substitutions at the end of games.  I'd like to see both on the court at the same time.  Cox has to play more minutes for us to be effective because when he's out our offense is pretty predictable.  Aiden Warzecha hasn't played well either and he, for the time being, has lost his starting PG position to freshman Hayden Jones.  We need Warzecha to break out of the fog he's in.  Like i mentioned in earlier posts a few weeks ago, we aren't a top 25 team.  Opposing teams have a lot more film and scouting reports on us this year.  I still think we'll be right there in the MIAA race but it won't be easy.  Both Calvin and Hope are playing well, Albion is starting to figure out how to play without Ebeling dominating inside the last few years, Olivet added some nice pieces to their squad, and Alma looks to be much improved.

Time to retire Arnulfo Perez.  Embarrassing.

I'm not sure I can say anything about any official in particular but it's bad when the ugliest thing about a 41-point blowout in which one team scores the first 28 points of the game before the other team finally scores nearly 13 minutes in is a combined 56 fouls called. It was an equal opportunity foul fest all night long for no particular reason.

Both benches were warned within the first 4 or 5 minutes of the game.

But what about that game. Anderson came in 4-0, ranked #50 by Massey, and Calvin held them to zero points for the first 13 minutes of the game, finishing out the first half with a 51-13 lead. Anderson beat Calvin the last time they played, two years ago.

This Calvin team is fun to watch. They play with such intensity. They are always running, and pushing, and driving. And on the defensive end they can hold an undefeated team scoreless for 13 minutes.

If you want a good laugh at just how bad a ref can be, do a search of "Arnulfo" on this site.
Let's go Dutchmen!

Bill Sall got his warning less than 2 minutes into the game. He said "you've got to be kidding me" at a too high a decibel level.

The Knights defeated Aquinas 90-72 tonight.

Calvin had hit 9 three-point shots in 12 attempts in the first half, and If i remember correctly, they reached 13 of 16 part way into the second half. Both teams had been playing very hard and seemed to tire out half way through the second half, and Calvin missed their last 11 three-point attempts ending at 13 of 27, for only 48%.

Shymanski, Morrison, Fruin, and Egekeze combined for 79 points, 65% field goal percentage, and 60% from 3-point range.

2.5 minutes into the second half Calvin had 68 points, and it looked like they might finish the night with about 125.

Observations on the Hall of Fame Classic:
1)   Calvin can play. Tough for Hope fans to see former Dutchmen Luke Morrison excelling as a Knight, but congrats to him.
2)   Clayton Dykhouse (21 points, 0 turnovers) had an all-American night, effectively neutralizing CU star Christian Rodriquez (9 points, 7 turnovers).
3)   Hope is winning with its defense, not, so far, with shooting (33% tonight). 41% 3 point shooting helped compensate for 26% 2-point shooting, with only 14 points in the paint on many missed or blocked layups. But props to the energetic defense:  16 steals to CU's 2 steals offset CU's inside size and +16 rebound advantage.
4)   It was a sparse crowd—likely related to the Michigan/Ottawa County Covid explosion.
5)   I've encouraged Covid-anxious fans to come, explaining the masking requirement. But about half the fans thumbed their nose at Hope College's signage and PA announcements requesting masking. One health professional fan who spoke to me was more than a little displeased with the unmasked fans' disrespect of the college and of other fans.

It was Luke Morrison's brother who spent some time at Hope.

Thanks, KnightSlappy, my bad . . . Tom Morrison was at Hope . . . which explains why I didn't recognize Luke (who, though 6' 5", moves like a point guard and shoots well--very impressive).

It looks like it's going to be quite the battle between Calvin, Hope, and Trine this year.

Of these 3, Hope looks the most vulnerable to losses vs the other 5 MIAA teams.   Hope's strong December slate is going to reveal a lot, one way or the other.
